UPMC Oncologist: Treat Yourself to Exercise

By: Abdalla Sholi, M.D.
UPMC Hillman Cancer Center
While rest is always an important component of treatment and recovery, so is physical activity. After all, exercise has so many health benefits.
For years, physicians have recommended exercise to reduce the risk of developing cancer and to help cancer survivors thrive after treatment ends. But what about exercising during cancer treatment? Is it beneficial? Until recently, there were no recommendations.
The American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) recently issued the first-ever evidence-based exercise guidelines for adults in active cancer treatment.
Benefits of Exercise During Cancer Treatments
There is now good evidence that exercise, such as walking or structured exercise classes, can improve outcomes for cancer patients. In general, exercise can improve the body’s response to treatment, no matter the stage or type of cancer.

Cascade System Passed The Test
Portville Fire District – Engine Company #1
Yesterday morning around 5 am our cascade system was requested to assist Olean City at the scene of a structure fire on East State Street. Rescue 46 (portville 7) responded with a crew of two. Once on scene the crew assisted Olean City with filling their SCBA bottles. Our crew filled approx 70 bottles while on scene. We were released back into service around 10am.
This is the first time our new cascade system has truly been put to the test. We bought this current system when we bought the rescue in 2020, and while it’s been used numerous times since being placed into service this was it’s first true test. Filling 70+bottles is not a normal task. Our system held up great and could have continued to fill more if needed.
Great job by everyone operating on scene. It’s always great to see departments working well together.

ARCHERY DEER SEASON OPEN STATEWIDE
This is a case of enormity hidden in plain sight.
Take Penn State University’s Beaver Stadium – the second-largest stadium in the western hemisphere and the fourth-largest in the world with more than 105,000 seats – and fill it to capacity with fans three times over. Throw in another 40,000 or so concessionaires, parking attendants, custodians, tailgaters and the like.
What’s all that get you?
About as many camo-clad hunters as will hit the woods in the days and weeks ahead for Pennsylvania’s archery deer season. Roughly 350,000 people – about one of every two deer hunters here overall – will head afield in pursuit of whitetails with either a vertical bow or crossbow.
To put that into perspective, the Archery Trade Association earlier this year put out its first-ever estimate of bowhunter numbers nationwide. It credits Pennsylvania with more bowhunters than any other state, and 10% or so of all the bowhunters in the country.
