OLEAN, NY–Phyllis M. Brady, 88, of Olean, NY passed away comfortably at home with her children by her side on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, from complications of scleroderma.
She was born on April 30, 1935, in Buffalo and was the daughter of Walter and Elizabeth Patrzyk Stachewicz. Phyllis was a graduate of East High School in Buffalo.
She was a proud member of the CYO, softball team, and was the Buffalo area ping-pong champion. After graduation she worked for City Memorials in Buffalo and was the Secretary to the owner of Dzienik Polish Newspaper.
On August 4, 1956, she married James A. Brady who predeceased her on June 21, 2013. She then became a stay-at-home mom living in Buffalo and Minnesota before moving to Olean in 1965.
When the children were older Phyllis worked at Oakleaf’s in downtown Olean then became a sales associate at Morgan Stanley where she retired.
Phyllis enjoyed spending time and visiting with her family and many friends. She was an outstanding hostess who loved attending to the needs of everyone. She would never fail to offer guests a “nice cold drink.” She was a member of St. John’s Roman Catholic Church where she served as a Eucharistic Minister and was the rectory cook for many years. She volunteered for Meals on Wheels and was a member of the Welcome Wagon.
Phyllis enjoyed playing games, especially bridge, eating out, exploring for new restaurants, watching western movies, music, dancing, or simply sitting in her backyard watching her son and grandsons golfing.
Surviving are her son Jim of Olean; daughters Debbie (Jim) Griffin of Olean and Kathy Grace of Olean; her grandchildren Patrick Griffin, Meagan (Ryan) Alberts, Alison (Pete) Ash, Scott Brady, Rachael Grace, and Alex (Katie) Grace; and great grandchildren Adele, Lydia, Claire, John, and Kate; numerous nieces and nephews; brother Jerry (Marcia) Stack of Cheektowaga; and cousins Terri (Ali) Meszaros and Christine Heitzenrater. In addition to her parents and husband, Phyllis was predeceased by her son-in-law Dr. Timothy Grace.
A memorial service will be held at St. John’s in Olean at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 23rd. Visitation at the church will begin at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to St. Jude’s or a charity of your choice.
Burial will be in the St. Bonaventure Cemetery in Allegany, NY.
