Douglas D. Austin, 63, of Corry, Pa., passed away Friday, March 15, at the Corry Manor.
He was born Oct. 3, 1960, in Bradford, Pa., a son of the late Robert E. and Ermma “Billie” (Swackhammer) Austin.
Doug was raised and educated in Bradford and graduated from Bradford Area High School in 1978. After high school, he attended Mansfield State College and obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Financial Accounting. After college, he came back to Bradford and worked at Bradford Pipe and Supply as a threader and then for the Bradford Era as a newspaper deliverer. Eventually, Doug took over his family business, Austin’s Distributions and ran it for 30 years until he fell ill. At that time he moved into the Corry Manor, where he would be recognized for his warm smile and waving he gave to us all in the community.
When Doug was healthy, he was an avid bowler, softball player, and was a Division 2A wrestler and shot putter for Mansfield State College. He coached Track & Field at Floyd C. Fretz Jr High. He also enjoyed fishing and shooting. He was also an avid Green Bay Packers.
He was a member of Corry First Church and Torpedo Community Church in Spartansburg. He enjoyed having the pastor from Torpedo come to the Manor and would attend his bible study classes. Doug absolutely loved children and played Santa for the kids of the YMCA.
In addition to his parents, Doug was preceded in death by his sister, Bobbi Jo “Bo” Austin.
He is survived by his sister, Brenda Austin and her fiancé Douglas Barber of Cattaraugus, N.Y.; brother, Marty Austin and his wife Nechia of Bradford, Pa.; niece, Stephanie (Austin) Neilsen and her husband Richard of Indiana, Pa.; two nephews, Jason Austin and his wife Alma of San Antonio, TX, and Jeffrey Austin and his wife Allie of Carnegie, Pa.; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Family and friends are invited to call at Corry First Church, 650 Worth St., Corry, today from 11 a.m. until the time of the service there at 1 p.m. Rev. Duk He Han will officiate.
Burial will be in McKean Memorial Park, Lewis Run, Pa.
