Doris E. Childs, 89, of County Route 5, Bolivar, NY

Doris E. Childs of County Route 5, Bolivar, NY passed away on Thursday, October 12, 2023, at the Wellsville Manor following a brief illness.

Doris was born on February 6, 1934, in Olean and was the daughter of George L. and Mae V. Hamilton Collins. On August 24, 1952, at the Portville Methodist Church she married Leon Norwood Childs who predeceased her on November 11, 2004.

Doris was a 1952 graduate of Portville Central School. She worked at Portville Central School for over 25 years where she retired as a Cafeteria Manager after 12 years in the late 1990s.

Jane McDermit Hoare, 85, St. Marys, PA

Jane McDermit Hoare, 85, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, October 12, 2023 at Elk Haven Nursing Home.

Jane was born in Cresson, PA, on May 5, 1938 to the late James and Margaret Yahner McDermit.  In 1950 her family moved to Knoxville, TN where she graduated from Knoxville Catholic High School, Class of 1956.  She then went to St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Knoxville, earning her R.N. Degree in 1959.  Her family moved back to Cresson, PA where she met and married Robert Hoare in 1960.  They were blessed to share 59 ½ years of marriage together.

Continuing the legacy of his parents’ support of Mercy Flight, Olean native and owner of All Weather Self Storage, Ron Magnano (Ronnie), presented Mercy Flight President, Margaret Ferrentino, with a check for $250,000 for our Olean Base of Operations at our recent Open House. Magnano’s parents, Louis and Patricia gave the seed money for the Olean Base hangar/heliport that opened in June of 1999. THANK YOU, Ronnie for your extreme generosity. Your gift will enable us to continue our mission of providing lifesaving air medical transport in Olean!

Austin Kids Learn About Fire Safety

Austin Volunteer Fire Department

Kids at the Austin Area School were excited to visit with the Austin Fire Department during fire prevention week. AVFD member Annette Faust taught a lesson on the importance of having a smoke detector and escape plan and how to call 911. Firefighter Andy Bothell gave a tour of the fire truck and talked about the equipment while Junior member Blake Bennett sported his fire apparel. Each student was given a goody bag in recognition of fire prevention week.

Missing Horse & Rider Found Safe

Elkland Search and Rescue

Friday evening, 10/13/23, at 10 pm, Elkland Search and Rescue and Elk Company 5 were requested by the Pa State Police Ridgway Barracks to meet them in the Thunder Mountain Equestrian Trails for a missing rider and horse.

The rider was a 55-year-old female last seen around 2:30 pm Friday at the Gas Line Camping Area. Due to the remote location of the area, most emergency responders arrived on the scene around 11:30pm.

Dog Found on Rt. 155 at SPCA

This dog was found yesterday (10/13) on Route 155 between Port Allegany and Sizerville State Park. Some good samaritans from Pittsburgh spent their day of vacation trying to find the dog’s home instead of their planned hike on this glorious Autumn day.. They didn’t succeed in finding the owners and the dog is now at the McKean County SPCA. Please share this photo and information with your readers so hopefully this wonderful dog can be reunited with his owners.

Women Invited to Join the Women’s Giving Circle at Marilyn Horne Museum

The Women’s Giving Circle of McKean County invites all area women to join them at their November 2nd annual meeting at the Marilyn Horne Museum for the awarding of over $7,000 in grants, and an enjoyable social evening. In 2022, a $2,000 grant was awarded to CASA of McKean County to recruit and train volunteers. Shown are new CASA volunteers being sworn in. Other 2022 recipients were YWCA Bradford, Destinations, Duke Center United Methodist Church Food Pantry, and Catholic Charities Counseling & Adoption Services.

Ronald E. Thompson, 79, of 73 Rutherford Run, Bradford, PA.

Ronald E. Thompson, 79, of 73 Rutherford Run, Bradford, passed away Wednesday, October 11, 2023, at UPMC Williamsport.

Ronald was born in Wellsville, NY on January 30, 1944, he was a son of the late Howard E. and Marjorie “Marge” J (Cook) Thompson. He was a 1962 graduate of Bradford Area High School, and a graduate of Williamsport Technical Institute, with a degree in Drafting.

On June 29, 1963, in West Branch Evangelical United Brethren Church, he married Gail Ann (Smith) Thompson who survives.

Ron was formerly employed at Witco Kendall and retired from Pitt Corning in Port Allegany.

He was a member of the Bradford Union Lodge 749 F&AM, the Coudersport Consistory, and loved to build things and was a jack of all trades.

Amanda Wehler, RN, third quarter Nightingale Award recipient at UAHS.

 Upper Allegheny Health System (UAHS), parent company of Bradford Regional Medical Center (BRMC) and Olean General Hospital (OGH), presented Amanda Wehler, RN, the third quarter Nightingale Award for the healthcare system. Wehler is a nurse in the inpatient acute care at BRMC, where she started in 2016.
