Republicans Unveil Legislation to Combat Deadly Tranq Epidemic
HARRISBURG- Legislators will soon introduce a package of bills to combat the deadly “Tranq” drug epidemic destroying lives throughout the Commonwealth.
Tranq is an animal tranquilizer officially called Xylazine that is being laced into street narcotics like fentanyl.
“It is creating one of the deadliest drug threats our country has ever faced,” said Rep. Kristin Marcell (R-Bucks). “This powerful sedative is decimating neighborhoods throughout the Commonwealth, but especially in Philadelphia.”
The bill package will be introduced during Opioid and Heroin Epidemic Awareness Week in Pennsylvania to draw attention to the crisis and the crucial role awareness and education play in combatting this problem.
Youth End-of-Summer Party planned at Open Arms Church
A Youth End-of-Summer Party will take place Sunday, Sept. 17, from 6-8 pm at Open Arms Church in Bradford.
This event aims to provide activities for young attendees, including engaging games and opportunities to get to know one another. Open Arms Church encourages all participants to bring a friend along and, if possible, a favorite dish or snack to share with the group.
“While it may not mark the official end of summer, we wanted to create a fun-filled gathering for the kids, especially with school starting,” said Annette Dennison, who is the next-generation coordinator at Open Arms Church. “We invite everyone to join us and bring their friends to make this event even more enjoyable.”
In addition to the Youth End-of-Summer Party, Open Arms Church’s Student Ministry hosts regular meetings every Sunday from 6-8 pm at 1289 East Main St. in Foster Township, about a mile past Walmart. These gatherings offer a combination of engaging games, educational activities, and teachings centered around Jesus and the Bible.
“Open Arms Church’s Student Ministry provides a safe and welcoming environment for teens to get involved, have fun, and learn about Jesus and the Bible,” Dennison said. “We guarantee an enjoyable experience and look forward to welcoming new faces.”

STEP OUTDOORS TRYATHLON & 5K RUN/WALK IN-PERSON REGISTRATION IS THIS SATURDAY, SEPT. 16 AT HILLS CREEK STATE PARK PRESS RELEASE:
By 2 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 11, 84 people, both children and adults from Pennsylvania, New York and Delaware, had registered to participate in the 15th Annual Step Outdoors TRYathlon and 5K Trail Run/Walk being held this Saturday, Sept. 16 at Hills Creek State Park, 111 Spillway Road, Wellsboro, PA 16901. The park is seven miles northeast of Wellsboro in Charleston Township via Charleston Street and Hills Creek Lake Road.
That’s 21 more than had registered by this same time last year.
Of the 84, 29 have registered for the 5K only; 36 to run all three legs of the TRYathlon solo and 19 on a two- or three-member team to do the TRYathlon.
Online registration at www.stepoutdoors.org closes at noon this Wednesday, Sept. 13. Most who register by then will also get a free event T-shirt. Extras are ordered and assigned to entrants based on the date they register.
Both check-in and in-person registration will be from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. this Saturday, Sept. 16 in the tent between the park’s bathhouse and concession stand.
Individuals who register in person for the 5K Trail Run/Walk will pay a $25 entry fee; to do the three legs of the triathlon solo, a $30 entry fee; and to do the triathlon as a member of a two- or three-person team, a $65 entry fee. Any surplus event T-shirts will be available while supplies last.
The pre-race talk for all entrants, especially those participating for the first time, will be at 9:45 a.m.
The TRYathlon & 5K Run/Walk begin at 10 a.m. this Saturday.
The triathlon starts with the 5K on park roads and trails around the perimeter of Hills Creek Lake. All runners and walkers, whether they are participating in the 5K only or the triathlon, will start at the same time and location and follow the same course.
The next leg of the triathlon is paddling on the lake with competitors either kayaking or canoeing a 1.75-mile course identified with temporary markers.
The triathlon ends with bikers traveling 8 miles on a course of dirt and hardtop roads in and around the park.
The focus of the Step Outdoors TRYathlon is on trying rather than winning, on camaraderie rather than competition and on personal challenge rather than place of finish. That is the reason age and gender categories were eliminated in 2015.
More information and past results are posted at www.stepoutdoors.org.

K9S ATTEND SENIOR EXPO WITH DA Sep 12th, 2023
K9s with the County Detective Bureau K9 Unit accompanied District Attorney Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer to the Senior Expo organized by Representative Martin Causer and held at the Kane Area Community Center on Friday, September 8th. K9s LG, Nico and Izzy, along with their handlers Bob and Vicki Rinfrette and Jay Prosser manned a booth at the Expo where they showed visitors what common drugs and paraphernalia look. The group also talked to visitors about the K9 Unit and the various expertise of each dog – drug detection, tracking, and explosives. The DA, K9s and the handlers attended the Senior Expo held at Pitt-Bradford also organized by Representative Causer in August. The K9s are the face of the DA’s educational campaign that reminds children that police officers are their friend and to say “no” to drugs. (Photos courtesy of Theresa Auriemmo and Vicki Rinfrette).
