Penn College set for regional wrestling
The Pennsylvania College of Technology wrestling team takes six ranked matmen into this weekend’s NCAA Division III Region 2 Championship at Lycoming College. Matches begin at 10 a.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
“I am pleased with how our regular season went. We battled some injury and sickness, as does any other team, but have come through on the other side and are set for a great run at regionals,” first-year coach Dalton Rohrbaugh said.
“The big highlight of our season was our first Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference title, which was won in dominating fashion with eight out of the 10 champions being from Penn College,” Rohrbaugh said of his squad’s 4-0 AMCC and 7-2 overall dual match season.
According to the coach, starters for the Wildcats at regionals will be freshman Justin Adams of York (21-8) at 125 pounds, sophomore Kaden Ware of Brooklyn, Connecticut at 133 (16-2), senior Noah Hunt of Muncy (15-5 and two wins shy of 100 for his career as he is 98-44), sophomore TJ Martin of Honesdale at 149 (22-7), freshman Gavin Gomes of Denville, New Jersey at 157 (15-9), freshman Carter Davis of York at 165 (26-2), freshman Cole Shupp of Danville at 174 (16-14), junior Isaac Cory of Montoursville at 184 (12-4), sophomore Nick Woodruff of Wyalusing at 197 (17-4) and sophomore Nic Brotzman of Marietta at 285 (20-5).
In regional rankings by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, Cory is third, Hunt is fourth, Davis and Brotzman are fifth, and Ware and Woodruff are sixth, Rohrbaugh said.
Rohrbaugh said that keys to the team’s success so far are “continuously doing the right things on and off the mat. Doing the little things right at practice and making sure the things outside the room, such as our diet, sleep, etc., are taken care of. We have put in the work all year and are peaking at the right time.”
Over the past two years, Penn College wrestlers have found success at regionals, where the top three in each weight class advance to the National Championship on March 14-15 at Providence, Rhode Island.
Last year, Ware was sixth at 133, while Hunt at 141 and Travis Green of Manchester, Maryland, at 165 both were eighth.
Two years ago, Cory finished second at 184 and advanced to nationals, while Hunt was sixth and Ryan Berstler of Middletown was seventh.
In 2022, Hunt was fifth at 141.
The Mideast Region is one of seven in Division III and includes 19 teams. A year ago, the Wildcats were 16th in a 21-team field after ending 11th of 21 in 2023 and tying for 17th in 2022.
