Laine, Tarana recognized for philanthropic achievement in the southern tier
Two outstanding members of the local community, Marianne Laine and Blake Tarana, were celebrated for their philanthropic contributions at the National Philanthropy Day luncheon in Buffalo on November 14th. The event, hosted by the Association of Fundraising Professionals of Western New York (AFP of WNY), recognized individuals and organizations making a profound impact across Western New York. St. Bonaventure University and Olean General Hospital, a Kaleida Health facility, jointly nominated both Laine and Tarana, showcasing their dedication to bettering the community.
“As a committee member for National Philanthropy Day of Western New York, it was a privilege to work with the Olean General Hospital Foundation to nominate and share two stories of generosity and dedication in the southern tier,” said Melissa DeRose, major gifts officer, St. Bonaventure University. “The afternoon celebrated Marianne and Blake and their immeasurable impact; a testament to their unwavering commitment to our area.”
Marianne Laine, recognized as a distinguished honoree, represents a legacy of giving deeply woven into the fabric of the Olean community. Alongside her late husband, Erick, Laine has been a steadfast supporter of numerous initiatives that have touched countless lives. Her philanthropy has strengthened both St. Bonaventure University and Olean General Hospital, helping these institutions thrive and serve the region.
Blake Tarana, owner of the Southern Tier Tim Hortons franchises, was named the Outstanding Philanthropic Corporation Honoree at the luncheon. His innovative approach to blending business success with community outreach has created a ripple effect of positive change. Under his leadership, Tim Hortons has become a driving force for local causes, supporting programs in both institutions.
“Blake’s ability to transform coffee into a tool for community building is both inspiring and humbling,” said Steve Jackson, president, Olean General Hospital Foundation. “This recognition is a well-deserved acknowledgment of his vision and the incredible work he and his team do every day. His commitment to cancer care and women’s health as well as the students and athletes at St. Bonaventure University, his alma mater, is remarkable.”
The luncheon served as a reminder of the power of collaboration. Representatives from St. Bonaventure University and Olean General Hospital emphasized the importance of partnerships in amplifying the impact of philanthropy. The institutions have similar goals and continue to grow partnerships, specifically, with the DePerro School of Health Professions. “Together, we desire to demonstrate how working hand-in-hand strengthens the entire community,” said DeRose and Jackson.
“We are truly fortunate to have such remarkable individuals in our area,” said Dr. Muhammed Javed, chairman, UAHS Board of Directors and medical director for the DePerro School of Health Professions. “Their generosity inspires us all to work harder, dream bigger, and make our communities brighter and stronger.”
The National Philanthropy Day Luncheon celebrated not just the honorees but also the spirit of giving that unites and uplifts Western New York. Congratulations to Marianne Laine and Blake Tarana for their well-earned recognition and for reminding us all of the transformative power of generosity.
