BRADFORD, Pa. – Faculty from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford won awards, presented their research, edited books and more over this past summer.
Dr. Nancy McCabe, professor of writing, received awards for her two latest novels. Her comic novel “The Pamela Papers” won the 2024 Next Generation Indies Award for Humor/Comedy and was a finalist in the pandemic literature category. Her young adult novel “Vaulting through Time” was a finalist for the Montaigne Medal, the Eric Hoffer award for YA literature, the next Generation Indie award for YA literature, and the National Indie Excellence Award for YA fiction.

James J. Macfarlane, 62, of Rew, passed away Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at his home, with his wife Sandy by his side.
Born April 23, 1962, in Bradford, he was a son of the late Robert M. and Olga M. (Pelino) and Macfarlane, Sr.
Jim was a 1980 graduate of Bradford Central Christian High School. He later earned an Associate’s Degree in Petroleum Engineering Technology in 1982, and a Bachelor of Science degree in 1985 in Petroleum Geology both from the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford.
Catherine M. Cuneo, 76, of Buffalo and Formerly of Hemlock Road, St. Marys
Catherine M. Cuneo, 76, of Buffalo and formerly of Hemlock Road, St. Marys, passed away Wednesday, October 2, 2024 at Mercy Hospital in Buffalo.
She was born April 21, 1948 in St. Marys, daughter of the late Victor E. and Mary Margaret Henkel Marconi. Cathy was a lifelong resident of the area and was a retired office manager for PennDOT.
On August 14, 1976 in the Sacred Heart Church, Cathy married the late Charles J. Cuneo, who preceded her in death on July 21, 2013.

Bruce E. DeWalt, 69, of Bradford and winter resident of Kissimmee, FL passed away Wednesday, July 31, 2024, at his home surrounded by family.
Born February 26, 1955, in Spring Valley, IL, he was a son of the late Merlin and Dorothy (Landers) DeWalt. His family relocated to Phoenix AZ when Bruce was very young. He attended schools in Arizona.
State Police investigating two-vehicle fatal accident in the town of Ellicott
On October 10, 2024, at approximately 3:31 p.m., State Police were called to State Route 394 and Water Street in the town of Ellicott for a report of a two-vehicle fatal accident.
A preliminary investigation determined that a 2015 Nissan Sentra driven by Jacqueline C. Visker, 41, of Kennedy, was traveling east on State Route 394.
During the investigation, it was determined that a 2010 Toyota, driven by Lori L. Maloy, 66, of Warren, Pennsylvania along with one passenger, Virginia L. Maloy, 95, of Sinclairville, was traveling north on State Route 394 when she stopped at a stop sign, then pulled into the path of Visker.
Virginia L. Maloy died at the scene.
Visker and L. Maloy were transported to UPMC Chautauqua for evaluation.
The investigation is ongoing.

Donald P. Trumbull, 77, of Center St. in Clarendon, passed away Thursday (Oct. 3) at UPMC-Hamot. He was born July 8, 1947 in Warren the son of the late Mitchell and Shirley Trumbull. He married Linda Hetrick who survives.
Don had driven bus for many years both Tour Bus and School Bus. He also served in the Marines during the Vietnam War.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family.

Sherry M. Davidson, 67, of Curtis Rd. in Ludlow, passed away Thursday (Oct. 3) at UPMC-Hamot. Born May 23, 1957 in Kane, she is the daughter of the late Gerald and Ruth (Beane) Holmes. On Sept. 3, 1977 in Kane she married Daniel Davidson, who preceded her in death.
Sherry had worked in home health care. She had several nieces, nephews,grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and she loved each and every one of them. She had a heart of gold and would do anything for anyone. She would always put others needs before her own.

Jay B. Alexander, 67, of 433 High Street, Bradford, passed away Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at Bradford Regional Medical Center.
Born on April 19, 1957, in Bradford, he was a son of the late Gerald M. and Gwendolyn L. (Thrush) Alexander. He was a 1975 graduate from Bradford High.
On August 29, 1992, in Bradford, he married Wendy M. (Tyger) Alexander, who survives.
Jay worked for Lloyd-Smith, drilling water wells for 37 years. He worked in the oil industry for Cline Oil and Philips & Dart and was employed as a custodian at Bradford Area School District working at Fretz Middle School.
He was an avid Steelers fan, loved to hunt, fish, camp, dig leeks, watch Mash and Gunsmoke, and spend time with his dog Jasmine.
In addition to his wife of 32 years, he is survived by three children, Jocylen (Michael) Bombasay of Bradford, Jason (Katie) Alexander of Bradford, and Justin (Jenn) Alexander of Hawaii, four grandchildren, Joey Alexander, Hadley Alexander, Isaac Alexander, Johnny Alexander, two sisters, Jayne (Tate) Ingram of Dawsonville GA, Jan S Alexander of Dawsonville GA, three brothers, Gerald (Deanna) Alexander Jr. of Erie, Jack (Denise) S. Alexander of Olean, NY, Jim (Mary) Alexander, of Savannah GA.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
There will be a Celebration of Life held in the summer of 2025 that will be announced at a later date.

Julius J. “Butch” Hepner, age 87, of Russell, PA (formerly of Fairport Harbor, Ohio), died peacefully on Monday, October 7, 2024, at his home in Russell, PA.He was born on May 26, 1937, in Cleveland, Ohio, son of the late Julius and Magdalene (Hartman) Hepner.
At the age of 10, his family moved to Fairport Harbor, Ohio where he resided until 2021 when he moved to Russell, PA to be near his daughter.

HARRISBURG – With the Oct. 21 voter registration deadline rapidly approaching, Pennsylvania Senate State Government Committee Chairman Sen. Cris Dush (R-25) is reminding eligible voters to contact their county elections office with any questions related to voter registration confirmation, election dates, polling place locations and other election-related information.
“Honest, transparent and secure elections remain the cornerstone of our constitutional republic,” said Dush. “Pennsylvania’s elections are run by the commonwealth’s 67 county boards of elections, as such they are the number one local resource to contact for direct voter registration assistance, including what to do if you receive ‘election documents’ in the mail that you did not request.”
House Republicans Continue Fight Against Crime by Holding Violent Criminals Accountable
Members of the Pennsylvania House Republican Caucus unveiled a set of bills aimed at protecting Pennsylvanians by bringing accountability to violent criminals in the Commonwealth.
The legislation is part of a four-pillared package unveiled by House Republicans aimed at combatting crimes in Pennsylvania. Wednesday’s press conference focused on the third and fourth pillars, which cover prosecution and punishment. Other measures in the package focused on prevention and policing.
