3rd Graders Explore “Into the Woods!”

Third grade students from FSG Elementary, Johnsonburg Area Elementary, Fox Township Elementary, St. Marys Catholic Elementary, and St. Leo’s Elementary schools recently took part in the Into the Woods program — a hands-on educational event focused on forestry, conservation, and environmental stewardship. The event was hosted by Ridgway FSG Elementary School through a collaboration between the Community Education Center (CEC) and the Allegheny Hardwoods Utilization Group (AHUG).
Presenters from AHUG, the Elk County Conservation District, the Cameron County Outdoor Youth Association, and the Lumber Heritage Region engaged students in a rotation of interactive learning stations highlighting the many ways forests support life, industry, and recreation.
At the Forest of Many Uses station, students took on the roles of trees, learning how sustainable forest management allows forests to thrive while meeting human needs. The Wildlife activity had students buzzing with excitement as they simulated the pollination process of bees and discovered how forests support a wide range of animal species.
Students also explored Pennsylvania’s rich natural heritage through the History of Penn’s Woods activity, which used historical photos to connect the state’s past to the present-day forestry industry. In Future in the Forest, a forest-career-themed bingo game helped students discover the skills needed for future jobs. At the Stream Table, students observed firsthand how water, erosion, and human development shape the land.
“The Into the Woods program encourages students to appreciate our forests and the environment while introducing them to the many career opportunities rooted in forestry and conservation”, said Amy Goode, Program Manager at the CEC. The program will run again in the Spring for St. Marys elementary and Cameron County 3rd grade students.
