Growing Old

Pastor B.J. Knefley
Do you remember when you could hardly wait to grow older? Getting a driver’s license, staying out later, or reaching the next big birthday all seemed to fit into one eager phrase: “I can’t wait until I’m ____ so I can ____.” Somewhere along the way, that kind of anticipation begins to slow down. Life still brings milestones, but they often feel different from the ones we dreamed about as children or teenagers. In young adulthood, many of us become absorbed in work, family, and daily responsibilities. Important moments still happen—the birth of a child, a new season of life, or a long-awaited retirement—but we may not stop to think about them in the same way.
Growing old is something all of us are doing. No matter our age, we are always moving forward, and with that movement comes change. Our hopes and dreams may shift from traveling the world to simply figuring out how to get out of bed in the morning. Even bending down to pick something up from the floor can become a challenge. Then again, bending down may be the easy part—getting back up is often the real problem.
Growing old is also about purpose. It is not a random journey. Isaiah reminds us of God’s faithful care: “I have cared for you since you were born. Yes, I carried you before you were born. I will be your God throughout your lifetime – until your hair is white with age. I made you, and I will care for you. I will carry you along and save you.” (Isaiah 46:3-4) The milestones we pass through do not define our lives; what matters is how we move through them. Growing older can feel like a burden, or it can become a meaningful and even exciting journey. Much depends on our perspective. As a follower of Christ, I believe that no matter what is happening in life, God is with me. That does not mean life becomes easy or that every day feels happy. It does mean I can live with hope, trusting that every day has purpose—even in the years of growing old. Each morning, I have a choice. I may not be able to change what comes, but I can choose how I respond. Think about it.
