Shawmut Depot Hosts Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Regional Disc Golf Tournament
Colleges from Ohio, Kentucky, Virginia, New York and Pennsylvania will be converging on Clermont this weekend to compete in College Disc Golf’s Mid-Atlantic Regional Qualifier. The battle unfolds both Saturday 10am – 5pm and Sunday 8am – 2pm October 29-30th. The full field of 72 collegiate players will be competing on the newly opened Shawmut Depot Disc Golf Course to qualify for two coveted Division 1 bids to the College Disc Golf National Championship taking place April 2023.
Brenda Walker and her nephew, Josh Menteer, started installation on Shawmut Depot Disc Golf Course in the Spring of 2021. Featuring over 100 acres of tight wooded fairways, natural ponds, peaks and ravines, the course will challenge the most advanced players. Disc golf enthusiasts have traveled near and far to play Shawmut Depot, including 2021 World Champion James Conrad!
Locals are welcome to show up at 14063 Wilcox Rd, Clermont, PA 16740 on Saturday and Sunday to watch discs fly and cheer on their Regional favorite schools: Penn State, University at Buffalo, Houghton, Behrend, and Rochester Institute of Technology. A handful of schools will also be traveling from other Regions including the University of Kentucky, Eastern Mennonite University, Ohio State University and Toledo University.
A large fundraiser raffle is going to be held Sunday after the tournament to benefit Smethport and Johnsonburg elementary schools, with the proceeds going towards disc golf equipment and curriculum for PE Teachers. Raffle tickets will be available all weekend at Shawmut Depot.
“The sport of disc golf is exploding across the United States with an average of five new courses every single day. As an underserved area, it is incredible to be able to host such a high caliper event right in our backyard” said Tournament Director Rich Longer. “You can drive eight hours to an Elite Series event and find, like I did, College Sports remains the highest form of entertainment. These are the pros of the future and they are playing for much more than a paycheck.” This tournament would not be possible without the generous support of local volunteers and event sponsors: Lantz Corners Getaway, Erie Insurance, Bonnie & John Orr, Ameriprise Financial, McKean County E-Sales, Paul’s Trading Post, Scentsy, Fox Financial and Horn & Hammer.
