Jay F. Reed, 79, of Daguscahonda, passed away on Tuesday, December 24, 2024, at his home with his family by his side following a brief illness.
He was born on December 25, 1944 in DuBois, PA, a son of the late Melvin and Viola Beck Reed.
On April 24, 1965, at St. Benedict Church in Daguscahonda, he married the love of his life, Mary Schneider Reed, who survives. Together they were blessed with nearly 60 years of love, laughter, and marriage.
Jay was a member of St. Leo Magnus Church and was a graduate of St. Marys Area High School, class of 1962. He served in the U.S. Army Reserves for 8 years. He continued his education to become a barber, and owned and operated Jay Reed Barber Shop for more than 50 years. He loved visiting with his customers, and was affectionately known as “Speedy Reed”, always giving a quick haircut to his beloved customers. When he wasn’t hunting or fishing, he was spending time in his garden or canning the harvests of his garden. He loved to cook, and always enjoyed cooking for his family and friends. An avid Steelers fan, Jay could often be found watching the games with his faithful and beloved dog, Jeep.
In addition to his wife Mary, he is survived by one daughter; Renee Reed of Daguscahonda; and by his 4 beloved grandchildren; Kyle (Berlin Tannehill) Reed, John Darnell, Shaina (Andrew Robuck) Darnell, and Madison (Christian) Steffan, and by his four great-grandchildren; Judea, Sophia, Jayce and Vincent. He is also survived by two sisters; Joyce Simon of St. Marys and Connie Dunn of Kennedy, NY, and by numerous nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
In addition to his parents, Jay was preceded in death by two brothers; Dale Reed and Francis Reed, a great-grandson; Hunter Reed, and by a niece; Sherry Simon.
A Mass of Christian Burial for Jay F. Reed will be celebrated on Saturday, January 4, 2025 at 11:00 AM at St. Leo Magnus Church, 111 Depot Street, Ridgway, PA 15853 with The Very Rev. Justin Pino, V.F., Pastor, as celebrant.
Family and Friends will be received at St. Leo Magnus Church on Saturday, January 4, 2025 from 10:00 AM till the time of the Mass.
Burial will be at a later date at Parklawn Memorial Gardens.
