WELLSBORO – Continuing his efforts to ensure the community is equipped to fight back against human trafficking, Rep. Clint Owlett (R-Tioga/Bradford) is hosting an education and awareness event at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 29, at North Street Community Church in Canton.

“Human trafficking is one of the fastest-growing crimes in the nation, and it is happening here in the Northern Tier,” Owlett said. “My goal is to help people understand what human trafficking looks like so we can put a stop to it. The only way to end this devastating and heartbreaking crime is to work together.”

When people hear about human trafficking, many think about abduction, smuggling or confinement. Owlett emphasized that is NOT the most common form of trafficking happening in the Commonwealth. Instead, it is children who are being groomed and exploited online right in their own homes.

“The human trafficking education sessions we hosted last year opened a lot of people’s eyes about this crime. I even had a grandmother tell me later what she learned helped save her granddaughter’s life, as the girl was being groomed by a man who was ultimately arrested and locked away,” Owlett said. “I hope others will come out to this event and learn more about how to protect their loved ones and neighbors.”

Speakers at the session include Joe Peters, Wyoming County district attorney; and Korrin Moon, president and founder of Lantern Rescue.
