The 2023 Alumni Banquet was held Saturday at the VMI (Veterans Memorial, Inc.). Many classes were represented from the PAHS Class of 1951 to 2023. Following the dinner catered by the VMI Auxiliary, a short business meeting was held and the current officers were re-elected. This year’s Fall Antique Show & Sawmill Run will be held on Saturday, October 7th and Sunday, October 8th. Northern Pennsylvania typically reaches peak fall foliage conditions around this time so the forests surrounding the museum will (hopefully) be decked in rich and beautiful colors.
The Antique Show features multiple antique vendors who will be selling their wares in the museum program room. Our vendors have a little bit of everything, including antique tools, vintage clothing, collectible coins, glassware, books, and furniture. Vendors open 9am-5pm Saturday and 9am-3pm Sunday.
Food and beverages will be available for purchase. No ATM is available on site so plan your visit accordingly.
Outside, the museum grounds will come alive with historic trade demonstrations. On Saturday 10/7 (ONLY) the engines of our steam-powered circular sawmill will be running from 10 AM to 3 PM. Other demonstrations will be happening over both days of the event at the birch still, lumber camp kitchen, blacksmith shop, and the Eastern Loggers model railroad display.
It’s a great time to visit the museum. Hope to see you there!
As you all likely already know, my aged brain doesn’t retain like it once did so I’m sending this email to cover all bases and make sure you all know that Goodies For Our Troops will be CLOSED all next week of Oct. 2nd.
We plan to hopefully reopen on Monday, Oct. 9th. If that has to change, I’ll let you know. If you don’t hear from me, we’ll go back with the flow then.

Tiadaghton Chapter #688 of Trout Unlimited is meeting this coming Tuesday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. at the Tioga County Conservation District office at 1867 Shumway Hill Road, Wellsboro, PA 16901. Attendees are asked to go in the back door. Leading the meeting is Vice President Art Antal.
The meeting is free and open to the public. Participants do not have to be a member to attend.
On the agenda to be discussed will be the bank stabilization projects and thermal imaging drone flights that have been completed on Long Run; updates from the Pennsylvania Trout Unlimited annual meeting and planning for the Fly Fishing Film Tour fundraiser.

A fitting tribute to a man who dedicated so much to our community. I was honored to join in the official dedication ceremony for the Richard “Dick” Kallenborn Memorial Bridge on Lower Portage Road in Liberty Township. As a long-time member of the McKean County Planning Commission, Kallenborn advocated for funding for many infrastructure projects, including this new bridge. We were joined by members of the Kallenborn family, including Dick’s widow, Peggy, who cut the ribbon on the new bridge. Thank you to Liberty Township Supervisors Chairman Dick Brown for organizing the ceremony.
The Coudersport Falcons host the Elk County Crusaders tonight at 7 PM. It is a homecoming for Coudersport.

The Nessmuk Rod and Gun Club’s last three skeet shoots for members and the public are from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. this Sunday, Oct. 1 and Sundays, Oct. 8 and 15 at the club’s outdoor range at 4646 Route 287 in Delmar Township, 6.5 miles south of Wellsboro.
The fee to shoot skeet for members and non-members 18 years of age and older is $6 per round of 25 clays. Skeet shooting is $3 for youth ages 12 to 17.
Shooters have to provide their own shotguns and ammunition. Eye and ear protection are required.

Register by this coming Monday, Oct. 2 for the Refuse To Be A Victim® Crime Prevention and Personal Safety Seminar being held next Saturday, Oct. 7 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sullivan Township Community Center at 103 Williams Road, Mainesburg, PA 16932. Instructors are Marilyn Jones and Pat Butts.
This seminar is for men and women of all ages, including those in college.
“This is a no gun, no shooting seminar,” Jones said. Created by the women of the National Rifle Association, this course covers personal safety while at home, in the workplace and in other situations, such as shopping.
“Those who attend will learn more about what they can do to be safe, to make themselves and where they live less vulnerable, and how to be more observant in their daily lives to minimize the risk of becoming a victim,” said Jones.
The fee is $15 to cover the cost of the book and classroom time payable to Jones when registering.

WASHINGTON — FEMA, in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), will conduct a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) this fall.
The national test will consist of two portions, testing WEA and EAS capabilities. Both tests are scheduled to begin at approximately 2:20 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Oct. 4.

The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) is warning Pennsylvanians of a potential scam in which individuals receive a phone call from the “Department of Public Welfare” – the former name of DHS – asking for information about individuals’ utility assistance. The scammer then states that the individual overpaid for utilities and asks for bank card information to provide a refund. DHS will never ask for information about any public assistance programs or personal financial information via unsolicited or random phone calls or texts. Please report any texts or calls about DHS benefits that seem suspicious by calling the DHS fraud tip line at 1-844-DHS-TIPS (1-844-347-8477). DHS does send informational text messages and phone calls to people who receive SNAP, Medicaid, and other benefits from the number 1-833-648-1964. However, DHS’ text messages will not include: details about a person’s benefits, such as the amount of SNAP they are authorized to receive; a request for specific personal information; and/or links to unofficial websites. Most DHS texts will direct people to dhs.pa.gov, COMPASS, or a site that ends in .gov or .org. For more information, click here. Is Your License Plate Unreadable? We’ll Help You Replace It!  If you are dealing with an unreadable license plate on your vehicle, please join us on Thursday, Oct. 26, for an event to help you get that plate replaced at NO CHARGE. The event will be from 4-7 p.m. at the Lewis Run Volunteer Fire Department, 46 Main St., Lewis Run. State law requires PennDOT to replace license plates that are deemed illegible at no cost to the vehicle owner. A plate is considered illegible when one or more numbers or letters cannot be recognized from 50 feet away, typically due to blistering, peeling, discoloration, loss of reflectivity or other damage. The McKean County Sheriff’s Office will be on hand to view driver’s plates, and if the plates are deemed illegible, paperwork to start the replacement process will be completed. Those who plan to attend should bring their vehicle with the affected plate attached, along with their unexpired PA driver’s license and current vehicle registration card. Fall Driving Tips  Now that fall has arrived, PennDOT is reminding motorists that wet leaves, fog, sun glare and frost are a few driving hazards they will encounter this season. Weather conditions can be unpredictable in the fall and an increase in deer activity adds yet another danger of which to be aware. There are steps drivers can take to help make their commutes safer. PennDOT offers the following fall driving tips: 1. Increase your following distance in severe weather, at dusk and dawn, and when in an area with wet leaves. If you are being tailgated, let the other driver pass. 2. Check your vehicle’s headlights, taillights and turn signals to ensure they are working properly since darkness will be a part of many drivers’ morning and/or evening commutes. Make sure you turn on your headlights as the sunlight fades. 3. Have your vehicle’s heating and wiper systems checked to ensure they are working properly. 4. Be sure you have tires with sufficient tread depth in case of an early season snow. 5. Watch for deer. Autumn brings an increase in deer activity, and drivers are reminded to watch carefully for deer darting across and along roadways. Boating Facility Grant Program  The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) is seeking applications for the next round of Boating Facility Grants to help communities capitalize on the surge in new boating activity. The Boating Facility Grant Program provides grants for planning, acquisition, development, expansion and rehabilitation of public boating facilities located on the waters of the Commonwealth. Funding requests require a 50% match. The PFBC encourages townships, boroughs, and municipal and county governments to apply. Nonprofit groups, including land trusts, conservancies and watershed associations, are also eligible to apply. Private businesses and service clubs are not eligible for direct funding but are encouraged to partner with their local county or municipality. The deadline to apply is Saturday, Dec. 30. After nearly five years of planning and construction, the PA Wilds Center for Entrepreneurship has officially opened its PA Wilds Media Lab in Kane.
Located at 61 N. Fraley St., 2nd Floor, the PA Wilds Media Lab is one of the first brick-and-mortar facilities operated by the PA Wilds Center for Entrepreneurship (PA Wilds Center), the nonprofit charged with coordinating the regional strategy to promote the rural 13-county region and its tremendous public land base as a premier outdoor recreation destination and way to stimulate and help revitalize rural economies.
Clearfield, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that Route 146 between Clermont and Colegrove in McKean County will be closed during daylight hours for a paving project starting Monday, October 2. This project will improve the ride quality and extend the life of the roadway.
While the road is closed, traffic will follow a detour using Route 6 and Route 46. PennDOT will reopen the road at the end of each workday and anticipates completing the work in less than a week. All work is weather and schedule dependent.
IA Construction Corporation of Franklin, PA, is the contractor on this $4.3 million project.
