Gilbert E. Lentz, Sr., of Sartwell Creek Rd., Port Allegany, PA
Gilbert E. Lentz, Sr., of Sartwell Creek Rd., Port Allegany, PA passed away Sunday (Aug. 6, 2023) in his home, from injuries sustained from a fire.
Born February 9, 1948, in Coudersport, he was a son of Richard F. and Marcia Lininger Lentz. In 1968 he married Patricia Anthony Lentz. In 1998, he married Lynn Reese, who died Sept. 30, 2016.
Gilbert was a setup mechanic having worked for Emporium Specialties and Keystone Automatic of Emporium, before his retirement.

City of Olean, NY Police Department
Lavelle Sotero A.K.A. ” Hawk,” age 38, of 3281 Rt 16 North, Olean was arrested yesterday on an Indictment Warrant for Criminal Sale of a controlled substance 3rd, ( B Felony ) and Criminal possession of a controlled substance 3rd ( B Felony ) for selling Crack Cocaine.
Sotero was arrested at 554 Martha Ave. and was turned over to the Cattaraugus County Sheriff to await further Court proceedings. The Street Crimes Unit was assisted by our Patrol unit and the Southern tier regional drug task force.

Charles W. Hollingshead, 75, of Warren, PA, who suffered from and ultimately succumbed to complications of agent orange, on Tuesday evening, August 8, 2023, with his wife at his side.
Chuck was born January 31, 1948, in Warren, PA. He was the son of Charles W. and Angeline R. Musante Hollingshead, Sr.
PennDOT Reopens Route 244 Near Oswayo
Clearfield, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) updated drivers on a box culvert replacement project in Potter County. Replacing the box, which spans Tyler Hollow Run along Route 244 approximately two miles east of Oswayo, improved the structure’s overall condition from “poor” to “good.”
Crews reopened Route 244 between the intersections of Route 4025 (Brizzie Hollow Road) and Route 4011 (Peet Brook Road) this afternoon and lifted the detour implemented on July 27.

Shirley Thompson Beam, 69, formerly of Huntington Twp. and currently of Ulysses, PA
Shirley Thompson Beam, 69, formerly of Huntington Twp. and currently of Ulysses, PA died Wednesday, Aug. 2, 2023, in Williamsport Hospital.
Born Jan. 19, 1954, in Farmington, N.J., she was the daughter of the late Orie and Alice Cochran Thompson.
On Aug. 24, 1985, she married the late Melvin W. “Mel” Beam. Together, they celebrated 25 years of marriage before his death on Aug. 29, 2015.

Bloomfield – Shaun L. Shelley, age 72, passed away peacefully at home, on Saturday, August 5, 2023,with his family by his side.
He is survived by his wife, Edith (Salter) Shelley; three children,
Aaron (Susan) Shelley, Amber Shelley (Scott Browne) and Alicia Olcott; two grandchildren, Alexis Peck and Michael Hurt II; brother, Terry (Valerie) Shelley; brother-in-law, Tom(Laura) Salter; sister-in-law, Amy Weidow; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother in-law, Donald Salter.
Shaun was born in St. Marys, PA and was the son of Francis and Dorothy (Scepanik) Shelley. He was a graduate of Cameron County High School, class of 1969 and earned an associate’s degree from Pennsylvania College of Technology, class of 1972.
Shaun worked at Southco, Inc., in Honeoye Falls, for over 30 years. He enjoyed hunting, going to the beach and spending time with his family.

Patricia F. Frey, 82, of 117 Frey Road, Kersey, PA passed away Tuesday, August 8, 2023, at her home, following a lengthy illness.
She was born July 30, 1941, in Cambridge, MA, daughter of the late George and Helen Pratt Campbell.
On June 3, 1967, in St. John the Evangelist Church in Cambridge, MA, Pat married Richard J. Frey, who survives. They were blessed to share 56 years of marriage.

Penn State Extension to offer Solar Law Symposium
The third annual Penn State Solar Law Symposium for attorneys and energy professionals will be held virtually on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, from noon to 4:30 p.m.
The event, co-sponsored by Penn State Extension, Penn State’s Center for Energy Law and Policy, and the Penn State Center for Agricultural and Shale Law, is designed for those with beginning and intermediate levels of solar law knowledge. The program will continue building on the information from previous years’ symposiums.
Stephen (Steve) Lee Cornell, 78, Middlebury Center, PA
On the morning of Monday, August 7, 2023, a great loss was felt by the family and friends of Stephen (Steve) Lee Cornell. A brave man with great courage, who taught his loved ones to persevere through challenges and heartache, to embrace life, to acknowledge one’s blessings, and to cherish each moment you have with the ones you love.
Steve’s children: Mary (Curt) Owlett, Carol (Carl) Buss, James (Kelly) Cornell and Christine (Gary) Cardinale along with his nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren will forever be blessed by knowing and loving him.
Aaron “Hank” Thorne, 79, of Galeton, PA
Aaron “Hank” Thorne, 79, of Galeton, PA, passed away on Tuesday, August 8, 2023 at the home of his companion, Ruth Webb.
Born August 18, 1943 in Wana, WV, he was a son of the late Addison and Ruby (Jones) Thorne.
Hank worked at the Cooper Company in Genesee, PA for many years. He was a talented musician who could play the guitar and mandolin, and especially enjoyed playing bluegrass, country and gospel music. He had an amazing sense of humor and was loved by all that knew him.
In addition to his companion, Ruth Webb, Hank was survived by two sisters, Barbara McNeill and Betty Ingram, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Hank was preceded in death by his companion of 40 years, Bessie Paul and two brothers, James and Arthur Thorne. As per Hank’s wishes, there will be no services at this time.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

St. Marys Area United Way Awards Grant to Elkland SAR
Elk County- Doug Gaffey, St. Marys Area United Way President; Jim Ryan, United Way Vice-President; and Doug Bauer, United Way Payroll Campaign Chair presented a $5,000 grant award to Elkland Search and Rescue volunteers, Matt Young, Whitney Stewart, Harry Smith, Ronnie Herbstritt, Andy Lenze and Terry Detsch.
The funds were awarded to Elkland to help assist them with the purchase of a drone. The drone can be used for tactical search efforts by provided the Elkland search teams by offering long-range aerial views and thermal imaging to precisely locate lost individuals.
The Mission of Elkland Search and Rescue Association, Inc. is to locate, medically stabilize and evacuate people who are lost, trapped, stranded or missing in all types of weather and terrain.
Elkland Search and Rescue are one of the many partnering organizations that have sought grant money from the St. Marys Area United Way. The grant funding disseminated in 2023 is as a result of the funding raised during the St. Marys Area United Way 2022 campaign. Funding raised in 2023 will be available for organizations to seek grant funding in 2024.
