Thanks to the convenience of technology and our modern lifestyles, people in the U.S. are more inactive than ever. Whether we’re sitting behind desks, hunched over laptops all day for work, or lounging around binging our favorite shows, Americans simply aren’t as physically active as we used to be – and that’s a problem.
According to the American Heart Association, only about one in five adults and teens get enough exercise to maintain good health. Physical activity is one of the keys to preventing heart disease which is the number one killer of both men and women in the United States. Being more active can help all people think, feel and sleep better and perform daily tasks more easily.
When you sit for long periods of time, your body doesn’t work as well as it can and actually begins to adapt to the lack of activity in negative ways. You don’t burn as many calories as you would while standing or doing another activity, which can make it harder to stay at a healthy weight.
Science has linked being inactive and sitting too much with higher risk of heart disease. Your heart is a muscle, just like the ones in your arms and legs. The more you use it, the stronger and more efficient it becomes. When you’re active, your blood pumps through your arteries, helping to keep them healthy and functioning well. Regular cardiovascular exercise, the kind that raises your heart rate and makes you breathe heavily, helps improve your quality of life while reducing many of your risks for heart disease. It can:
Families Score at Rolfe Beagle Club’s Statewide Coyote and Fox Hunt or Trap
Johnsonburg, Pa.: Two families hunted together last weekend for Rolfe Beagle Club’s Statewide Coyote and Fox Hunt or Trap, and did well. John Dellaquila and his son Isaac hunted private lands in Elk and Cameron Counties, and were able to harvest predators on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
John started off Friday morning at 12:50 a.m. with a 36.0# male coyote from Cameron County, harvested with a .243. John and his son Isaac then moved to Elk County and Isaac was able to harvest a 13.0# male red fox at 4:00 a.m. on private lands, also using a .243. On Saturday, John and Isaac set up on some fields on private lands in Elk County and scanned the fields – no calling. John harvested a 31.8# female coyote at 10:00 p.m., and Isaac harvested a 37.6# male coyote at 4:15 a.m.
On Sunday, they set up again on fields on private lands in Elk County and after scanning the fields all evening, John finally connected on the largest coyote for the weekend, a 44.4# male harvested at 6:30 a.m…. a long night. Congratulations, Dellaquila Family!
Team “Big Dog” composed of Rich and Nate Hoffman out of St. Marys also made it a family affair over the weekend. Rich and Nate both shoot a .22-250 and hunt private lands in Elk County. Rich harvested a 33.8# male coyote at 1:30 a.m. on Friday, and Nate harvested a 35.8# male coyote on Friday at 5:45 a.m. Team “Big Dog” uses both electronic and mouth calls. Greta E. Edminster, 61, of North Branch Rd, Eldred, PA
Greta E. Edminster, 61, of North Branch Rd, Eldred, PA passed away Tuesday, February 13, 2024, at the Snyder Memorial Health Care Center.
Born May 3, 1962 in Olean, NY, she is daughter to Howard F. Sr and Greta (Ault) Yeaples. She is a 1980 graduate of Otto-Eldred Jr-Sr High School.
On June 26, 1982, in Rixford, PA, she married Jeffrey R. Edminster, who survives.
Greta retired from Otto-Eldred Jr-Sr High School, where she worked as a custodian for about 18 years. Her previous employment includes several years at Duke Center Superette and a short time at Temple Particleboard Plant.
Sara G. “Sally” Richardson, 100, formerly of Olean, Eldred, Pa , East Aurora NY and Holley, NY

North Tonawanda-Sara G. “Sally” Richardson, formerly of Olean, Eldred, Pa , East Aurora NY and Holley, NY passed away Wednesday (February 14, 2024) at the DeGraff Long term Care Facility in N. Tonawanda, NY.
Sara was born in Eldred, Pa on March 10, 1923. She was the daughter of the late Oscar and Lillian Brown Carpenter and sister to the late Gerald Carpenter and the late Myrl Reed.
Sara graduated from Otto/Eldred High School and the Westbrook Academy in Olean.
She married Morris E. Richardson, Jr whose family owned Richardsons Grocery on N.13th and W State St. He predeceased her in 1996. When Morris left for the south Pacific, Sara worked at Ft. Monmouth, NJ for the three years he served. Sally was the leader of the steno pool at the Developmental Laboratory there. She was a Church Secretary for many years at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in East Aurora. After her husband’s retirement from Moog in E Aurora and returning to Olean, Morris became active in the family business before it was sold. They then moved to Holley NY where she was a member of the Concordia Lutheran Church in Brockport.
George KERTIS, Jr., 76, of Coudersport, PA, formerly of Ulysses, PA
Born February 25, 1947, in New York City, NY, he was the son of George and Anna Vrabel Kertis. On March 21, 1987, in Richboro, he married the former Valerie J. Thiers, who predeceased him on January 13, 2014. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a sister, Veronica.

EMS Task Force Meets To Keep Ambulances Running in Cameron, McKean & Potter

The EMS Task Force met last evening to continue our ongoing conversation about how to help our ambulance companies keep running despite growing financial and staffing challenges.
While a recent state law significantly increased the Medicaid reimbursement rate for mileage and services, the group talked about the need for local municipalities to do more to support the cost of readiness – the cost of having an equipped ambulance and crew ready to respond at a moment’s notice.
We also talked about training and staffing, and how to better ensure people who complete EMS training follow through by taking the national certification exam and then put what they have learned into practice.
I want to thank the more than three dozen people who took the time to participate in the meeting and extend a special thanks to Anthony Martin, recently appointed director of the Bureau of EMS within the Pennsylvania Department of Health, and Tom McElree, executive director of EMS West. I am equally grateful to our county emergency services directors – Marty Kim in Cameron, Nathan Burgett in McKean and Glenn Dunn in Potter – for sharing county-specific statistics about their call volumes.
Our next step is to form small groups in each county to work toward solutions to the unique problems they face. If you are interested in participating, please contact my Bradford office at 814-362-4400.

BIG BUBBLE BONANZA COMING TO PITT-BRADFORD
BRADFORD, Pa. – The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford will host Jeff Boyer’s Big Bubble Bonanza at 7 p.m. Feb. 27 in the Bromeley Family Theater of Blaisdell Hall.
The Bubble Bonanza, presented by Pitt-Bradford Arts, will feature bubble rainbows with people inside, audience members making volcano bubbles and gigantic bubbles that blow their own bubbles.
Big Bubble Bonanza is the latest comedy bubble show from Jeff Boyer, who has been performing for 25 years. The show blends comedy, music and interactive bubble-magic for a sensory-friendly bubble extravaganza for the whole family.
