Penn College Athletics at a Glance

Last week in review: In a mid-week United East win at Cedar Crest College, coach Kyle Hawk’s women’s volleyball team secured its first five-win season since 2016 and picked up its second conference win in a season for the first time since 2017.
On the horizon: Playoffs begin this week for the fifth-seeded men’s and third-seeded women’s soccer teams, the United East Conference men’s and women’s cross-country championships are set for Saturday, the women’s volleyball team will play its final two regular-season matches, still hopeful of a postseason berth, and the college’s wrestlers step into action for the first time on Saturday.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Last week’s hometown highlights: In Wednesday’s win at Cedar Crest, Lilly Stockum, of Dauphin, had 20 kills, 14 digs and four aces; Ellen Banfill, of Mill Hall, had 34 assists; Haylie Thomsen, of High Bridge, New Jersey, had 18 digs; and Natalie Vializ, of New Holland, had 16 digs.
Leaders in Saturday’s loss to Wilson were Stockum with 16 kills, Banfill with 24 assists and 14 digs, and Vializ with 24 digs.

MEN’S SOCCER
Last week’s hometown highlights: Second-half goals, one by Silas Miller, of Mechanicsburg, and an own-goal, plus a shutout performance by goalkeeper Justin Crismale, of Glen Gardner, New Jersey, lifted Penn College in Tuesday’s win at Penn State Brandywine.
Wrapping up the regular season on Saturday with a loss to Penn State Harrisburg, Cooper Smith, of Carlisle, had the lone Wildcat shot on goal.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
Last week’s hometown highlights: Olivia Herman, of Barto, and Sara Darlington, of West Chester, each scored two goals in Tuesday’s win over Valley Forge, and the defense didn’t allow a shot on goal while racking up its 10th shutout. Scoring their first goals of the season were Lucy Kontir, of Tasmania, Australia, Ava Bentzel, of Littlestown, and Allison Lynn, of James Creek.
Hosting NCAA Division III Region 5 sixth-ranked Dickinson College in Wednesday’s nonconference match, the Wildcats fell in the first meeting between the two teams. Penn College had four shots on goal, two by Darlington, while goalkeeper Morgan Solano, of Shavertown, made 15 stops.
At home with Lancaster Bible College on Saturday, Darlington and Brooke Klinger, of Herndon, each scored two goals. Solano had four saves in the goal.
Completing its regular season on Sunday with a win at Cedar Crest, seven players got in on the scoring, among them Darlington, with her team-best 18th of the season, and Ella Garman, of Boiling Springs, with her 12th goal, while Solano made two saves.

Last week’s hometown highlights: Pacing the team at the Last Chance Invitational: Holden Furey, of Williamsport, was 15th among 55 in 28:50, Ben Causak, of Lebanon, was 17th in 28:59, Mitchell Campbell, of Riegelsville, was 18th in 29:05, Jacob Parker, of Weatherly, was 25th in 29:55, Ethan Knapp, of Franklin, was 26th in 30:11. Times for Furey, Campbell, Parker and Knapp were season bests, and were personal bests for four others who finished behind them: Oliver Galicki, of Dingmans Ferry (30:30), Ben Heym, of West Chester (31:46), Owen Troop, of Lancaster (32:15), and Matthew Wheeland, of Spring Mills (32:27).

Times for Durn, Greiner, Johnson and Miller were personal bests, and season bests were recorded by Brady and Isabella Telford, of Greensburg (40:25).

Last week’s hometown highlights: Gunner Redmond, of Lock Haven, shot 77-77—154 to finish sixth among 45 players in the York College Spartan Shootout on Sunday and Monday. Also for the Wildcats in their fall season finale, Chase Dillman, of Boyertown, shot 77-80—157 for ninth, Brady Handy, of Huntingdon, shot 83-80—163 and tied for 21st, and Logan Gawlinski, of Kittanning, shot 81-90—171 for 37th.
