Two receive scholarship awards for aspiring conservationists.
OLEAN, N.Y., August 8, 2023 — Two recent area graduates received scholarship awards from funds managed by the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation for aspiring environmental conservationists.
Ten Broeck Academy/Franklinville Central School’s Benjamin Brol and Olean High School’s Joshua Knight each received the Cattaraugus County Trappers Memorial Scholarship for $500.
Established by the Cattaraugus County Trappers Association, this fund provides two $500 awards for graduating high school students in Cattaraugus, Allegany or Chautauqua counties with preference for students who plan to pursue a degree in natural resources conservation, fish & wildlife management, forest management or similar area of study at a two- or four-year college. Applicants must include list of outdoors sports in which they participate, a statement on importance of the role of sportsmen in conservation and management of fish and wildlife and natural resources and information on their career path in their goal statement

Judith E. Nichols, 79, of Emporium, PA
Judith E. Nichols, 79, of Emporium, PA passed away peacefully at her home with her family by her side Monday (Aug. 7, 2023), after a long, hard-fought seven-year battle with cancer.
Judy was born in St. Marys on Oct. 30, 1943, to Sherman W. and Marjorie June (Thomas) Allman. On June 17, 1989, in Roulette she married Theodore Nichols, who survives.

The product looks like a soft serve cup served in an ice cream store, with a clear plastic cover with a seal and spoon attached to it. |

Alice Q. Dollinger, 89, a resident of Pinecrest Manor and formerly of 476 Main Street, Kersey, PA.
Alice Q. Dollinger, 89, a resident of Pinecrest Manor and formerly of 476 Main Street, Kersey, passed away Thursday, August 10, 2023.
She was born December 5, 1933, in St. Marys, daughter of the late Urban and Alvina Hoffman Gregory. Alice was a lifelong resident of the area and attended St. Marys schools.
On May 2, 1959, in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Alice married the late Charles “Chub” Dollinger, who preceded her in death on January 15, 2020.

PennDOT Announces New 511PA Features Ahead of the Little League World Series
New features also include additional bridge information, human trafficking prevention
Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) today announced updates to the 511PA traveler information service including new features and real-time travel and alternate-route information for fans headed to the Little League World Series (LLWS).
The new and enhanced features provide timely information and also support efforts to combat human trafficking.
Michael Patrick Close, 63, of Bradford, PA.
Michael Patrick Close, 63, of Bradford, passed away on Sunday, August 6, 2023, at his residence.
Born September 8, 1959 in Bradford, he was a son of the late Charles and Patricia (Hannon) Close.
Michael was a 1977 graduate of Bradford Area High School. While in high school he worked at JC Penney, and after graduating was hired at Dresser Manufacturing, where he worked for ten years.
In 1988 he graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania Police Training Academy. After graduating he returned to Bradford and began working at the McKean County Sheriff’s Department. He also worked part time as a security guard for the Bradford City Water Authority.
On January 12,1990, Michael embarked on his journey with the Bradford City Police Department, taking the oath of patrolman. On April 5, 2004, he achieved the rank of Sergeant. He was then promoted to Chief of Police on January 7, 2008, and held that position until his retirement on March 17, 2010. As Chief, he was proud to have established the Emergency Response Team, the Street Crimes Unit, and to have secured grants and donations for cameras, tasers, firearms, and other equipment, including new uniforms and a fresh paint scheme on the patrol cars.
Kathy Dayok, 74, of Warren, PA.
Kathy Dayok, 74, of Warren, PA., died Thursday morning, August 10, 2023, at Warren General Hospital, Warren, PA. She was born May 9, 1949, in Johnstown, PA. She was the daughter of Peter and Margaret Knapp Dayok. Kathy was a graduate of West Mont High School, and Mercy Hospital School of Nursing, both of Johnstown, PA. She was a registered nurse with Warren General Hospital for 42 years, retiring in 2013.
Kathy is survived by her 3 siblings – Louise Cable of Warren, PA., Timothy Dayok of Zephyrhills, David Dayok and wife, Angela of Johnstown, PA., 1 Nephew – Jason Cable of Pittsburgh, PA., 2 Nieces – Melissa Dayok McLain of Harrisburg, PA., and Jennifer Dayok Caruso of Columbia, MD., 1 Great Nephew – Sam Caruso of Columbia, MD.

Closure of County Road #2 and #2B in the Town of West Almond
Please be advised that Allegany County DPW will have daily road closures as follows:
- County Road #2B approximately ¼ mile south of County Road #2 on Tuesday, August 15, 2023, and;
- County Road #2 approximately ¼ mile west of County Road #2B on Wednesday, August 16, 2023.
The roads will only be closed during working hours (7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) and will be opened back up each night. There will not be an on-site detour and motorists are urged to seek alternate routes. Thank you for your cooperation.
