Free, in-person programs are being held this Saturday, Sept. 9 at Cherry Springs State Park at 4639 Cherry Springs Road, Coudersport, PA 16915. The park is 12 miles from Route 6 in Galeton via West Branch Road and 15 miles from Coudersport via Route 44. 

Star gazing programs are in the Night Sky Public Viewing Area. Park in the gravel lot and follow the walkway next to the restrooms to the seating area. 

Check the Clear Sky Chart or Astrospheric for 48-hour forecasts of cloud cover and viewing conditions. 

All visitors should arrive at the park before dark whether they are attending a star gazing program or are observing on their own. Leave pets at home.

All programs will be cancelled in the event of rain or thunder.

Registration is encouraged, but not required. The public may want to register because all registered participants will receive an email if a program has to be cancelled or modified due to weather, etc. 

WELLSBORO – Rep. Clint Owlett (R-Tioga/Bradford) is reminding area sportsmen and women to sign up for his upcoming Game Commission Night featuring a presentation by Pennsylvania Game Commission Furbearer Biologist Tom Keller.

The event will be held on Thursday, Sept. 14, from 6-8 p.m. at the Wellsboro Fireman’s Annex, 21 East Ave., Wellsboro. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.

Mid America Pet Food Issues Voluntary Recall Due to Possible Salmonella Health Risk

Mid America Pet Food, Mount Pleasant, Texas, is voluntarily recalling one lot of Victor Super Premium Dog Food, Hi-Pro Plus produced at its Mount Pleasant, Texas production facility because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania State Police (PSP) investigated 671 vehicle crashes resulting in 10 fatalities and 220 injuries during the four-day Labor Day weekend travel period, which ran September 1-4. Alcohol was a factor in 61 non-fatal crashes and two fatal crashes.

Troopers made 514 arrests for driving under the influence and issued 27,546 total traffic citations to include 864 for not wearing a seat belt and 233 tickets for failing to secure children in a child safety seat. Troopers issued 9,110 citations for failing to obey posted speed limits.

Online registration will end at noon this coming Wednesday, Sept. 13 for the 15th Annual Step Outdoors TRYathlon and 5K Trail Run/Walk. To register online, visit www.stepoutdoors.org.

Most who register by Sept. 13 will also get a free event T-shirt. Extras are ordered and assigned to entrants based on the date they register.

Individuals who register online for the 5K Trail Run/Walk will pay a $25 entry fee; to do the three legs of the triathlon solo, a $30 entry fee; and to do the triathlon as a member of a two- or three-person team, a $65 entry fee. There is also a processing fee. 

The TRYathlon & 5K Run/Walk will start at 10 a.m. next Saturday, Sept. 16, at Hills Creek State Park, 111 Spillway Road, seven miles northeast of Wellsboro in Charleston Township via Charleston Street and Hills Creek Lake Road.

Both check-in and in-person registration will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Sept. 16 in the tent between the park’s bathhouse and concession stand.

KANE – Rep. Martin Causer (R-Cameron/McKean/Potter) is reminding area seniors citizens and their family members and caregivers of the Kane Senior Citizens Expo coming up on

Friday, Sept. 8, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Kane Community Center, 46 Fraley St., Kane.

“There are so many programs and services available to support our senior citizens, but it still can be difficult for people to find the help they need,” Causer said. “I hope area seniors will take advantage of the opportunity to gather a lot of helpful information in one place.”

The event is free to attend, and lunch will be provided. State, county and local exhibitors will be on hand to distribute information and answer questions about a variety of issues. Health screenings will also be offered, and door prize drawings will be held at 12:30 p.m.

Causer noted he will also hold another expo on Friday, Oct. 13, at the Roulette Fire Hall.

How many times do we encounter hearing impaired people and wish that we could communicate with them? As we age, we gradually lose some of our hearing. Sign language can help. Also, mothers of pre-lingual children can use sign language as a tool with their little ones. Here is your opportunity to learn basic sign language that could help you or someone you care about.

Basic Sign Language will cover beginning sign language, the alphabet, conversational phrases and a variety of commonly used signs. In addition, basic facts essential to the correct use of the language will be addressed. A dedicated student could learn as many as 800 signs and understand signing and interpreting rules, basic deaf culture, and medical situations that cause deafness and loss of hearing.

Potter County has been awarded federal funds this year under the decades-old Community Development Block Grant program. Next in a series of public hearings on the 2023 CDBG distribution plan will be held at 10:30 am on Thursday, Sept. 7, in the F. W. Gunzburger County Office Building auditorium.

Potter County Commissioners Nancy Grupp, Barry Hayman and Paul Heimel will decide how the funds will be expended, based on qualifying criteria provided by the Pa. Dept. of Community and Economic Development. In recent years, bulk of the funds have been awarded to boroughs or townships seeking financial help for large-scale water or sewage treatment projects. To be eligible, projects must meet one or more of three objectives: benefit low- and moderate-income persons; prevent or eliminate slums or blight; and/or alleviate immediate threats to health and safety.

The commissioners maintain a three-year community development plan to assist them in decisions for each year’s allocations. This year’s blueprint calls for grants of $182,000 to Austin Borough to upgrade its water treatment plant and acquire and install a back-up power generator. Following the Sept. 7 hearing, the county will prepare its final grant application which must be submitted to DCED no later than Oct. 27.

COUDERSPORT, PA., Sept. 5, 2023 – UPMC is coordinating an emergency preparedness training exercise scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 19 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the parking lot located near the Emergency Department at UPMC Cole, 1001 E. 2^nd St., Coudersport.

The exercise is part of UPMC’s emergency preparedness planning. During the exercise, staff from UPMC will set up decontamination tents and other equipment used for HAZMAT and mass casualty response. Please be advised, this is only a training. Please do not be alarmed.
