Sherry Ann CORNEBY, 73, of Genesee, PA
Sherry Ann CORNEBY, 73, of Genesee, PA, died Tuesday, October 24, 2023 in her home after a two-year battle with severe diabetes and kidney disease.
Born October 30, 1949, in Reading, she was the daughter of Robert A. and Dorris M. Dinkle Steinmetz.
A 1967 graduate of Governor Mifflin Senior High School in Shillington, she earned a bachelor’s degree in German and secondary education from Mansfield University in 1971, and later earned a master’s degree while teaching at Whitesville Central School.
Sherry was a member of Gamma Theta Upsilon, the international honor society in geography, and Delta Phi Alpha, the German Academic Honor Society. In 1970, Sherry was awarded the Carl Schurz Foundation Scholarship to study in West Germany.
She began her teaching career at Athens Area High School in 1971, where she taught German and world geography. In 1974, she obtained her permanent certification in German.
While teaching in Athens, she met and eventually married Frank Norris Corneby on July 19, 1975 in the North Waverly Chapel, Waverly NY. They began their married life in Sayre, PA, but shortly thereafter moved to Whitesville NY, where they lived upstairs over Don Kelley’s on Maple Street.
During that time, Sherry worked for her long-time friends, Max and Gloria Shay, at Shay’s Red & White in Whitesville. Sherry and her husband, along with other members of the Corneby family, were partners in Whitesville Wood Products.
In 1981, Sherry and Norris moved to Genesee, PA. She began her teaching career at Whitesville Central School in 1985 when she was hired to be a long-term substitute for Carole O’Hagan in the high school English department. Upon Mrs. O’Hagan’s return, Sherry was moved to the elementary school where she would teach 5th grade and reading until her retirement in 2012. Sherry was a beloved and dedicated teacher at Whitesville for 27 years.
She attended Gold Church and was a woman of faith. A staunch Republican, she was always open for a debate concerning politics and was an avid viewer of Fox News.
Surviving are her adopted Luce family who she viewed as her own and loved unconditionally over the years, Kathy Luce of Genesee, Scott Luce of Rochester, NY, and Eric Luce of Genesee; a brother-in-law John (Kim Glidden) Corneby of Genesee; a niece, Elisha Colter of Binghamton, NY; a grandnephew, Warren; and a host of friends, including, Denise Sharp, Kim and Lynn Ruffner, Scot and Claire Miller, Jeri Reichman, Kim Howe, Vicky Ross, and Max and Gloria Shay.
She was predeceased by her husband, Norris, on June 30, 2002; her parents; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Frank and Grace Corneby; and dear friend and neighbor, Judy Glover.
Friends may call at Gold Church, 2402 SR 49 W, Ulysses, PA on Monday, October 30, 2023 from 2:00 – 4:00 PM, with Funeral Services following at 4:00 PM. Rev. Cameron Cowburn, Pastor, will officiate and Rev. Frank Mickle will lead the remembrance time. Burial will be in Genesee Cemetery.
