Penn College Athletics At A Glance

Last week in review: Penn College sent three wrestlers to the NCAA Division III National Championships, and all of them, although eliminated on Friday’s first day, came away winners and helped the team to its best finish ever (40 of 68) on the national level. Also, the baseball, softball and lacrosse teams all completed their spring break week with victories.
On the horizon: Over the next week and a half, golf and tennis teams will step into spring season action.
WRESTLING
Carter Davis, of York, at 165 pounds, was 3-2 on the sport’s biggest stage in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Nick Woodruff, of Wyalusing, at 197, was 2-2; and Kaden Ware, of Brooklyn, Connecticut, at 141, finished 1-2, with the trio earning a program-record seven national team points during coach Dalton Rohrbaugh’s second season.
Davis started with a win by decision and fell to the third seed before scoring wins by a major decision and decision. His long day then came to a close when he was pinned by the No. 4 seed, concluding his season with a 31-6 record.
Woodruff opened with a decision win and then edged the No. 4 seed in his second bout. Facing the fifth-seed, Woodruff was pinned, and after being pinned again, he closed out a 14-7 campaign.
Ware scored a major decision win in his first match, before a technical fall loss to the No. 3 seed and later a decision loss wrapped up his season at 17-5.
In previous trips to nationals, Isaac Cory, of Montoursville, posted a 1-2 at 184 pounds as a freshman in 2023, and Noah Hunt, of Muncy, was 0-2 as a senior a year ago at 141 pounds. Cory earned one team point in 2023 as the Wildcats ended tied for 52nd of 71 teams. With no team points last year, they were one of 14 teams tied for 61st in a 74-team field.
MEN’S LACROSSE
Last week’s hometown highlights: While improving to a program-best 6-1 start with Monday’s win against North Central College, Will Ehret, of Basking Ridge, New Jersey, had three goals; Aidan McFalls, of Gilbertsville, had two goals and two assists; Owen Kupsey, of Chadds Ford, had two goals and one assist; and goalie Ryan Twist, of Great Meadows, New Jersey, made 11 saves.
In Wednesday’s double-overtime loss at Transylvania University, Elliot Dotson, of Wilmington, Delaware, scored five goals; Ehret had his second hat trick of the week; and McFalls and Braden Holland, of Royersford, both scored twice. Twist had 20 saves in the goal.
Hosting SUNY Morrisville on Saturday, the Wildcats used seven fourth-period goals for a comeback win. McFalls ended the day with four goals and one assist, Kupsey had a hat trick, and Twist made four saves.

SOFTBALL
Last week’s hometown highlights: A 7-1 week with six straight closing wins in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, was a great start to the collegiate coaching career of Amber Savage. Carissa Lusk, of Lititz, led the offense with a .471 batting average; Payton Crawford, of Bloomsburg, hit .462 with four doubles and nine RBIs; Taylor Brown, of Bellefonte, hit .379 with eight RBIs; Ryleigh Rinker, of Poway, California, hit .304; and Sofia Mileto, of Loyalsock Township, hit .300 with 12 runs scored. In the circle, Mackenzi Tice, of Mansfield, was 5-0 in four starts and one relief appearance, with a 1.66 ERA. She struck out 34 and walked 29. In the finale against The College of New Jersey, Tice got behind 4-1 early, but hung in as the offense started clicking, and she went all nine innings for the “W.”

Last week’s hometown highlights: During the team’s 3-4 spring break trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Matt Munoz, of Tobyhanna, led the offense with 12 hits, including four doubles and nine RBIs, while hitting at a .462 clip. Shawn Townsend, of Hatboro, batted .357 with 10 hits and plated six runs; Levi Purnell, of Snow Shoe, batted .333 and drove in eight runs; Dallas Griess, of Williamsport, and Logan Hinnershitz, of Quakertown, both batted .304, with Griess scoring a team-best eight times and Hinnershitz knocking in five runs. Picking up wins on the mound were Dallas Alexander, of Lock Haven, and Weston McClain, of Port Matilda, both in relief, and Anthony Turek, of Lancaster, in a start. The Wildcats outscored their opponents 43-37 but committed 15 errors.
