Penn College Athletics at a Glance

Last week in review: For the first time since becoming NCAA postseason eligible in 2017-18, three Wildcat wrestlers qualified in a single season for the Division III National Championships as a result of their top three Region 2 finishes.
Meanwhile, for the second time in four years, the season ended for the women’s basketball team in the semifinal round of the United East Conference playoffs, bringing to a close the winningest (20-7) campaign in program history that dates to 1997-98.
WRESTLING
Last week’s hometown highlights: Carter Davis, of York, went 3-1 during his matches on Friday and Saturday to finish second in the region, while placing third were Kaden Ware, of Brooklyn, Connecticut, who went 5-1, and Nick Woodruff, of Wyalusing, who went 4-1.
Also, nine Wildcats, three on the first team and six on the second team, were named to the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference All-Conference squad. On the first team were Ware, Davis and Woodruff. On the second team were Blake Dergham, of Slatington; Chris Shaner, of Hughesville; TJ Martin, of Honesdale; Brett Patton, of West Chester; Gavin Gomes, of Denville, New Jersey; and Nic Brotzman, of Marietta. And, coach Dalton Rohrbaugh was awarded Coach of the Year honors.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Last week’s hometown highlights: After falling behind by 12 early in the third quarter, the second-seeded Wildcats fought back to within three points three times in the fourth but could not get over the hump in Wednesday’s loss to No. 3 Penn State Abington. Gigi Parlante, of Williamsport, led Penn College with 28 points and 14 rebounds; Mia Patterson, of Loyalsock Township, scored 12 points, and Breana Valentine, of Fairfield, scored 11.

MEN’S LACROSSE
Last week’s hometown highlights: Aidan McFalls, of Gilbertsville, scored three goals in Wednesday’s loss to Haverford.
With Saturday’s match against Misericordia tied at 14-all, Will Ehret, of Basking Ridge, New Jersey, scored twice in the final 3:28 to lift Penn College to its win. McFalls had four goals and two assists; Elliot Dotson, of Wilmington, Delaware, had three goals and one assist; and Ehret finished with three goals. In the goal, Ryan Twist, of Great Meadows, New Jersey, made three saves.
Also, Elliot Dotson and Twist were honored by the United East Conference as the Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week, respectively, for their play in matches against Juniata College and Alfred University on Feb. 18 and 21.

BASEBALL
Last week’s hometown highlights: In Saturday’s twin bill split against Lancaster Bible, Jaydon Goebel, of Honey Brook, drove in two runs, and Shawn Townsend, of Hatboro, had two hits and scored both runs in the loss. In the second game, Townsend had three hits, scored twice and drove in two runs. Logan Hinnershitz, of Quakertown, had two hits and also scored twice, and McGwire Heverly, of Bellefonte, earned the mound win in relief.

ARCHERY
Hometown highlights: At the USA Archery Indoor Championships, Wildcats taking gold at the Lancaster event were Cannon Youndt, of Denver, in the men’s compound (1,161 points); Josiah Hinojos, of Groton, Connecticut, in men’s fixed pins (1,172); Liz Gruodis, of Milford, in women’s barebow (767); Cooper Goldring, of Boca Raton, Florida, in men’s recurve (1,063), and Roman Moss, of Stillwater, in men’s barebow (838). Earning silver were Eli Bartron, of South Williamsport, in men’s compound (1,157); Haylee Parker, of Benton, in women’s compound (1,028); Hailey Penner, of Muncy, in women’s fixed pins (893), and Kaden Stokes, of Williamsport, in men’s recurve (877). Claiming bronze was Casey Keiter, of Dornsife, in men’s fixed pins (1,140). As a result of those finishes, in the national rankings, Hinojos is 14th, Youndt is 18th, and Bartron and Goldring are 20th, Moss is 22nd and Keiter is 25th.
