10TH ANNUAL BENEFIT FOR HOMELESS ANIMALS IS TODAY SATURDAY, OCT 19 AT THE KNOXVILLE VFW WITH MUSIC, FOOD, CHANCE AUCTION AND SALE OF WOODEN ITEMS
At the Tenth Annual Benefit for Homeless Animals, the public can view the wide selection of items donated for the Chance Auction by regional and local businesses, such as gift cards, jewelry, toys, dishes, bakeware and more today Saturday, Oct. 19 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Howard S. Lines Knoxville VFW Post 6753 at 703 Boatman Road, Knoxville, Pa. 16928. There will not be an admission or cover charge to attend.
During those times, auction tickets will be provided for people to place with the auction items they want to win. A numbered style of ticket that does not require people to write in their names is being used.
There will also be a 50/50 raffle.
In addition, more than 25 handcrafted wood items made by Jerry Gaye will be sold at this year’s benefit. They will be available for purchase on Oct. 18 and 19 during the Yard Sale being held in conjunction with the Chance Auction with the funds to be donated too. Among the items are: a 68-inch long by 16-inch wide model of the American Civil War ironclad warship, the USS Monitor; bar stools, log furniture, a giant pine cone, planters, big stars, lanterns, birdhouses, beverage holders, charcuterie boards and more.
Beginning at noon this Saturday bluegrass and old-time music will be playing and chili, hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and other food will be available for purchase.
Drawings for the Chance Auction and raffle winners’ names will begin at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
Proceeds from this year’s benefit, being presented by Jerry and Helen Gaye of Osceola, will be donated to the Heading Home Center at 725 Gee Road, Tioga, PA 16946. It is operated by Second Chance Animal Sanctuaries, Inc., a volunteer-based organization that was founded in 2001 in Tioga County. “The Heading Home Center has guaranteed that 100 percent of the funds we raise will be spent on the homeless dogs and cats in their care,” Jerry said.
In September of 2016, Second Chance opened its Heading Home Center in Middlebury Township. Since then, 914 cats and 802 dogs have been adopted and the center has reunited more than 225 dogs with their owners.
People are welcome to donate money, a bag of dog or cat food or cleaning supplies. Donations of any kind of dry or wet cat and dog foods are always appreciated. The animals at the center eat 200 pounds of Purina Pro or Victor dog food and 4Health cat food each month.

BLACK TIE GROOVE TO PERFORM MOTOWN, SOUL AND FUNK FOR WELLSBORO COMMUNITY CONCERT ASSOCIATION SHOW TODAY SATURDAY, OCT. 19
Black Tie Groove will be singing and playing Motown, Soul and Funk from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s this Saturday, Oct. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Coolidge Theatre at the Deane Center for the Performing Arts at 104 Main Street in Wellsboro. This is the second concert of the Wellsboro Community Concert Association’s 76th six-concert season.
Known for their high-energy performances, this New Jersey-based group features seven talented musicians including lead vocalists Erin Kukla and Eric Delaney; Keith Kukla on lead guitar; Tony Chibaro on drums; Joe Gorgolione on bass guitar; Joe Andreacchi on keyboards; and Ricky Paetzell on saxophone.
Among the songs Black Tie Groove will perform are the Temptations’ “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg”; Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell’s “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough”; Patti LaBelle and the Labelle’s “Lady Marmalade”; Aretha Franklin’s “Respect”; Frankie Valli’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”; and Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons’ “Oh What a Night”.
Seating is in individual, comfortable, theatre-style chairs.
Tickets, if available, will be sold at the door Saturday night starting at 6:30 p.m.
The other four Saturday night 7:30 p.m. concerts being presented in the Deane Center’s Coolidge Theatre during the Wellsboro Community Concert Association’s 2024-2025 season are: Nov. 16, The Gibson Brothers, Bluegrass at its Finest; Feb. 15, 2025, House of Hamill, Upcycled Celtic Folk and Vintage Vibes; March 15, 2025, Dàimh, award winning ‘Gaelic Super Group”; and April 5, 2025, The EG Kight Trio with EG Kight’s blend of “country flavored southern fried Blues.”
A Season Subscription for adults 19 and older represents a 50 percent savings over the individual ticket price for each of the five remaining WCCA concerts. There is a student subscription for ages 13 to 18 for the concert series. Youngsters ages 12 and under are admitted free to the concert series when accompanied by a paying adult. Please reserve a seat for any child attending for free.

Suzanne M. Lear-South, 74, of Cedar Street passed away Monday (Oct. 14, 2024) surrounded by her loving husband and sons at The Pavilion at BRMC.
Born Aug. 19, 1950, in Erie, she was a daughter of the late Neal G. and Tonette “Toni” F. (Curcio) Lear. She was a 1968 graduate of Bradford High School.
On Jan. 16, 1971, at St. Bernard Church, she married Robert A. South, who survives.
After high school, Susie was employed at Case Cutlery in the shipping department. She also worked for Dan Ross at Colors Galore, and she was a private home decorator and did wallpapering. Susie also worked for Bradford Township as a cleaning contractor for 30 years, until retiring.

SMETHPORT – Sen. Cris Dush (R-25) and Congressman Glenn “GT” Thompson (R-15) are pleased to announce their upcoming Cameron County area satellite office hours for October 2024.
On Wednesday, Oct. 30, team members from both offices will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Driftwood Senior Center, 7806 Bridge Street, Driftwood, PA 15832.
Dush’s staff will be available to assist with any state government-related issues and available legislative services. These include helping Cameron County area residents deal with problems involving state laws, state government or state agencies; assisting residents with PennDOT paperwork, driver’s license and vehicle registration applications and renewals; handicap placards and dead tags (plates); information and applications for senior citizen benefit programs, including Property Tax/Rent Rebate and PACE/PACENET prescription drug programs; state tax forms; and many others.
Thompson’s staff will be available to meet with residents who need assistance from federal agencies, such as the Social Security Administration, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the IRS.

NEARLY ALL PITT-BRADFORD AND PITT-TITUSVILLE ASN STUDENTS TAKING LICENSING EXAM PASS
Ninety-five percent of the Associate of Science in Nursing students at University of Pittsburgh at Bradford and its program at the University of Pittsburgh at Titusville who took their licensing exam in the last year passed.
Dr. Jean Truman, associate professor of nursing and director of the nursing program, received the news earlier this week that 20 graduates had passed the National Council Licensure Exam for registered nurses, commonly known as the NCLEX-RN.
SENTENCING IN FAKE “KIDNAPPING FOR DRUGS” SCHEME
(MCKEAN COUNTY, Pennsylvania: October 17, 2024): District Attorney Stephanie Vettenburg-Shaffer reports that Tuesday HALE, formerly of Bradford, was sentenced to state prison at a sentencing hearing at the McKean County Courthouse this afternoon. HALE was charged by Officer Joshua Frederoski of City of Bradford Police after a man reported that he had received a message that his girlfriend had been kidnapped and ransom was demanded in the form of controlled substances.
Following investigation, HALE and a co-defendant were charged. HALE was convicted at a jury trial of Attempted Acquisition of a Controlled Substance (Felony); Solicitation to Commit Possession with Intent to Deliver a Controlled Substance (Felony); Conspiracy Terroristic Threats (Misdemeanor ); and Criminal Use of a Communication Facility (Felony 3). Assistant District Attorney Casey Graffius prosecuted the case on behalf of the Commonwealth. In a separate case filed by Officer Matthew Gustin, HALE pled guilty to Possession of a Controlled Substance -Cocaine (Misdemeanor). The Judge sentenced HALE to a term of incarceration of 3 ½ years to 7 years, drug and alcohol treatment, submit a DNA sample, and additional terms. She is not eligible for any early parole program.

Elaine Janette Blowers, 89, of Painted Post, New York
Elaine Janette Blowers of Painted Post, New York entered into the joy of her Lord on Sunday, October 13, 2024. Elaine was born on June 27, 1935, to Everette and Evelyn (Janousky) Blowers in Sharpsville, Pennsylvania.
Elaine graduated from Wellsboro High School in 1953, completed her bachelor’s degree from Mansfield State Teachers College in 1959, and did postgraduate work in Library Sciences. She taught high school English and worked in the library at Addison Central High School for thirty-plus years. Following retirement, she also taught English-second language for Corning Incorporated and taught Bible and English classes at Wesley Academy in Elkland, Pennsylvania. Elaine was an avid tennis player and skier and could be often seen taking daily walks around her neighborhood. Tending to her home, lawn, and beautiful flower gardens were her chief joys and gave her great satisfaction, bringing beauty to the neighborhood and sharing her special sunshine with everyone.

Rose A. Winans, 94, of Seneca Street, passed away on Monday, October 14, 2024, at Highland Park. She was born August 4, 1930, in Pennsylvania, the daughter of the late Samuel and Pauline (Frederick) Vansice. In Alma Church she married Louis Winans, who predeceased her.
Rose was raised in Pennsylvania and moved to Allegany County in the 1950s with her husband Louis. She was employed by Gabriel’s (The Wellsville Motel) as a housekeeper for many years. She was a member of Brookside Wesleyan Church. She loved Halloween, watching television and taking care of her lawn until her health prevented it.
FEMA Hits $5 Million Mark!
The Federal Emergency Management Agency hit an important milestone October, 11 when grants it has awarded to Commonwealth residents under its Individuals and Households Program (IHP) totaled $5,020,070.14. The grants went to residents of Lycoming, Potter, Tioga and Union counties for losses they suffered as a result of Tropical Storm Debby, August 8-9.
In the month since September 11 when President Biden issued the presidential disaster declaration, 1,046 residents of the four counties have registered with FEMA to establish eligibility for federal disaster assistance. Registrants from Tioga County led the count with 426, Lycoming County came second with 349 residents registered, then Potter with 207 and Union with 64.

On October 17 at 10:13 am Shinglehouse Ambulance was dispatched to Horse Run Rd. for a fall victim
