Cheryl L. “Bean” Rodgers, 74, of Smethport
Smethport – Cheryl L. “Bean” Rodgers, 74, of Smethport, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday (February 5, 2025) at her home in Smethport.
She was born August 1, 1950 in Port Allegany, the daughter of Alfred and Artie (Bells) Cochran. On April 15, 1967, in Coryville, PA, she married Clyde E. Rodgers, who died January 1, 2017.
Bean attended Smethport Area High School and worked at the Bradford Chocolate Factory in Bradford.
She was a life member of the VFW Post #2497 of Smethport. She loved baking, boating, and spending time with her family.
PUC to Investigate Pike County Light & Power’s Request to Increase Electric Distribution Rates
HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) has voted to suspend and investigate a proposed rate increase by Pike County Light & Power (PCL&P) for electric distribution service in portions of Pike County.
Star Awards Announced for February at BRMC, OGH

Kim Murphey, administrative assistant, BRMC, has been honored as the February BRMC Star Award winner. Kim has been with BRMC since 2021, but employed by the hospital system since 2014.
Closure of a Bridge on County Road 36 in the Town of Centerville
Please be advised Allegany County Road 36 from W. Washburn Road to Pochuck Road (near the north Allegany County line) will be closed starting Monday, February 10, to replace the bridge on CR 36. James A. Rickard, Jr., 73, of Dewey Circle, passed away Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at his residence following a lengthy illness.
He was born on August 12, 1951, in Ridgway, the son of the late James A. Rickard, Sr., and Shirley Wilson McCoy.
On October 4, 2019, he married Wendy Shefcyk, who survives.
Bizzak Brings First Predator to Rolfe Beagle Club’s Statewide Coyote and Fox Hunt or Trap
Johnsonburg, Pa.: Josh Bizzak of Wilcox brought in a beautiful gray fox as the first predator harvested for Rolfe Beagle Club’s Statewide Coyote and Fox Hunt or Trap. “It was so bitter cold last night; I went to two different places and the wind was blowing so hard, I got right back in the truck. Then I went to a field I haven’t been to in a couple of years, and at my second stand, the fox came in within two minutes.”

Twin brothers, Payton and Preston Yeager, were the latest senior visitors to Rotary. They are the sons of Kassie Proctor and Stacy Yeager. They have a younger brother, Parker.
Payton was introduced by Patricia Kujawski. He played football, won the D-9 Championship, is a member of the Varsity Club and worked for the Port Allegany Borough in the summer. His future plans are to possibly work for the borough of Port Allegany, or work in the factory. He also may go to a trade school to become an electrical engineer.
Preston was introduced by Ki Bayline. He was a member of the football teams in grades 7 and 8 and takes woodshop classes. His summer job has been mowing lawns. His future plans are to get a job at the factory.

Anna M. Mosier, 70, of Irishtown Road, Kersey, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, February 6, 2025.
She was born on August 29, 1954 in Ridgway, a daughter of the late Joseph and Helen Yando Predko.
She was married to the late Michael Mosier, who preceded her in death.

Edith M. “Edie” COYNE, 75, of Wellsville, NY, formerly of Amherst, died Wednesday, February 5, 2025 in Jones Memorial Hospital.
Born February 15, 1949, in Wellsville, she was the daughter of James and Alice Brewer Davis. In 1972, in Monroe County, she married Martin C. Coyne, who predeceased her on April 24, 2015. A graduate of Scio High School, she also attended BOCES for Secretarial Science. Edie was employed by North American Van Lines in Buffalo as a dispatcher.
Students Representing Port Allegany High School At Tri-State Festival
Kaydance Beaver – clarinet, Jonah McKeirnan – clarinet, Kendra Meade – clarinet, Alayna Palmer – trumpet, Delaney Stromberg – tuba, and Trace Kazimer – percussion represented Port Allegany at the Tri-State Band Festival at Mercyhurst University February 6-8, 2025. The students audition for chair placement and then work with a guest conductor in preparation for a public concert on Saturday afternoon. Dr. Scott Meier of Mercyhurst is the host with assistance from the music majors of the university.

Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office Welcomes New K-9 Lex To The Force
Cattaraugus County Sheriff Eric Butler along with the Seneca Nation of Indians President J.C. Seneca announce the deputizing of our newest road patrol canine, Lex. In December 2024 the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office partnered with the Seneca Nation in support of a new K-9 unit to patrol our communities. Lex a 1 ½ year old German Shepard, started training with her handler, Deputy Justin Grimm in December 2024. This past week the K-9 team hit the streets to begin their career patrolling the County.
Lex is a dual-purpose patrol dog trained and certified in Narcotics detection, tracking, article searches, and suspect apprehension. Sheriff Butler and Deputy Grimm agreed to name Lex after our former Senior Emergency Services Dispatcher Timothy Lexer who tragically passed away in July of 2024. Deputy Grimm and K-9 Lex are honored to carry on the legacy of such a great man and co-worker. The Sheriff would like to thank the Seneca Nation of Indians for their generous donation to help fund the new K-9 team, the Forestville Animal Hospital for veterinarian services, Purina for the dog food, and an anonymous donor who provided a housing enclosure for K-9 Lex.
Amherst, NY Man Arrested For Multiple Felony Child Exploitation Charges
On January 31, 2025, the SP Clarence Bureau of Criminal Investigation and NYSP Computer Crimes Unit assisted a Police Department in Virginia with the arrest of arrested Geoffrey J. Testa, 45 of Amherst, NY on a warrant arrest for multiple Felony Child Exploitation charges out of Fairfax.
Testa was processed and taken to Erie County Holding Center on the arrest warrant awaiting extradition.
Testa is currently a teacher at Amherst Central School. The NYSP are working with the School administration with this incident.

North Country Voices begin Choral Rehearsals
The North Country Voices is a community chorus located in Coudersport, PA. and includes singers from the surrounding area. We are inviting additional members to join. The group is comprised of soprano, alto, tenor and bass voices and it performs both sacred and secular music. Our next scheduled program is the Spring Concert May 4, 2025. Rehearsals are held every Thursday evening from 6:00-8:00pm at Christ Episcopal church in Coudersport.
This is a well-established choral group with experienced singers at its core. If you enjoy singing, you can make a commitment to attending rehearsals and wish to share a music experience with dedicated musicians who work toward a polished performance, you are invited to join. Reading music is helpful but not a requirement. Rehearsal soundtracks are made available to help each person learn their voice part.

Robert Lloyd Leslie, 98, Of Bradford, PA
Robert Lloyd Leslie of Bradford passed away peacefully on January 27, 2025 at the age of 98 years. Born in Ebensburg he was the son of the late Mary Rivinius Leslie and John Leon Leslie. Ebensburg is the county seat of Cambria County which was established in 1796 by his predecessors, the Rees Lloyd family.
Robert was raised in Brooklyn, NY and graduated in three years from New York University. While in New York, he met the love of his life, Eleanor Ruppman Leslie, and they married in 1950 in Englewood, NJ. They were an extremely devoted couple and perfect role models for their family. On August 26, 2020, the couple celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Eleanor passed away on October 18, 2020.
Robert, Eleanor, and their daughter Alison moved to Bradford in 1960 when Robert accepted a position with Allegheny Electronics Chemical Company. Several years later he was a co-founder of Allegheny Bradford Corporation. The Corporation is located in Lewis Run, employs over 200 individuals, and is recognized world-wide as a leader in providing stainless steel solutions to multiple industries including pharmaceutical, biotechnology, food and beverage, chemical, electronic processing, and others. Due to his enjoyment of his occupation and his strong work ethic, Robert remained on the Corporation’s Board of Directors until his passing.
Robert was extremely proud of serving his county in WWII. While studying at New York University, he joined the United States Army Air Corp, the aerial warfare service component of the United States Army at that time. After serving in the active military he joined the United States Army Reserves and retired after reaching the rank of Major.

SHINGLEHOUSE, PA—Michael J. “Mike” Knapp, 67, of Shinglehouse, passed away with his loving family by his side on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, after a long illness.
Born on Friday, February 15, 1957 in Olean, NY, he was a son of Kenneth W. and Helen M. Loughrey Knapp. On August 14, 1976 in Ceres, he married Valarie E. Howard, who survives.
Mike was a graduate of Bolivar (NY) High School. While in high school, he was in the BOCES program for food service. In his earlier years, he worked at restaurants in Olean, NY and Buffalo, NY as a chef. He was employed for many years at the former Stroehmann Bakeries in Olean, retiring in 2005 due to ill health.
Mike was an avid fisherman before he had to retire from Stroehmann’s. He also liked to read and enjoyed his time showing rabbits with Casey. He was a member of the American Rabbit Breeders Association and the National Federation of Flemish Giant Rabbit Breeders who awarded him the Master Breeder Award in 2018, an award he was very proud of.

Dennis Jay Furman, 63, of Austin, passed away unexpectedly at work in Summit Township on Tuesday, February 4, 2025.
Born on Thursday, October 26, 1961 in Coudersport, he was a son of Edwin A. Furman and Doris A. Bunnell Furman Robison. On September 3, 2000, he married Cheryl M. Ayers, who survives.
Dennis was a graduate of Coudersport High School and graduated as salutatorian from Golf Academy of South Carolina in Myrtle Beach. Dennis was a veteran of the US Navy, having served from 1980 to 1986.
At the time of his death, Dennis was a Summit Township Supervisor. Dennis had previously been employed by UPMC Cole in Coudersport.
Roy C. Amidon, 81, of Oswayo, PA

OSWAYO, PA—Roy C. Amidon, 81, of Oswayo, passed away on Wednesday, February 5, 2025, in UPMC Cole, Coudersport, after a brief illness.
Born on Monday, May 31, 1943 in Shinglehouse, he was a son of Leon and Kathryn Amidon. On February 15, 1969 in Olean, NY, he married Sandra J. “Sandie” Holmberg, who survives.
Roy attended school in both Oswayo and Shinglehouse. He was employed for 30 years as a truck driver for PennDOT in Coneville. In his younger years, he was a stone cutter in a stone quarry. After retirement, he worked with his son, Richard, taking care of many cemeteries throughout the area. In his teenage years, he was a pin setter at the bowling alley in Shinglehouse where he earned ten cents a game setting the pins. In his early 20’s he worked in Maine as an x-ray assistant on the submarine, the USS Thresher.

SHINGLEHOUSE, PA—Penelope Jo “Pen” Yunghans, 78, beloved friend, sister, mother, grandmother, passed away on January 30, 2025 at her home in Shinglehouse, PA. Born in 1946 in Brockport, NY, she was the daughter of F. Laverne and Hilda (Heath) Dietter.
Pen attended Holley High School in Holley, NY and then graduated from Heidelberg University with a degree in Religious Education and Purdue University with a Master’s degree in Sociology. Pen was employed as a bank teller in college both in Frederick, MD and Lafayette, IN, a children’s librarian at Barker Library in Fredonia, NY and volunteered at Oswayo Valley Memorial Library in Shinglehouse. She also worked as a mobile therapist in Potter County, PA and as a counselor in the Wellsville, NY school district. Her life was always dedicated to serving and improving the lives of every community of which she was a part.
Miss Holmes Returns to Wellsboro Feb. 14
Hamilton-Gibson Productions will present Miss Holmes Returns by Christopher M. Walsh on February 14, 15, 21, and 22 at 7:30pm and February 23 at 2:30 pm at the Warehouse Theatre in Wellsboro. This is the sequel to Miss Holmes, which HG performed to acclaim in 2019 and features the original cast returning to the roles of Sherlock, Watson, Mycroft, Lestrade, and Mrs. Hudson. The play opens on Valentine’s Day, when a special Valentine’s Gimlet cocktail will be available for purchase and can be brought into the theater.
