HAMILTON-GIBSON TREBLE CHOIR & CHOIR, TOO TO PRESENT AUTUMN CHORAL CONCERT NEXT SUNDAY, OCT. 1
The Hamilton-Gibson Treble Choir is offering a delightful afternoon of music at 2:30 p.m. next Sunday, Oct. 1 in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on the corner of Pearl and Charles Streets, across from The Green in Wellsboro. The choir consists of singers in grades 5-8 from all over Tioga County.
The Autumn Choral Concert will feature guest soloist Carter Route, who is majoring in music at Mansfield University. He wowed audiences with his dynamic performance as the title character in MU’s “Phantom of the Opera” this past spring. Route will also be the tenor soloist in the “Messiah: Community Sing” on Sunday, Dec. 10.
At the Oct. 1 concert, Route will join with the HG Treble Choir for “Close Every Door” and “Any Dream Will Do”, two songs from the musical “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.” He will also join them in singing for “Gloria Tibi” from Leonard Bernstein’s “Mass.”
The HG Treble Choir will sing “A Place in the Choir,” a rousing, fun song made famous by the popular group Celtic Thunder and “Hold Fast to Dreams,” a new setting of poet Langston Hughes’ words: “Hold fast to dreams For if dreams die Life is a broken-winged bird That cannot fly.”
One of the themes the choir is exploring this year is “Water,” with songs such as “Afton Water,” a melodic Scottish folk song with words by Robert Burns and “Bring Me Little Water, Silvy,” attributed to Huddie Ledbetter (Leadbelly) and accompanied by local musician Anne Acker on upright bass.
The concert will also feature HG Choir Too, the training choir for singers in grades 2-4. They will join the Treble Choir for two songs and also sing the haunting “Manx Lullaby.”
Thomas W. Putnam, HG Productions artistic director, is the director of the HG Treble Choir. HG Choir Too is directed by Cheryl Hein Walters. Gary Citro is the accompanist for both choirs.
Admission at the door is $10 for adults and $5 for children 18 and younger. The concert is sponsored by C&N.
The HG Choral Program is open to boys and girls in grades 2-8, with rehearsals on Tuesdays at 4 p.m. Participation requirements include a love of singing, and a commitment for the school year season. It is free due to generous donations by community members.
Families whose children are considering joining the choirs will be admitted to this concert free. For more information about the concert or joining the choral program, email hamgib@gmail.com or call 570-724-2079.
