Bradford Area Public Library Programs Announced

Bradford, PA—Spring is in the air and the Bradford Area Public Library is ready to celebrate the season by offering an Introduction to Garden Design workshop on Monday, April 15 at 6PM. This is a free program for all area residents that will be presented by Kari Compton, owner of Compton Florals; a locally owned business that offers seasonal flower arrangements made solely with materials grown right here in McKean County!
Compton has offered a four-week Garden Design course in the recent past but is currently able to offer a condensed version for BAPL’s adult programming. This free workshop will cover seven important steps to consider when creating an outdoor space that residents and their families will treasure. “Whether it’s a vegetable garden, a space to relax, a fun outdoor area for the kids, low-maintenance landscaping, or a beautiful flower border, I believe everyone can design a garden space they will truly enjoy and use… they just need the information and tools to do it!” states Compton.

There will be a Q & A session, so attendees are encouraged to bring their gardening questions, and Compton will do her best to assist everyone with their plant and design challenges!
Next, on the library’s programming calendar, is an Author Talk with local author Denise Seagren on Thursday, April 18 at 6:30 PM. Seagren’s book, Soldiers of the Forest: A Story of the Civilian Conservation Corps was released in November 2023. While her book is a work of historical fiction, readers will gain more knowledge about the Civilian Conservation Corps, Chief Cornplanter, and stories of hidden Civil War treasure.
Seagren’s discussion will include a PowerPoint presentation that will walk attendees through the history of the Civilian Conservation Corps, local history, as well as detail Denise’s research and corresponding documentation that she unearthed while writing her book. Come join the discussion. No registration is required for either program.

ANTLERLESS DEER LICENSES GUARANTEED TO MOST HUNTERS

When 2024-25 antlerless deer licenses go on sale alongside general hunting licenses in late June, far fewer people will be waiting in line.
And for most hunters, there won’t be a need.
The Pennsylvania Game Commission has modified the antlerless deer license sales schedule, and additionally is guaranteeing most resident hunters will get an antlerless license in the Wildlife Management Unit of their choice, as long as they do so before sales to nonresidents begin.
Here’s how it will work.

ELDRED WOMAN SENTENCED FOR HINDERING APPREHENSION OF A FUGITIVE AND DRUG DELIVERY

(MCKEAN COUNTY, Pennsylvania: April 12, 2024): District Attorney Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer reports that the woman charged with harboring a man wanted for failing to appear at his trial and selling methamphetamine has pled guilty in the case during a plea hearing at the McKean County Courthouse on April 12th.
Sarah Waid, of Eldred, pled guilty to Delivery of a Controlled Substance (methamphetamine) (Felony); Possession with Intent to Deliver (methamphetamine) (Felony): Hindering Apprehension (Felony 3) and Criminal Use of a Communication Facility (Felony 3).
Her co-defendant, Timothy Bottorf, was convicted at trial last month and was sentenced to 8 years to 16 years. Waid was scheduled for jury trial on Monday, April 15th. Bottorf was scheduled to appear for jury trial in April 2023, and he failed to appear. A bench warrant was issued for his arrest. On May 7, 2023, Pennsylvania State Police stopped a vehicle and the driver was found to possess methamphetamine. He advised Troopers he had just purchased the drugs from Waid, and her boyfriend, Bottorf, was hiding in their residence in Eldred. The driver knew Bottorf was wanted by authorities.
McKean County Drug Task Force Detective Michael Ward began an investigation into the case and set up surveillance by other officers of the residence of Waid and Bottorf on Main Street in Eldred. Communication between the driver – now informant – and Waid were observed on the driver’s cell phone. During a controlled buy, Waid sold methamphetamine to the informant who then confirmed that Bottorf was still within the residence.
While numerous officers maintained surveillance of the residence, a search warrant was approved by a Judge. Numerous members of the McKean County Drug Task Force and K9s Duke and Rigby entered the residence. After several minutes, Waid was located under the bed while Bottorf was located hiding in a closet. Additional methamphetamine were located in the home.
Waid was sentenced immediately to 2 ½ years to 5 years, drug and alcohol treatment, lab user fees, and other terms.
