Michael A. Hoza, 85, of Galeton, PA, passed away on Sunday, August 27, 2023 at UPMC Susquehanna, Williamsport, PA.
Born September 30, 1937, in Wilpen, PA, he was a son of the late Steven and Mary (Fendorak) Hoza. On August 19, 1961, at St. Bibiana’s Catholic Church in Galeton, he married the former Marial Purdy, who survives.
Mike graduated from Lock Haven State Teacher’s College and then taught math and driver’s education at the Galeton Area School District for 35 years.
He was a member of St. Bibiana’s Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Galeton Moose.
Over the years, Mike worked at the John J. Collins Funeral Home, served on the Galeton Borough Council and the Galeton Area School Board. For many years he coached Little League and many levels of basketball at Galeton High School.
He loved the Pittsburgh Pirates and was an avid Galeton High School sports fan and never missed one of his grandchildren’s games. Mike was very devoted to his family and loved the Galeton community.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 62 years, Marial Hoza, are two daughters, Holly Smith and Michele (Scott) Proctor, both of Galeton; six grandchildren, McKenzie (Luke) Knapp, Logan Smith, Mitchell Smith, Michael Proctor, Geoffrey Proctor and Shaleigh (Lee Parker) Proctor; two great grandsons, Dane and Iver Parker; a brother, Steven Hoza, Cincinnati, OH; a sister, Barbara Orr, San Francisco, CA; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Mike was predeceased by a son-in-law, Rick Smith; seven brothers, Joseph, William, Martin, Robert, Donald, Jack and Thomas Hoza; and a sister, Rose Mary Hoza.
Friends may call at St. Bibiana’s Catholic Church in Galeton on Friday, September 1, 2023 from 6-8pm and on Saturday, September 2, 2023 from 10-11am with a Mass of Christian Burial following at 11am. The Rev. Thomas Brown will be the Celebrant. Interment will be in West Hill Cemetery, Galeton.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Galeton Area High School Athletics program, to the Boro Splash Pad Fund, or to the 4th of July Parade Boosters. Both latter donations should be sent to the Galeton Boro Office in memory of Mike with instructions for which fund.
