Penn College Athletics At A Glance

Last week in review: In one of the best combined weeks in program history, six Wildcat teams tasted victory, with the men’s and women’s tennis teams going each posting two wins and qualifying third for the United East Conference playoffs, the men’s lacrosse and women’s softball teams both going 2-0, the golf team finishing first in a six-team field, and the archery squad claiming two gold, two silver, a bronze and six All-Region honorees at the USA Archery East Region Outdoor Championships.
On the horizon: The postseason for everyone! Tennis teams will host first-round UEC action on Saturday, while the golf team seeks its fourth consecutive conference championship on Saturday and Sunday. The lacrosse team wraps up its regular season on Wednesday, and the softball team, whose regular season winds down on Saturday, will see postseason action on Wednesday, April 29, while archers await the outdoor nationals in mid-May.
MEN’S TENNIS
Last week’s hometown highlights: Singles winners in Tuesday’s match against Lancaster Bible were Logan Ogden, of South Williamsport, at No. 2; Matt Williams, of Pompton Lakes, New Jersey, at No. 3; Avery Hawk, of York Springs, at No. 4; and Christian Abromovage, of Exeter, at No. 6. Doubles winners were Williams-Hawk at No. 2 and Abromovage-Valentino Barillaro, of Selinsgrove, at No. 3.
On Saturday at Cairn University, singles winners were Kyle Shuler, of Williamsport, at No. 1, Williams at No. 4, and Hawk at No. 5. Doubles winners were Shuler-Josh Myers, of Hughesville, at No. 1 and Ogden-Williams at No. 2.
With five conference wins, the men’s squad has its best single-season UE win mark ever, and its seven overall wins tie a program-best previously achieved in 2015 and 2018.

WOMEN’S TENNIS
Last week’s hometown highlights: Winning in singles on Tuesday against Lancaster Bible College were Lauren Peck, of South Williamsport, at No. 2; Faith Murray, of Dillsburg, at No. 3; Leah Vest, of Muncy, at No. 4; Kiera Wene, of Ephrata, at No. 5; and Cici Miller, of Dover, at No. 6. Wildcat winners in doubles were Murray-Vest at No. 2.
Winners in Friday’s loss at Penn State Altoona were Peck at No. 1 singles and Murray-Wene at No. 2 doubles.
At Cairn University on Saturday, singles winners were Peck at No. 2, Murray at No. 3, Vest at No. 4, Wene at No. 5, and Miller at No. 6. The lone doubles win came from Murray-Wene at No. 2.
The women’s six-win UEC and seven-win overall marks are the best in program history dating to 2013-14.

Last week’s hometown highlights: Gunner Redmond, of Lock Haven, was first among the 32 players who finished on Friday and Saturday in the Bellport Long Island Invitational. Also for the Wildcats, Chase Dillman, of Boyertown, was second, Brady Handy, of Huntingdon, was fourth, and Logan Gawlinski, of Kittanning, was fifth. Redmond had rounds of 74-74—148, Dillman shot 78-74—152, Handy shot 77-78—155, and Gawlinski shot 79-77—156.

SOFTBALL
Last week’s hometown highlights: Going into Saturday’s games against Valley Forge, Payton Crawford, of Bloomsburg, led the team with a .483 batting average, Sofia Mileto, of Loyalsock Township, was at .413, and Ryleigh Rinker, of Poway, California, was at 406. In a twin bill sweep, a sixth-inning bunt single by Sam Shaw, of Warriors Mark, produced the lone run in the first game, and pitcher Mackenzi Tice, of Mansfield, won No. 14 with a nine-strikeout effort in three innings of work. Tice made it twice as nice in the nightcap, tossing a three-hit shutout, fanning 10, and the offense rocked with Crawford driving in seven runs, three on a triple and three on a double, and Rinker and Carissa Lusk, of Lititz, plating three each. At the end of the day, Crawford was batting .485, Rinker .434 and Mileto .418.
Also, for a week that showed 48 strikeouts, a 1.56 ERA and a 5-1 record, including a no-hitter and a one-hitter, Tice was named the United East Pitcher of the Week for April 6-12.

Last week’s hometown highlights: Owen Kupsey, of Chadds Ford, scored five goals and had an assist in Friday’s win at SUNY Brockport. Also for the Wildcats, AJ Dotson, of Wilmington, Delaware, had three goals and four assists; Will Ehret, of Basking Ridge, New Jersey, had three goals and three assists, and Elliot Dotson, of Wilmington, Delaware, had two goals and four assists. In the goal, Ryan Twist, of Great Meadows, New Jersey, had 10 saves and got the win, and Alex Hammond, of Lincoln University, had four saves.
In Saturday’s win over Cairn University, Roman DeCenzo, of Red Bank, New Jersey, had five goals and one assist, Elliot Dotson had four goals and four assists, Kupsey had four goals and one assist, and Hammond got the win in the goal with four saves.

ARCHERY
Last week’s hometown highlights: Taking individual gold in the USA Archery East Region Outdoor Championships on April 11-12 were Roman Moss, of Stillwater, in the men’s barebow event and Josiah Hinojos, of Groton, Connecticut, in the men’s fixed pins. Claiming silver were Colby Dell, of Great Neck, New York, in the men’s compound and Liz Gruodis, of Milford, in the women’s barebow. Bronze went to Tayton Roys, of Port Allegany, in the men’s fixed pins, and fourth was awarded to Anthony Olenchak, of Valhalla, New Jersey, also in men’s fixed pins.
In team competition, Dell, Cannon Youndt, of Denver, and Eli Bartron, of South Williamsport, won in men’s compound, as did Hinojos, Olenchak and Roys in men’s fixed pins. Gruodis and Moss placed second in mixed barebow, and Bartron and Haylee Parker, of Millville, were fifth in the mixed compound.
Named to the All-East Region team were Hinojos, Moss, Bartron, Olenchak, Youndt and Cooper Goldring, of Boca Raton, Florida, who shot in the men’s recurve. Hinojos was also on the All-East squad a year ago.
