Softball Season Continues for Penn College

While the United East Conference postseason continues for the Pennsylvania College of Technology women’s softball team, it came to an end over the weekend for the college’s men’s lacrosse and baseball teams.
Softball
Hosting fifth-seeded St. Elizabeth University in a best-of-three UE second-round series, Mackenzie Weaver of Montoursville pitched a three-hit shutout, fanning eight, in Friday’s first game, and the fourth-seeded Wildcats scored three unearned runs in a 4-0 win.
Freshman Mackenzi Tice of Mansfield took the mound in Friday’s second game and spun her first collegiate career no-hitter, striking out 10 and walking two in an 8-0, six-inning win. Another freshman, Peyton Crawford of Bloomsburg sparked the offense, going 3 for 3 at the plate with a double and three RBIs, and Sofia LaSpina of Bellmore, New York, delivered a two-run home run.
In UE first-round games last Wednesday, No. 7 Wilson College defeated No. 10 Rosemont College and No. 8 Penn State Abington defeated No. 9 Notre Dame (Md.) University.
In other second-round games on Friday, No. 1 Penn State Berks (18-0 all UE, 25-7 overall) swept Penn State Abington, No. 2 Penn State Brandywine (16-2, 32-8) swept Wilson College and No. 3 Penn State Harrisburg (15-3, 27-11) swept No. 6 Cedar Crest College.
Advancing to the double elimination UE Final Four hosted by regular-season champion Penn State Berks, Penn College (12-6, 26-13) will open play at 10 a.m. on Friday against Berks. Action continues Saturday.
Earlier in the week, Weaver was named the UE Player of the Week after she batted .438 with seven hits, six RBIs and three runs scored in four games against Penn State Harrisburg (April 22) and Penn State Berks (April 27).

Men’s Lacrosse
On Wednesday, the second-seeded Wildcats continued their record-setting season by getting their 14th win with a 19-2 United East semifinal victory over third-seeded Bryn Athyn. Elliot Dotson of Wilmington, Delaware, scored five goals and had two assists, while Owen Kupsey of Chadds Ford added four goals, setting the stage for Saturday’s championship showdown at top-seeded St. Mary’s (Md.) College.
Saturday in the UE Championship, Penn College grabbed an early 2-0 lead after goals by Elliot Dotson and Kupsey before St. Mary’s tallied 13 in a row en route to its 21-8 title-clinching victory. Kupsey finished with two goals and Eliot Dotson ended with two assists and the winningest season in the program’s five-year history came to a close.
Earlier in the week, Walt Heiser of Milford, New Jersey, captured the season’s final UE Defensive Player of the Week honor after he led the Wildcats defense on April 26 in a 28-3 victory against Bryn Athyn. The senior defenseman caused a team-high three turnovers and scooped up two ground balls.

Baseball
On Friday, in a best-of-three United East second-round series, fourth-seeded Penn College dropped its opener against No. 5 Cairn University, 12-5, and lost the second game, 19-14, bringing its season to a close.
In the first game, the Wildcats built a 5-2 lead through seven innings — getting solo home runs from Jaydon Goebel of Honey Brook in the second frame and Nathan Gustkey of Philipsburg in the third — before surrendering six runs in the eighth and four runs in the ninth. Goebel and Gustkey both finished with two RBIs. On the mound, Griffin Vollman of Williamsport went seven innings, allowing five runs, and Wyatt Hershey of McConnellsburg, the first of three relief pitchers, took the loss as Cairn hammered out 15 hits.
Brandon Shane of Boyertown homered and doubled, driving in four runs in the second game, while Dallas Griess of Williamsport hit a solo home run, and Gustkey and Goebel each plated two runs. Ethan Hannevig of Pine Grove started on the rubber and gave up nine runs in 3.2 innings, but Gabe Reptsik of Pennsburg, the third of five Wildcat pitchers, took the loss.

CATS Award Honorees
Several student-athletes were honored on Monday at the eighth annual Celebrating Athletic Triumphs and Successes (CATS) ceremony.
Freshman Megan Kurian of Royersford (women’s soccer) and senior Livingston Cross of Union, New Jersey (men’s basketball) were selected as the Female and Male Athletes of the Year, while Kurian and freshman Elliot Dotson of Wilmington, Delaware (men’s lacrosse) won the Female and Male Newcomer of the Year awards.
Kurian burst onto the scene in her freshman campaign, setting single-season goals, assists and points records while leading the Wildcats to an undefeated regular season (15-0-4) and a run to the United East semifinals. She scored 26 goals, 15 assists and 67 points while appearing in all 20 games for the. Kurian was named United East Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year while also earning first-team all-conference honors and was a United Soccer Coaches All-Region second-team selection.
Cross led NCAA Division III with 23 double-doubles, averaging 22.3 points and 13.2 rebounds while starting in all 28 games. Cross earned United East All-Conference first-team honors while leading the team on a Cinderella run to the conference semifinals as the No. 12 seed.
Dotson led the Wildcats with 53 assists and 96 points and was second with 43 goals while leading the United East with an average of 5.05 points per game. He posted eight hat tricks, including a season-high five goals in games against Guilford, Rosemont and Bryn Athyn twice, to lead the Wildcats to the second seed in the playoffs.
Senior Kayleigh Miller of Sayre (women’s basketball and cross-country) and senior Walt Heiser of Milford, New Jersey (men’s lacrosse) earned the Female and Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year honors.
Miller, a two-sport athlete while maintaining a 4.0 GPA, helped the Wildcats to a fourth-place finish in the UE Championship race, and on the basketball court she scored 71 points and dished out 31 assists in 25 games. She earned the UE Elite 20 Award in cross-country and the Senior Scholar-Athlete award in women’s basketball. Miller also is the vice president of Student-Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC).
Heiser is a key member of the lacrosse defensive unit that posted its winningest season with a 13-4 record and a No. 2 seed in the playoffs. He finished the regular season leading the team with 37 ground ball pickups and he was seventh with 11 caused turnovers. Miller is the Wildcats’ SAAC president.
Senior Mackenzie Weaver of Montoursville (softball) was honored with the One Shining Moment Award as she recorded her 500th career strikeout against Notre Dame (Md.) University on March 29.
In the first SAAC Awards category, seniors Tommy DeGeyter of Long Valley, New Jersey (men’s soccer) and Emily Pardee of Williamsport (women’s basketball) were named Mr. and Ms. Wildcat.
Senior Noah Hunt of Muncy (wrestling) and Kurian were selected as the Breakout Moment winners.
Senior Nathan Gustkey of Philipsburg (baseball) was selected as the Comeback Player of the Year, and Eric Hunt, the athletic communications coordinator, was selected as the Staff Member of the Year.
Men’s lacrosse earned the Community Service Award for the third straight year.
