ELDRED MAN CONVICTED OF AGGRAVATED ASSAULT
(MCKEAN COUNTY, Pennsylvania; January 18, 2024): District Attorney Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer reports that, following a two-day jury trial at the McKean County Courthouse, Andrew Baker, of Eldred, was convicted of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Strangulation, Simple Assault and harassment.
He was found not guilty of an additional count of simple assault and terroristic threats. Testimony at the trial included that of a man and woman from Eldred who testified that Baker had been in a romantic relationship with the woman at the time of the crime. On June 17, 2023, he came to the woman’s house and assaulted the man with a glass device by smashing the device over the man’s head, causing it to shatter. Baker then put the man in a chokehold until he fell unconscious. After the man came to, he realized he was bleeding profusely from his back and realized that the defendant had stabbed him with a shard of glass that was on the floor from the glass device that had shattered.
The man was able to call 911 and escaped the residence to a nearby parking lot where he was met by EMTs. He was taken to BRMC and treated for his injuries which included 4 lacerations to his head from being hit with the glass device and a gaping wound to his back.
Troopers with the Pennsylvania State Police were dispatched and met with the male victim while he was treated by EMS. They then proceeded to the residence where the assault occurred and found the female hiding inside the garage. Troopers observed fresh blood and shards of glass throughout the bedroom.
Baker was charged with the crimes by Trooper Kyle Morton of the Pennsylvania State Police-Lewis Run. District Attorney Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer prosecuted the case on behalf of the Commonwealth. Baker will be sentenced on February 29th.
