Mary (Wood) Wetmore, age 94, of Knoxville, PA
Mary (Wood) Wetmore, age 94, of Knoxville, PA, passed away on July 15, 2024 at Broad Acres in Wellsboro, PA. Born on August 4, 1929, she was the daughter of Russell and Ruth Edgcomb Wood.
She graduated from Knoxville High School in 1947. She helped her father and brothers on their family farm and in farm-related business. In 1953 she married Joseph Ferris Wetmore and they bought a farm of their own near Knoxville, operating a dairy first and later raising beef cattle until he passed away in 1990.
She is survived by her son, Duane (Carol) Wetmore of Middlebury Center, PA, daughters Onolee (Robert) Thomas, Christine (Chuck) VanZile, and Ellen (James Craig) Williams, all of Knoxville, PA. She is survived by eight grandchildren, Faith (Pete) Olver, Caleb (Rachel) Wetmore, Ruth (Derek) Good, MeeCee Kroeck (Glenn Knott), Michelle (Matt) Watkins, Marlo (Aaron) Carl, Lydia Morton, and Benjamin Williams, step-grandchildren, Christopher (Eden)Thomas, Stephanie (Michael) Price, Kaleigh Thomas, Monica (Rich) Francis, Nate (Danielle) VanZile, Misty (Doug) Newcomb, Jessica (Jason) Dilly, She is also survived by 34 great-grandchildren, and numerous great-great-grandchildren. Her brother Waldo (Esther) Wood, also survives. In addition to her husband, she was preceded by siblings Naoma Wood Leathers, Eleanor Wood Cobb, and John R. Wood.
Mary enjoyed camping and gardening each summer, and since her childhood she raised a productive vegetable garden each year, sharing her harvest with friends and family. In the winter she enjoyed deer hunting with her family, and writing nature stories some of which she published. She was active in church events, Grange, 4-H during her children’s growing-up years, and hiked with the Susquehannock Trail Club in her later years. She was a member of Jemison Valley Brethren-in-Christ Church.
Friends and family may visit at Butler Hill Baptist Church, Knoxville, PA, on Saturday, July 27 from 10 AM -12 PM, with a memorial service to follow at 12 PM with Reverend William O’Neil officiating. Memorial donations may be made to Butler Hill Baptist Church or Jemison Valley Brethren in Christ Church, Westfield, PA.
