Joyce Youmans Peterson, 93 of Wellsboro, PA died Tuesday, November 5, 2024 at home. Born May 17, 1931 in Covington, she was the daughter of F. Kenneth and Celia Youmans. On February 13, 1948, in Wellsboro she married Neuman J Peterson. She was a 1948 graduate of the Wellsboro High School.

Joyce was a member of St Paul’s Episcopal Church in Wellsboro where she was the choir director for 35 years. She was a member of St Mary’s Episcopal Church in Bonita Springs FL where she sang in the choir and was a member of the Cursillo group.

Joyce’s passion was the arts. She performed in several musicals at Mansfield University under the direction of Jack Wilcox. She was a member of the Wednesday Morning Musicales, Wellsboro Women’s’ Chorus and several barbershop quartets. She participated in acting up and acting out with Hamilton-Gibson, the towns Red Garter Reviews, the Wellsboro Town Band, Dickens of a Christmas and choreographed or directed several of the high school musicals.

Joyce was the manager of Lifeline for 10 years at the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hospital and  volunteered for many years in the emergency room.

Joyce was a member of the Tyoga Country Club and enjoyed playing golf, watching golf on TV and working the Corning LPGA Classic.

She was a member of the bowling league and participated in bantam bowling, teaching over 1200 grade school children how to bowl.

She interviewed the Laurel Festival queens court and traveled with Miss Laurel Festival around the state of Pennsylvania.

She produced advertising for Notware’s “first for fashion in Wellsboro”.

Joyce was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

She was a devout Christian who’s daily prayer list included every family member by first and middle name as well as the many others who needed prayer.

Surviving are two sons, Thomas (Anita) Peterson of Wellsboro; Kent (Dorothy) Peterson of Hoschton, GA; daughter, LuAnn (Francis) Hetherington of Harrisburg; five grandchildren, Christopher (Jennifer) Peterson, Laura (DJ) Bledsoe, Erin (Autumn) Peterson, R. Joseph Peterson (Kristen Likel), Evelyn (Jeffrey) Lambert; five step grandchildren, William Humble, Christopher Humble, Frank (Carly) Hetherington, Brian Hetherington, Jonathan (Maria) Hetherington, 29 great grandchildren and 4 great great grandchildren, one sister-in-law Mary Peterson of Wellsboro and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents F. Kenneth and Celia Youmans; husband, Neuman J Peterson; one brother, Edward Youmans; one sister, Doris Brigham; 2 brothers-in-law, John Brigham and Jerome Peterson; one nephew, Michael Peterson; one niece, Bonnie Phillips and one great grandchild, Christian Lambert.

Friends are invited to attend Joyce’s life celebration on Thursday, November 14, 2024 from 6:00-8:00 PM at the Tussey-Mosher Funeral Home, 139 Main St, Wellsboro. Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 15, 2024 at 11:00 AM at St Paul’s Episcopal Church, Wellsboro with the Rev. Lauri Kerr, officiating. Burial will be in the Wellsboro Cemetery.
