‘FLATLAND’ ART EXHIBIT COMING TO PITT-BRADFORD

BRADFORD, Pa. – Pitt-Bradford Arts will present “Flatland,” an exhibition by artist Kari Varner, beginning Oct. 26 in the KOA Art Gallery in Blaisdell Hall. The exhibition will explore the lasting effects of industry and human activity on the landscape, focusing on the ecological and economic value placed on environments altered by people.
“Flatland” will open at noon Oct. 26. Admission is free and open to the public. The exhibition will remain on display through December 4.
Varner’s work uses a variety of image-making techniques, including historical photographic processes, satellite imagery, and experimental printing. Through these methods, “Flatland” examines the profound impact of industrialized agriculture on land and water and encourages viewers to consider the many ways humans have changed their surrounding environments.
The exhibition focuses on the traces of human presence that remain within the landscape. Rather than attempting to return to a pre-human version of nature, Varner’s work considers how we can recognize and understand the environments that have already been transformed by human activity.
“Because of these alterations we cannot return to a pre-human form of nature and must instead reckon with the effects of our control,” Varner said in the exhibition description.
Varner holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in electronic media arts design from the University of Denver and a Master of Fine Arts from Washington University in St. Louis. She teaches photography at Binghamton (N.Y.) University.
