PennDOT Potter County Maintenance Work Schedule for the Week of August 18
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced the following schedule of maintenance activities in Potter County the week of August 18. PennDOT performs year-round maintenance in its mission to provide a safe, efficient transportation system, and the scope of work in Potter County for the coming week is as follows:
Mechanized Patching
· Route 6 between Old Route 6 in Ulysses Township and Red Angus Lane in Pike Township. Monday, August 18, through Friday, August 22. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
Mechanized patching is used to patch limited roadway areas that have extensive potholes, large areas of cracked pavement, and depressions. If mechanized patching was not performed, the damaged road surface would further deteriorate, resulting in PennDOT needing to completely rebuild the road or perform more costly corrective measures.
Surface Treatment
· Route 1001 (Brookland Road/Fox Hill Road/Sweden Hill Road/ South Main Street) for the entirety of the route between Route 449 in Ulysses Township and Route 6 in Sweden Township. Monday, August 18, through Friday, August 22. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
Route 1002 (North Hollow Road) the entirety of the route between Route 4013 (Hollow Road) and Route 1001 (Brookland Road) in Sweden Township. Monday, August 18, through Friday, August 22. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
· Route 1011(West Bingham Road/Hickox-Ulysses Road) for the entirety of the route between Route 49 in Ulysses Borough and Academy Street in Genesee Township. Monday, August 18, through Friday, August 22. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
Route 4011 (Peet Brook Road) the entirety of the route between Route 49 and Route 244 in Allegany Township. Monday, August 18, through Friday, August 22. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
· Route 4013 (Hollow Road) between Route 6 in Coudersport Borough and Route 49 in Allegany Township. Monday, August 18, through Friday, August 22. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
Route 4017 (Shay Town/Sunny Side Road/Oswayo Street) between the McKean-Potter County line in Sharon Township and Route 44 in Shinglehouse Borough. Monday, August 18, through Friday, August 22. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
Commonly known as “oil and chip” or “sealcoat,” this operation is a preservation strategy used to maintain mainly low-traffic-volume roads for five to seven years. It is also used on high-volume roads to extend pavement life between resurfacings. Generally, it takes stones about two days to fully bond in the hardened asphalt. Motorists should reduce their speed on these roads until the stones fully adhere to the asphalt. This maintenance seals the road surface to keep water out, restores the friction of the surface to enhance traction, and is very cost-effective.
Vegetation Management
· Route 6 between the McKean-Potter County line in Roulette Township and Route 872 in Coudersport Borough. Monday, August 18, through Friday, August 22. This work takes place off the roadway and has little, if any, impact on traffic.
· Route 4011 (Peet Brook Road) the entirety of the route between Route 49 and Route 244 in Allegany Township. Monday, August 18, through Friday, August 22. This work takes place off the roadway and has little, if any, impact on traffic.
Mowing, herbicide spraying, and selected tree thinning help maintain a safe roadway free of obstructing vegetation, improving visibility to spot signage, traffic control devices, and other motorists, bicyclists, pedestrians, and animals approaching the road. Additionally, a well-maintained roadside can improve drainage and prolong the life of the roadway.
This schedule is subject to change due to weather conditions, emergencies, or other unforeseen interruptions.
