Leo F. “Link” Simbeck, 99, of South Michael Street, St. Marys, PA passed away Saturday, June 10, 2023 at DuBois Nursing Home, following a brief illness.
A lifelong resident of St. Marys, he was known for many contributions to the community. Leo spent seventeen years as a member of the board of St. Marys Area School District and was president during the building of the high school. An accomplished public speaker who gave keynote addresses during Memorial Day ceremonies and on many other occasions, he was a co-founder of the original St. Marys Toastmasters Club and a member throughout its existence. He was also a member of the Elk County Concert Association and served various terms as its president.
Leo was born on May 26, 1924, in St. Marys, son of the late Henry and Irene Davis Simbeck. He was a graduate of Central Catholic High School, Class of 1942 and was employed briefly by Speer Carbon Company before being drafted into the United States Army on March 11, 1943. He received his basic training with the 106th Roaring Lion Infantry Division at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. On D-Day, June 6, 1944, he was in a replacement camp in Wales. He arrived in France on July 1st and was assigned to the 83rd Ohio Infantry Division. He spent four days on the front lines and four months in hospitals in England after being wounded on July 14, 1944.
He was returned to his unit in time to serve in the Battle of the Bulge in December of 1944. The war in Europe ended on May 8, 1945 and Leo celebrated his 21st birthday as the military commandant of a farm village in Bavaria. He was discharged on December 7, 1945, four years to the day after the U.S’s formal entry into the war.
Under the GI Bill, he enrolled in the Pennsylvania State College, earning a B.S. degree in electrical power engineering. He was a licensed professional engineer by examination and spent his professional life as an employee of Speer Carbon Company and its successor, Airco Carbon, which became a division of the BOC Group, from which he retired on October 2, 1984, after 38 years of service to the company
On June 13, 1949, in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Leo married the late Mary Grace “Sis” Straub, who preceded him in death on January 8, 1988.
Leo is survived by his daughter, Irene Hanchar (Frank) of Mahaffey, PA; two sons: Leo J. Simbeck (Linda) of St. Marys and Ira M. Simbeck (Barbara) of Kersey; eleven grandchildren; and fifteen great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife and parents, Leo was preceded in death by five sisters: Henrietta “Kunny” Roussey, Marie “Wiggy” Rezmerski, Ruth Meyer, Ethel “Boots” Barnes, and Edna Straub; three brothers: Richard “Dick” Simbeck, Robert Simbeck, and Aaron Simbeck. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated in the Queen of the World Church on Friday, June 16, 2023, at 11:00 AM, with the Rev. Paul R. Taylor, O.S.B., celebrating. Full military honors will be accorded by the St. Marys Servicemen’s Burial Detail. Burial will follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be held in the Lynch-Radkowski Funeral Home on Friday, June 16, 2023 from 9:30 AM until 10:30 AM.

Black Forest Falcons – State Champion Trap Shooters
30 Black Forest Falcon Youth Trap Shooters were among a record-setting 425 shooters at the PA Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) 100-Target Trap Championships on Saturday, 10 June in Elysburg, PA. Izayah Freeman was the top Junior Varsity Shooter in the state with a score of 99/100. The Junior Varsity squad of Caine Wright, Ethan Hamilton, Owen Gill, Izayah Freeman, and Anna Fair finished first in the Junior Varsity division with a combined score of 457/500. Also finishing first in their division, the Intermediate Beginner squad with shooters Logan Jackson, Cael DeLong, Kelby Streich, Brody Herr, and Kevin Greeley posted a combined score of 432/500. Logan Jackson, Brody Herr, and Cael DeLong finished 4th, 5th, and 6th respectively in their division.
Wish these 30 youth shooters good luck as they prepare for SCTP Nationals competition scheduled for 14 & 15 July at the Cardinal Center in Marengo, Ohio.

FAMILY FISHING TOURNAMENT IS NEXT SATURDAY, JUNE 17 AT HILLS CREEK STATE PARK
Next Saturday, June 17, between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m., the Family Fishing Tournament will be at Hills Creek Lake. The lake is in Hills Creek State Park, located about seven miles northeast of Wellsboro in Charleston Township at 111 Spillway Road, Wellsboro, PA 16901.
There is no entry fee to participate in the tournament. It’s free.
Park Naturalist Jim Mucci conducts the weigh-ins and presents the awards.
One-hour weigh-ins will be at the beach area near the shore of Hills Creek Lake from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. with the award presentation immediately following the final weigh-in.
Medallions will be presented after the 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. weigh-in to winners in five categories: largest perch, largest bluegill, largest bass, largest crappie, and largest stringer of game fish by weight (one angler’s legal limit of game fish for the day).
A one-ounce bonus will be awarded for game fish that are caught and released.
All fish must be caught by legal means. This is a no cull contest (no replacing a smaller fish with a heavier fish on the stringer).
In the event of a tie, the fish weighed the earliest will win.
Spectators are welcome to watch the fish being weighed for the tournament.

Explosions & Fire Collapse I-95 Bridge in Philadelphia

I’ve been briefed by PA Emergency Management Agency, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), and PA State Police on the I-95 fire and collapse in Philadelphia.
State Police and PEMA are on the scene assisting local first responders and PA Secretary of Transportation and his team are en route to assess the situation and address traffic needs.
Lt. Governor Austin Davis and I are closely coordinating with partners in Philadelphia, New Jersey, and the federal government and we will share more information as we have it.
For now, please avoid the area and follow the direction of the first responders on the scene.
Lois Ann “Nanner” Loree Hoffman, 93, Of Warren, PA
Lois Ann “Nanner” Loree Hoffman, 93, Of Warren, PA passed away on Saturday, June 10, 2023, in Kinzua Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center.
She was born on August 9, 1929, in Warren, PA, the daughter of the late Ralph Raymond Loree and Mary Victoria Thompson Loree. Lois graduated from Warren High School in 1947. She was a member of the former Epworth Methodist Church. Among other jobs, she was the lunch cook at the former Alleghany Hotel for 16 years.
Lois is survived by her children; one daughter, Nan Oviatt and Brian of Pittsfield, PA, and one son, Dan Hoffman and wife Erin of Warren; grandchildren, Nicole Klark, Ben Oviatt of Jamestown, NY, and Seth Taber Hoffman of Warren; great-granddaughter, Alivia Lee Hoffman of Warren; nephew, James Loree, and wife Brenda; grand nephews, Jason Loree of Warren, and Jacob Loree of Pittsburgh; and a niece, Stacy Loree of Warren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Chadwick Peterson; brother, Ralph Thompson Loree; nephew, Thomas A. Loree; two sister in laws, Rachel Blumquist Loree, and Joan Thomas; two cousins, William “Bill” Lucas, and Jean Louise Ryberg Yaegle.
Funeral services and burial will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

Gatesman takes the helm of UAHS physician practices
BRADFORD, PA – Upper Allegheny Health System (UAHS), parent company of Bradford Regional Medical Center (BRMC) and Olean General Hospital (OGH), announce the appointment of David Gatesman, MBA, RT, as the executive director of practice management. In this role, Gatesman will be responsible for the oversite of UAHS’ physician practices that employs more than 30 medical providers across multiple specialties and hundreds of physician practice employees.
Gatesman’s healthcare experience spans over 25 years in various vice president and director roles in organizations across the nation. His most recent position was at Wellspan York Hospital located in York, PA where he held the title of Director of Operations Perioperative Services and Patient Transport.
“His clinical experience in a multitude of roles as well as his leadership capabilities make David a perfect match for the needs in our physician network,” said Jill Owens, MD, president, UAHS. “Our physician recruitment efforts have been a high point over the course of the past few years. I know David is the right person for continuing the job of recruiting new providers and specialists, along with removing access barriers and improving patient experience.”
This is a homecoming of sorts for Gatesman who grew up in Bradford, graduating from Bradford Central Christian High School and even got his start in healthcare at BRMC when he attended the BRMC School of Radiography.
“It’s great to be back! I can’t wait to continue helping turn the needle in a positive direction with providing quality healthcare for our Bradford and Olean communities,” said Gatesman. “The progress made at UAHS in the last year has been impressive and is what drew me back to the area. I wanted to be a part of the progress and help to improve the healthcare experience for our patients, their families, our team members, and our providers.”
Gatesman earned his bachelor’s degree in business management from Houghton College, Houghton, NY and received his master’s degree from University of Phoenix in business administration.
Bradford Police Say Man Stole Golf Bags From Officer’s Truck in Police Parking Lot
On 06/04/2023 at approximately 0900 hours officers were alerted to a theft from a motor vehicle within the City of Bradford Police parking lot. Officers learned that two golf bags each containing multiple clubs were removed from the back of on officer’s truck parked within the parking lot. Neilly was observed and identified on video surveillance leaving the parking lot with the bags on his shoulders heading in the direction of his apartment on Boylston St.
Officers made verbal contact with Neilly at his apartment however refused to open his door to have a productive conversation. Subsequently based off of the evidence gathered, officers applied for and were granted a search warrant for the apartment in question. Officers executed the search warrant by force, once within the apartment the golf bags were observed.
Neilly ultimately resisted officers, requiring the deployment of a Taser after an extended struggle to gain control of defendant and place him in hand restraints. Neilly was arraigned by Magistrate Todd and remanded to jail on $25,000 bail.

PA Route 6 Celebrates $274k in Façade Improvements in Erie and Crawford Counties
Representatives from the PA Route 6 Alliance and its partners joined business owners and community leaders in both Erie and Crawford counties on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 30-31, to celebrate the successful culmination of the PA Route 6 Façade Program in the Great Lakes Region. The Alliance and its partners, which included Visit Erie, Visit Crawford, Preservation Erie, Crawford County Planning, and the Oil Region Alliance, gathered to recognize the 26 businesses that received program funding that resulted in over $274,000 in façade improvements throughout the two-county region.
Causer to Offer Veterans Services at Local Offices
BRADFORD – Rep. Martin Causer (R-Turtlepoint) is again offering area veterans the opportunity to work with a representative from the American Legion to ensure they get the services and support they need.
Due to changes initiated by the American Legion, appointments in the Bradford and Kane offices will be conducted virtually via a tablet.
Appointments are required for meetings with the Legion representative, whether they are in person, by phone or by tablet. The schedule is as follows:
