Clearfield, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced the following schedule of maintenance activities in Potter County the week of July 21. PennDOT performs year-round maintenance in its mission to provide a safe, efficient transportation system, and the scope of work in Potter County for the coming week is as follows:

Mechanized Patching

• Route 1011 (West Bingham Road/Hickox-Ulysses Road) between Route 49 in Ulysses Borough and Route 1010 (Genesee Mills Road) in Genesee Township. Monday, July 21, through Friday, July 25. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
• Route 1013 (Bingham Centre Road) between Route 1011 (West Bingham Road/Hickox-Ulysses Road) and the New York-Pennsylvania State line in Bingham Township. Monday, July 21, through Friday, July 25. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

Mechanized patching is used to patch limited roadway areas that have extensive potholes, large areas of cracked pavement, and depressions. If mechanized patching was not performed, the damaged road surface would further deteriorate, resulting in PennDOT needing to completely rebuild the road or perform more costly corrective measures.

Pipe Replacing & Cleaning

• Route 44 between the Lycoming-Potter County line in Stewardson Township and Route 6 in Sweden Township. Monday, July 21, through Thursday, July 24. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
• Route 144 between the Clinton-Potter County line and Route 44 in Stewardson Township. Monday, July 21, through Thursday, July 24. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
• Route 6 between Route 44 and South Dry Run Road in Sweden Township. Monday, July 21, through Thursday, July 24. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
• Route 144 between the Clinton-Potter County line and Route 44 in Stewardson Township. Monday, July 21, through Thursday, July 24. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
• Route 2002 (West Street/West Branch Road) between Route 44 and Heinrich Road in West Branch Township. Monday, July 21, through Thursday, July 24. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

• Route 2002 (West Street/West Branch Road) between Corbett Road and Notch Road in West Branch Township. Monday, July 21, through Thursday, July 24. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
• Route 3001 (East Fork Road) between Marvin Run Road and Michaels Drive in Wharton Township. Monday, July 21, through Thursday, July 24. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
• Route 4023 between Route 44 and Bickleman Road in Sharon Township. Monday, July 21, through Thursday, July 24. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

Pipe replacement and cleaning are essential in maintaining water flow around state roadways. Controlling water flow is one of the most important aspects of maintaining pavements. Uncontrolled water flow will damage both the pavement surface and the area under the pavement, which causes deterioration across the length of the pipe.

Side Dozing

• Route 6 between Route 44 and Eckert Lane in Sweden Township. Monday, July 21, through Thursday, July 24. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

Side dozing removes excess material from beneath guide rail areas, which improves drainage and allows water to sheet flow off the roadway. Side dozing is a crucial highway maintenance operation because when drainage systems do not function properly, water collects on the road, weakens pavement, accelerates the formation of potholes, and creates the potential for icing conditions in the winter months.

Vegetation Management

• The entirety of Route 44 in Potter County. Monday, July 21, through Friday, July 25. This work takes place off the roadway and has minimal, if any, traffic impact, however PennDOT still urges drivers to exercise caution when passing crews working along the shoulder.
• Route 244 Monday, July 21, through Friday, July 25. This work takes place off the roadway and has minimal, if any, traffic impact, however PennDOT still urges drivers to exercise caution when passing crews working along the shoulder.
• Route 449 between Route 6 in Ulysses Township and River Road in Genesee Township. Monday, July 21, through Friday, July 25. This work takes place off the roadway and has minimal, if any, traffic impact, however PennDOT still urges drivers to exercise caution when passing crews working along the shoulder.
• Route 1011 (Hickox-Ulysses/West Branch Road) between Route 1010 (Genesee Mills Road in Genesee Township and Route 49 in Ulysses Borough. Monday, July 21, through Friday, July 25. This work takes place off the roadway and has minimal, if any, traffic impact, however PennDOT still urges drivers to exercise caution when passing crews working along the shoulder.
• Route 4009 (Baker Creek Road) between Route 49 in Eulalia Township and Route 4008 (Branch Road) in Allegany Township. Monday, July 21, through Friday, July 25. This work takes place off the roadway and has minimal, if any, traffic impact, however PennDOT still urges drivers to exercise caution when passing crews working along the shoulder.
• Route 4011 (Peet Brook Road) between Route 49 and Route 244 in Allegany Township. Monday, July 21, through Friday, July 25. This work takes place off the roadway and has minimal, if any, traffic impact, however PennDOT still urges drivers to exercise caution when passing crews working along the shoulder.

Mowing, herbicide spraying, and selected tree thinning help maintain a safe roadway free of obstructing vegetation, improving visibility to spot signage, traffic control devices, and other motorists, bicyclists, pedestrians, and animals approaching the road. Additionally, a well-maintained roadside can improve drainage and prolong the life of the roadway.
