Our hearts are amazing organs, and we can often take them for granted. They steadily pump away, rhythmically beating life into our bodies. But what happens when your heartbeat becomes irregular, erratic, or even skips a beat? These incidents are called heart palpitations, and for most people, heart palpitations are a once-in-a-blue-moon occurrence. However, some may have dozens of these heart flutters a day, sometimes so strong that they feel like a heart attack.

A recurring irregular heartbeat is known as an arrhythmia and it’s important to have any irregular feeling near your heart or in your chest, heartbeat, or rhythm evaluated. Most palpitations are caused by a harmless hiccup in the heart’s rhythm. But these minor hiccups may be a sign of a problem in the heart or elsewhere in the body.

During arrhythmia, the heart either beats too slow (bradycardia), too fast (tachycardia), or irregularly (atrial fibrillation). Almost everyone experiences an occasional skipped heartbeat, fluttering, or racing heartbeat. While most events are harmless, some people have arrhythmias that are bothersome and sometimes dangerous.

A group of 15 UPMC medical workers received a commemorative check Wednesday after winning $1 million during a Mega Millions drawing in July.

Pennsylvania Lottery officials presented the check at Nittany MiniMart in Smethport, which is where the winning ticket was sold. The store received a $5,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

Each member of the group, which calls itself the Million Dollar Medicals, has already received a check for an estimated $48,600 after taxes. More….

Painting with Jessie is fun and relaxing! In this holiday series, professional watercolorist Jessie Vaughn will teach you how to paint beautiful holiday plaques or Christmas cards. No previous experience in watercolors is needed, as Jessie is comfortable teaching all levels.

Choose one of the following 1.5-hour classes (or sign up for more than one!):

• Fall leaves – Frameable 8” x10” or 11”x 14”
• Christmas saying – Plaque 8” x16”
• Selection of 4 Christmas cards you can paint

All plaques and prints are unframed, but Jessie will help you wax them to preserve them. All are sized to fit frames available from Amazon, Walmart, Michaels, etc.

Class times are Wednesday, October 25^th from 10:00 – 11:30 a.m., 5:30 – 7:00 p.m., or Thursday, October 26^th from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. The cost is $25/person for each class, and all supplies are provided. The regular meeting of the Galeton Borough Council was held this date in the Municipal Building with the following members present: Joe Petrencsik, Doug Droppa, Darrell Jackson, DJ Fuller, Ron Tarabori and Denny Dean.

Others present were: Mayor Garrote; Solicitor-Mike Plummer; Foreman-Joe Cimino; Gale Hose Reps-Linda Beacker and Nikki Shadle; Citizen-Beth Lounsbury; and Borough Secy-Andrea Caracciolo

President Petrencsik called the meeting to order at 7:00 PM followed by the Pledge to the Flag.

MINUTES

After reviewing, a motion was made by Doug Droppa, seconded by Darrell Jackson approving the 8/9/23 minutes as presented. All were in favor, motion carried.

Saint Gabriel Church, located at 203 Arnold Avenue in Port Allegany, will be hosting an Oktoberfest on Saturday, September 23 from 3 to 9 p.m. 

Activities will feature a Kinderfest, which is German for a children’s festival, including an inflatable bounce house and obstacle course, face painting, and Oktoberfest crafts. 

Other highlights include live music, German food such as bratwursts, sauerkraut, spaetzle, German potato salad, rouladen, chicken and dumplings, and German desserts. 

The live music will begin at 3 p.m. with The Little German Band, followed by Johnathan Meade at 5:00 p.m. and The Blue Smoothies at 7:00 p.m.  The event is open to the public. 

Halloween Spooktacular Events

Halloween events are planned for Cameron County and kick off Saturday, October 28 by bringing back a tradition. A Halloween parade of costumes is set to step off at 3 p.m. from the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce office. Trick-or-treaters will parade on the downtown sidewalks throughout the business district collecting treats from businesses. Trunk or Treat opens at 4 p.m. along with Smoker’s Spooktacular event in the Emporium Town Square.
Dare to Enter the Cameron County Recreation Center Haunted House opens Saturday, October 28 through October 31, 6-10 p.m. The proceeds benefit the programs at the recreation center. Trick or Treat in downtown Emporium is set for October 28 from 6-8 p.m.

Honest, transparent and secure elections remain the cornerstone of our Constitutional Republic.

Sadly, by unilaterally implementing automatic voter registration, Gov. Shapiro has once again demonstrated his ignorance of the entire electoral process and his inability to work with the Legislature as required by the Pennsylvania Constitution.

Circumventing the Legislature – and the will of the people – is a blatant act of defiance against our Constitutional Republic.

It bypasses the checks and balances that are in place to safeguard the interests of all citizens.

The Pennsylvania Constitution makes it crystal clear that any time government is forcibly compelling the people to do something – in this case registering online to vote through PennDOT – the rule of law must be followed to the letter.

The governor’s automatic voter registration scheme amounts to the rigging of the process to favor thoughtless and even accidental registration in the name of ‘democracy.’

Any laws made unilaterally through executive orders – without the full scrutiny and debate that this committee and the legislature are obligated to provide – are the work of tyrants.
