Joseph A. “Joe” “Patsy” Scida, 99, of Powers Avenue, Johnsonburg, passed away Sunday evening, August 4, 2024, at Elk Haven Nursing Home, St. Marys, following a lengthy illness.
He was born in Johnsonburg on January 1, 1925, a son to the late Vincenzo “Jim” and Adeline Papa Scida. On August 7, 1946, in Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg, he married Kathleen M. “Kay” Hocking, and she survives.
A lifelong resident of Johnsonburg, Joe was a 1943 graduate of Johnsonburg High School, a member of Holy Rosary Church, VFW, American Legion post 501 and had been a past member of East End Hose Co. and the Prince of Piedmont Club. He loved spending time with is family and grandchildren, tending to his gardens, fishing, canning and enjoying his wine and Italian meats.
Joe was a WWII Navy Vet serving as a LCVP driver at Omaha Beach, transporting soldiers from the 1st Infantry Division of the Us Army or “The Big Red One”, making multiple trips from the LST ship to shore before he was wounded aboard his boat. After he was wounded, healed and rehabilitated, he remained in the Navy in the European Theater until his discharge in 1946.
Joe was the manager of Patsy’s store in Johnsonburg for over 30 years and had worked for the Elk County Housing Authority for 17 years until his retirement in 2003.
Joe is survived by his wife at home, sons Jim Scida (Christina), Rick Scida (Lynn) and Tom Scida (Luck) all of Johnsonburg and a daughter Ann Scida of Kansas City, MO.
He is also survived by his grandchildren Amy Wesley (Dale), Joe Scida (Meia), Elise Grossa (Tom), Noah Scida, Philip Scida (Lexi), Becky Swentosky (Dominic), Elaine Scida, Colleen Oknefski, Travis Scida (Dani) and Taylor Jacob (Joe) and 14 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Joe is predeceased by a brother James in infancy and sisters Rose Marie Grumley and Florence King.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Joseph J. “Joe” “Patsy” Scida” will be conducted at Holy Rosary Church, Johnsonburg on Thursday August 8, 2024, at 10 AM with Fr. David Wilson, Pastor as celebrant. Interment will be in Holy Rosary Cemetery.
Friends will be received at the Anthony F. Ferragine Funeral Home and Cremation Services Chapel, 401 Chestnut Street, Johnsonburg on Wednesday evening from 5 to 8 PM.
Military Honors will be accorded by the Johnsonburg-Ridgway-Wilcox Servicemen’s Detail. Detail members are asked to assemble at the funeral home Thursday morning at 9:15 AM.
