McKean County Connservation District Employees Recognized
The Northeast Association of Conservation District Employees (NACDE) recently announced their 2023 award recipients.
Cliff Lane Received the Northeast Association of Conservation District Employees (NACDE) District Leader Award. This award is presented to a director or other individual who is doing an outstanding job working with district professionals on a regional basis, helps obtain the goals of NACDE and the regional partnership, and assists in expanding employee professional development.
Cliff currently serves as PACD (Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts) North West Region Director, NACD (National Association of Conservation Districts) North East Region Representative, and Commissioner Secretary/Treasurer at the McKean County Conservation District.
Sandy Thompson, Manager of McKean County Conservation District and former Vice President of the Northeast Association of Conservation District Employees (NACDE), received the 2023 NACDE President’s Award. President Jeff Parker, from Steuben County, New York, selected Sandy for the award.
Ulysses Community Honors Maryjane Haskins For Service as Mayor
The Ulysses Area Improvement hosted a Community Picnic on Sunday, Oct 1. At the picnic they surprised and honored MaryJane Haskins for her years of service as the Borough Mayor.
Mrs. Haskins was presented items from Rep. Martin Causer’s Office by Susan Paisley and Shelley Butler. Flowers from 2023 Miss Ulysses Allison Lewis, a BIG Thank You note signed by everyone at the picnic presented by President of Ulysses Area Improvement, Alicia Freeman.
A presentation from the Potter County Commissioners, presented by Commissioners Nancy Grupp and Barry Hayman. A key to the City from acting Mayor Roy Hunt, and from the Borough Council members, presented by Steve Riley.
All of MaryJane and her husband Bill‘s children surprised her by being present for her being honored. MaryJane has served as Mayor of Ulysses since January of 2006.
Causer to Offer Veterans Services at Local Offices
BRADFORD – Rep. Martin Causer (R-Turtlepoint) is again offering area veterans the opportunity to work with a representative from the American Legion to ensure they get the services and support they need.
Due to changes initiated by the American Legion, appointments in the Bradford and Kane offices will be conducted virtually via a tablet.
Appointments are required for meetings with the Legion representative, whether they are in person, by phone or by tablet. The schedule is as follows:
PITT-BRADFORD PLANS DUKE DAYS FOR COMPUTER AND ENGINEERING AND OPEN HOUSES
BRADFORD, Pa. – The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford will hold four Saturday admissions open houses this fall and two new events called Duke Days, which are designed for students interested in computer and engineering majors.
Duke Days for Engineering and Technology Majors will take place on Oct. 9 and Dec. 11. They will begin at 1 p.m. in the George B. Duke Engineering and Information and Technology Building and will provide prospective students and their families a chance to talk with faculty and learn about Pitt-Bradford programs in computer information systems and technology, energy engineering technology, energy science and technology, engineering, engineering science, information systems and mechanical engineering technology.

Last minute but we have been informed that tomorrow 10/3/2023 at 6:00 pm there will be a meeting for interested parties about getting the Smethport area Chamber of Commerce back up and running. The meeting will take place at the Borough office 201 West Main St.
Port Allegany 2023 Homecoming Queen & King
PAHS Homecoming Royalty was introduced during a halftime ceremony of the Gator-Wolves football game held in Port Allegany on Saturday.
The court included Levi Wilfong, Miska Young, Braylon Button, Peyton Stiles, Kayleigha Dowell, Amber Funk, Julia Postlewait and Lily Babcock.
Named King and Queen were Henry Kisler and Jenn Baxter. Crowning the 2023 King and Queen were Noah Archer and Brielle Budd, last year’s King and Queen.
Henry is the son of Wade and Mary Grace Kisler. Jenn is the daughter of Tim Baxter.
Following the Gator victory over the Wolves, the Senior High Dance was held Saturday night at the school. Spirit Week and Homecoming activities are sponsored by the Student Council.

UPMC Wellsboro to Host Free Hernia Screenings
Wellsboro, Pa., October 2, 2023 – UPMC Wellsboro is offering free hernia screenings on Monday, Oct. 9, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. These screenings are offered by appointment only at the UPMC Wellsboro Office of General Surgery, 1 Main St., Wellsboro.
Darius Abadi, D.O., and Emily Solow, D.O., General Surgery, UPMC in North Central Pa., will conduct these hernia screenings and recommend follow-up care if necessary. A bulge that is underneath the skin in your abdominal area along with a burning, aching, or pain that worsens when lifting, coughing, or straining are all signs of a hernia.

It is with great sadness we share that on September 29th, 2023, My sister’s 19-year-old daughter Layanah Irene Griffin was taken by the hands of another. She leaves behind a huge family including 2 younger brothers.
For reasons beyond our understanding, someone she had placed her trust in and loved ripped her away from this world. We are utterly devastated by the news, and we are left with many questions that may go unanswered. We cannot fathom how anyone could go through with such a horrific act on such a kind and caring soul.
Layanah was a student at Mansfield University. She was the life of any room. Her smile , her giggle, her love for everyone but herself was never dismissed. She had a passion for life, the voice of an angel, the hands of an artist, and a heart too big for this world. We will never forget the joy or beautiful memories she left with us.
We humbly ask family, friends, and our community for your support. Your financial donations will help cover funeral costs, movers, and work missed during this difficult time. No amount is too small. We thank you in advance for your thoughts, prayers, and donations as we help my sister and her boys normalize their lives as much as possible, with the loss of Layanah.

Galeton Weather Report September, 2023
September was yet again a nice summer weather month. We missed the prolonged wet rain events along the east coast. Morning temperatures were mainly in the 40’s and 50’s. A few 60’s edged in on a few mornings. Afternoon readings were in the 60s and mid 70’s . We had 25 foggy mornings and three thunderstorms. The average high temperature for September is 69 degrees and the average low is 45.
Average monthly rainfall is 4.13″ This year we received 3.95″ Last year the reading was 5.99″
Pine Creek is looking good and of course the lawn tractors are roaring away full force. Perhaps the lawns will be mowed now until Christmas. Do you remember when we stopped mowing on Labor Day? Well have a good Fall. The leaves are turning very slowly and will not be as colorful this year. Keep your snow shovel and blade for the tractor at the ready.

This year’s Fall Antique Show & Sawmill Run will be held on Saturday, October 7th and Sunday, October 8th. Northern Pennsylvania typically reaches peak fall foliage conditions around this time so the forests surrounding the museum will (hopefully) be decked in rich and beautiful colors.
The Antique Show features multiple antique vendors who will be selling their wares in the museum program room. Our vendors have a little bit of everything, including antique tools, vintage clothing, collectible coins, glassware, books, and furniture. Vendors open 9am-5pm Saturday and 9am-3pm Sunday.
Food and beverages will be available for purchase. No ATM is available on site so plan your visit accordingly.
Outside, the museum grounds will come alive with historic trade demonstrations. On Saturday 10/7 (ONLY) the engines of our steam-powered circular sawmill will be running from 10 AM to 3 PM. Other demonstrations will be happening over both days of the event at the birch still, lumber camp kitchen, blacksmith shop, and the Eastern Loggers model railroad display.
It’s a great time to visit the museum. Hope to see you there!
Zachary Christopher Gausman, of 141 Poplar Road, St. Marys.
Zachary Christopher Gausman, 23, of 141 Poplar Road, St. Marys, passed away unexpectedly, Thursday, September 28, 2023.
He was born October 22, 1999, in St. Marys, son of Christopher and Michele Buck Gausman. He was a graduate of St. Marys Area High School, Class of 2018.
Along with his loving parents, he is survived by two brothers, Connor and Bryce Gausman; maternal grandparents, Clarence and Ruth Buck of Emporium; his paternal grandfather, Joe Gausman of St. Marys; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Galeton Fall Fest – Great Success –
The Galeton Chamber of Commerce held its 18th Annual Fall Fest on Sat., Sept. 30 in John J. Collins Park in Centertown. The weather and temperature were perfect as hundreds of attendees walked through the park to view the 65 vendors’ items. From doughnuts to BBQ, to crafts, candles, and clothing were available to purchase.
Michele Petito – Chairperson of the event was very pleased and excited to have vendors from as far as New Philadelphia, Ohio and Watkins Glen, NY participate. The Chamber is looking forward to next year’s event.
