To successfully host a community event such as this our small town demonstrated remarkable unity by collaborating closely with the County, Township, Borough and all essential services, showcasing the power of a collective effort to achieve a shared vision for our region. Port Allegany, Pennsylvania, originally known as “Canoe Place,” got its name from its location as a key stopping point on the Allegheny River where travelers would build or repair canoes before continuing their journey by water. Located 30 miles from the headwaters of the Allegheny River, the name was changed to Port Allegany in1838.essentially meaning “The Port on the Allegheny River” a Native American word likely translating to Best Flowing River or Fine River. What better way for a small Pennsylvania Community to share its rich heritage!
