Helen M. Salter, 83, of St. Marys, PA passed away on Monday, October 30, 2023, with her loving family by her side following a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born on March 13, 1940 in St. Marys, a daughter of the late Merle and Marcella Leightner Herbstritt.

On August 30, 1958, at the St. Marys Church, she married the love of her life, Kenneth Salter, who survives. Together they were blessed more than 65 years of marriage.

Helen was a member of St. Marys Church and retired from St. Marys Carbon after more than 30 years of service.

Helen loved camping with her family, never turning down a chance to sit by the fire and enjoy the company of family and friends.  Ken and Helen spent more than 57 years camping in Erie, which she fondly referred to as her “happy place”, and where she met and made many friends over the years.  Helen’s greatest joy and pleasure in life was spending time with her family.  She was a remarkable wife, mother, and grandmother who will be remembered for her strength, unending love for her family, and unfailing kindness.

In addition to her husband Ken, she is survived by 3 children; Tim Salter and his wife Patty, Pam Johnston, Luke Salter and his wife Missy, all of St. Marys, by her 4 beloved grandchildren; Tara (Tony) Hnath, Shane (Angela) Johnston, Kenny (Tristin) Salter, and Shelbi (Alex Dykes) Salter; and by her 14 great grandchildren whom she cherished.
She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by 2 brothers; John “Jack” Herbstritt and Joseph “Buzzy” Salter, one grandson; Jesse Johnston, and her son-in-law; Chuck Johnston.

Visitation and Funeral Services for Helen M. Salter are being held privately with the family.
