CASEWORKER 1 VACANCY

Cameron County Children and Youth Services has an opening for a full-time County Caseworker position. Caseworkers provide a range of case management services to children and families to ensure the safety and well-being of children.

Salary: $37,000 (with a $2,000 increase upon completion of training and promotion to Caseworker 2)

Requirements:

A bachelor’s degree which includes, or is supplemented by 12 college credits in sociology, social welfare, psychology, gerontology, criminal justice, or other related social sciences OR a combination of experience and training which includes 12 college credits in sociology, social welfare, psychology, gerontology, criminal justice, or other related social sciences, and one year of experience performing paraprofessional case management functions.

Clearances and a valid driver’s license will be required.

Education Opportunity: Caseworkers with a bachelor’s degree, who are employed by Children and Youth Services for a minimum of two years, may be eligible for the CWEL program, which provides substantial financial support, including tuition and other expenses, to a caseworker in completing a graduate level degree. Individuals enrolled in this program would enter into a contract with the agency to continue employment following their studies for a period of time.

As the Pennsylvania Game Commission continues to explore the possibility of American marten reintroduction within Penn’s Woods, the agency will be providing opportunities to learn more. 

Having disappeared from Pennsylvania more than 120 years ago, the American marten once was a common native species that inhabited forested areas within the state. The marten, belonging to the mustelid family, is the same size as the American mink having a similar length to a fox squirrel.

Martens are true omnivores eating a large diversity of mammals, plants, insects, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. The largest portion of their diet is made up of rodents, plant material and insects.

A release show for “Live at Cambridge Sound Studios,” the first album by Pocono Jones & The Bear is this Saturday, Feb. 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Coolidge Theatre at the Deane Center for the Performing Arts at 104 Main Street in Wellsboro.

The Bear is folk/blues artist Paul Wilkinson who lives in the Philadelphia area, but is originally from Westfield and Pocono Jones is Brad Hinton.

Wilkinson and Hinton have been performing as a duo for about five years. This is the first album the two have done together. They met about 15 years ago through bands they both played in around the Philadelphia area.

They will perform ten selections from their live acoustic album recorded during the pandemic in a back-to-the-basics folk music session. Most are familiar songs and four are originals.

Wilkinson was born and raised in Westfield. “My dad and brother both played guitar. I started playing guitar when I was 12,” he said. “I jammed with friends in high school.” In 2001, he graduated from Cowanesque Valley High School.

“I have been living in Chester County, Pa. for almost 20 years,” Wilkinson said. “I was more serious about music in West Chester Pa. where I performed at open mics and made new friends.
 Mason Porter was the first band I played with that released albums –  about five.  Since then, I have released my own album ‘400 Bears.’”

Asked why they had decided to release their new album in Wellsboro, Wilkinson said, “We have toured up to Wellsboro before and played at the Roost. It is always great to come back to my home area. And the Deane Center seemed like a great opportunity to celebrate our new record.”

The release show is BYOB with audience members encouraged to bring their favorite beverages and snacks.

Oswayo Valley School District

We are excited to announce that the OV Cafeteria received a Food Service Equipment Grant in the amount of $43,460 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The grant monies will be used to purchase a new dishwasher and stationary kettle. The USDA awarded over $2.7 million dollars to 130 school districts across the state, including Oswayo Valley.

Secret Place

Do you have a secret place, a place that you can be alone? It’s not that it’s actually secret but it’s your go to place when you want peace and quiet. For some oddly enough it’s the bathroom. For others it might just be a chair where they can curl up with a hot beverage and a book. I actually have a couple. In the house I have the basement, “Cave”. Although not finished, it is complete with a couch, comfortable chairs and a fireplace. Soft lighting sets it off into a quiet and cozy nook. I also have the Sunroom. It’s heated and filled with windows. Finally, on the hill behind my house is a swing. Even in the winter, I can find time to escape to that spot for quiet reflection and solitude. One of my granddaughters, after being out of breath from walking up the hill, asked me why I had put the swing so far up the hill. I replied that it keeps people away, she replied, “It works”.

The reality is we all need a quiet place to reflect and think. We need alone time, or down time as some call it. It’s healthy and rejuvenating at the same time. It’s a place to destress. Hopefully it’s a place that others will let you be without interruption. But that’s not always the case. Sometimes there’s a Martha in our lives. If you’re not familiar with Mary and Martha, you can read about them in Luke 10:38-42. The Martha’s in our life believe that “idle hands are the devil’s workshop”. In other words, you should be doing something other than sitting around. Growing up it might have been said like this, “If you can’t find something to do I’ll find something for you”. Sadly, there are many who feel guilty for taking down time. They feel that they need to be doing something and if they’re not then somehow that makes them bad or less valuable. 

Even though I have my secret places I still struggle with being idle for too long. Consequently, I really don’t rest. But if I’m going to live like Jesus lived then I need to learn to be okay with solitude. I don’t need to be busy all the time and even though I can hear the voice of my father telling me that he’ll find something for me to do, I have to remember that being quiet is okay. Quieting the accusing voice isn’t that easy is it? Thank about it.
