Second Alarm House Fire in Salamanca, NY
At 12:50 PM on Sunday, Salamanca Fire Dept. was dispatched to a house fire at 25 Ward Street in the City.
Second Alarm: Mutual aid from several departments dispatched to scene. Fire on second floor of a 2 1/2 story residence.
William W. Jones, 76, of Alpharetta, GA; Former Bolivar/Wellsville, NY Resident
William Jones, 76, of Alpharetta, Ga., passed away on March 24, 2024.
Throughout his life, Wily pursued knowledge, gave generously, loved his family and was enormously proud of his children and grandchildren.
Wily, also known as Bill or Wayne, grew up in Bolivar, NY, and attended Bolivar Central School, where he was active in many clubs, sports and theater. He graduated from Alfred University and in 1969 was commissioned by General William Westmoreland as an infantry 2LT in the United States Army Reserve. Granted an educational delay to take advantage of a scholarship, he earned an MBA from Syracuse University in the spring of 1971. He served 10 years in the Army Reserve and rose to the rank of Captain. Wily married Deborah Joyce of Long Island in East Islip, NY, in 1972.
Shortly after finishing graduate school at Syracuse, Wily started working with his parents in the family business, an advertising shopper called the Moneysaver that his father started in 1953. Wily helped expand its circulation area and profitability and bought the Moneysaver in 1981. Wily always credited the success of the business to the talented and dedicated team that worked there. Together, they won over 50 state, regional and national awards for graphic design and twice won first place General Excellence from Free Community Papers of New York (FCPNY) and Mid-Atlantic Community Papers Association. They won first place Community Service in the nation from Association of Free Community Papers. Wily served on the board of directors of FCPNY for 25 years, serving two terms as president, was named Publisher of the Year in 2009, and served on the PaperChain national board. Wily sold the business and retired in 2011 and moved with his wife to the Atlanta area in 2013. Upon moving to Georgia, he and Deborah enjoyed a newcomers group and made wonderful friends through participation in a wine-and-dine group. Wily also was an active member of the Lions Club both in Wellsville, NY, and Roswell, Ga.
Wily spent most of his life in Wellsville, NY, where he made lifelong friends and was active in the community. He and his wife raised two children, Jennifer and Jeffrey. He was raised in the Methodist faith but converted to Catholicism in part because of his relationship with Monsignor McCarthy. Wily was an avid reader, always pursuing knowledge, particularly about politics and national news. His political views were informed by what he saw during the Vietnam War era, and he had a great love for his country and a great passion about the importance of providing opportunities to those less fortunate than he was. He was a loyal Buffalo Bills fan, taking his family to two home games per year during the late 1980s and early 1990s, and he enjoyed watching college basketball, particularly nearby St. Bonaventure, his alma mater Syracuse, and West Virginia because of family affiliation. He loved photography and always sought out the newest gadgets, enjoyed visiting museums, exploring new places, and attending theater and symphony productions, and he hosted memorable family vacations in Kiawah Island, St. Simons Island, Amelia Island and Asheville.
Wily is predeceased by his parents, William and Marian Jones. Wily is survived by his wife of 51 years, Deborah, children Jennifer Boyd and Jeffrey Jones, son-in-law Joel Boyd, daughter-in-law Heather Jones, brother James Jones, grandchildren Emily Boyd, Matthew Boyd, Hudson Jones and Parker Jones, many nieces and nephews including Doug Jones, and lifelong friend John Bevilacqua.
A memorial service will take place at a future date.

Working Structure Fire At Kane Hardwoods
Kane, PA–At 5:09 AM on Sunday, Kane Fire Dept. has been dispatched to a working structure fire at Kane Hardwoods at 95 Hardwood Drive. A second alarm requesting Mt. Jewett, Hamlin, Ludlow, Wilcox, Johnsonburg & Ridgway to scene. The building is evacuated.
Chief reports entire conveyor belt is on fire with extension into the silo near the rear of the complex.
Fire Units were leaving the scene around 9:15 AM. Their fast response & efficient work obviously saved this business from a potentially catastrophic fire.
Coroner: Two Dead in St. Marys House Fire
Elk County Coroner Michelle A. Muccio- Krise is releasing the following information in regards to a fatal house fire that occurred on Saturday, March 30, 2024 at approximately 8:15 AM on Jackson Road in the City of St. Marys, Elk County.
Two decedents were located inside the home once the fire was contained and were pronounced dead at the scene by Elk County Coroner Michelle A. Muccio-Krise. Both victims appear to have perished from smoke inhalation, and their identities are being withheld at this time pending notification of family.

Donald E. Mahovlich, 69, and Susan A. Mahovlich, 68, of Jackson Road, St. Marys, died unexpectedly on Saturday, March 30, 2024 as a result of a fire in their home.
Crash Closes Route 6 in Richmond Township, Tioga County
Montoursville, PA – Motorists are advised Route 6 is closed in both directions just east of Route 549 (Roseville Road) in Richmond Township, Tioga County due to a vehicle crash.
Eastbound traffic is being detoured via Roseville Road. Westbound traffic is being detoured via Hill Road and Route 2022 (Old State Road in Sullivan Township.
The road is expected to be closed for several hours. Motorists are urged to drive with caution in the area.

Austin Dam Show Cancelled for 2024; Memorial Planned for Musician Who Died at 2023 Event
Attention, Richard Hadfield has announced
There will be no official Dam Show this year.
Upon further reflection, it is not the right thing to do.
I will also announce that, I, Richard Hadfield who has coordinated the show for the past 8 years will be stepping down. Although I have thoroughly enjoyed everyone that has come to the show every year…admittedly some when they arrive and others when they leave…I must be on my way.
In lieu of The Dam Show there will be a memorial for Shae Ebner at 3 pm on Saturday, August 24th in front of the dam by the eagle.
Food and refreshments to follow and hopefully some music.
To the Ebner family and friends, you have my deepest apologies. Regardless of the circumstances of your friend, son, and brother’s death, it was not right of me not to address it.
Please forgive me.

Friday Afternoon Crash in Bradford Township
Bradford Township Volunteer Fire Department
On Friday, March 29th at 1600 hrs station 15, city ambulance 1, and BTPD were dispatched for a 1 vehicle crash into a pole. Station 15 arrived to find 1 patient self-extricated. Ambulance 1 requested a helicopter and station 6 was dispatched to set up a landing zone. Emergency personnel were on the scene for about an hour controlling traffic.

How many times have you uttered “Now what” and wondered what was going to happen next. Have you been in that place? Have you been in that place where everything was going well and suddenly the bottom dropped out? Plan as we might, life doesn’t always go as planned. In one moment, you’re going in one direction and the next you’re no longer sure of what direction to take. When you find yourself in that place what do you do? Do you immediately take action or do you wait. Sometimes the best decision is to do nothing. Let the dust settle so that you can see clearly what’s ahead.
Soon Easter will be behind us, then what? Where do we go from here? Do we just go about our daily routine? What did those early disciples do? They hid, that’s what they did and then when they saw the risen Christ, they still didn’t know what to do. So many questions, so many unanswered dreams and hopes. I can even imagine them saying to Christ, “Now what?” His answer was simple, “Wait.”
How good are you at waiting? Are you like me who’s always got something going on? Always moving, never sitting still long enough for any dust to settle. Did you know that God said “Be still and know that I am God” (Ps 36:10a). What does that mean, ‘be still?’ Does it really mean to stop and become motionless? Does it mean to stop doing? Have you ever noticed how easy it is to be still in the woods when you’re watching that big buck, but when it comes to God, not so much? Why is that? Perhaps, it’s because we like to be in control and being still is about waiting and waiting seems so unproductive.
If you’re in that place that you’re asking “Now what?” perhaps it’s a good time to just sit and wait and do nothing. That’s right, nothing! Wait and listen. Listen for wisdom, guidance, and a sure path forward before you take the next step. Remember the disciples? They waited and suddenly the room they were in was shaken with the might power of God. Could happen again! Think about it.

Local Women Create a Program of Original Works
The Hamilton-Gibson Women’s Project is preparing for their upcoming production of original works entitled WOMEN. This unique project, produced by Kacy Hagan of Wellsboro, brings together local writers, directors, actors and technicians – both experienced and new.
A total of 48 original short monologues and scenes were initially submitted, and ultimately 29 of them have been chosen for this project. Kacy says, “The writers, the directors, the actors, the production team – everyone has come together to share part of themselves and their experiences as women in this show.”
Dr. Baloch presented UAHS Golden Stethoscope Award
Bradford, PA / Olean, NY – Upper Allegheny Health System (UAHS), comprised of two campuses, Bradford Regional Medical Center (BRMC) and Olean General Hospital (OGH), presented the first 2024 Golden Stethoscope Award to Sarmad Baloch, MD. Dr. Baloch started at OGH in 2021 and is currently the medical director for the OGH hospitalist program.
The Golden Stethoscope Award is a result of nominations from employees and presented semi-annually to a physician who exhibits an exceptional level of professionalism, integrity, and teamwork in caring for patients and families, as well as interacting with hospital staff members and fellow physicians.
The award is presented to one physician throughout the entire Upper Allegheny Health System who meets the high standard of providing high quality patient care. Dr. Baloch’s multiple nominations focused on his well-rounded skillset of being patient-focused, a team player across all levels of the organization, and his ability to effectively lead.
PITT-BRADFORD VOCAL ARTS ENSEMBLE TO PERFORM GOSPEL-THEMED CONCERT
BRADFORD, Pa. – The University of Pittsburgh at Bradford Vocal Arts Ensemble will perform a selection of gospel music in concert at noon April 2 in the Harriett B. Wick Chapel.
The concert is free and open to the public.
“The gospel theme actually happened by accident,” said Regina Gabriel, director and instructor of music at Pitt-Bradford. “Many of my singers wanted to do solos this semester, so I looked for pieces that would give them that opportunity.”
She also wanted to take advantage of the instrumental skills of students in the group.
Reader Warns of New Computer Scam
IMPORTANT COMPUTER SCAM FYI: Today when I used my laptop and opened my web browser, a pop-up from “Windows Defender Security” alerted of a possible identity theft breach and said they locked my laptop for my protection. There was a phone number to call the Windows identity theft team. (Staples actually did install Windows Defender Security on my laptop when I bought it, so I thought this may be legitimate.)
I was unable to click out of the alert and the laptop did appear frozen. DO NOT CALL THIS NUMBER, IF THIS HAPPENS TO YOU!
I called the Staples Protection Plan IT Dept and they have had over 100 calls today about this very pop up. There is an actual legitimate Windows Defender Security program, but it does not have a pop up stating to call a specific phone number, nor does it lock your computer. Hackers somehow created this pop up and you will need to shut down the computer immediately.
I was also advised to change all of our pswds for accounts that had personal info, financial or health info immediately. I need to check financial accnts daily for a while and if I see any suspicious charges on any of our accnts, then I need to make a police report for possible identity theft.
I did not receive any reports from our McAfee Virus Protection, or Identity Theft Protection, so hoping that our info was not compromised.
I just wanted to make others aware of this new computer scam.
First quarter Nightingale Award presented to Ameis
OLEAN, NY – Upper Allegheny Health System (UAHS), the healthcare system consisting of Bradford Regional Medical Center (BRMC) and Olean General Hospital (OGH), presented Ashley Ameis, RN, the first quarter Nightingale Award. A recent Alfred State College graduate, Ameis joined OGH in June 2023 and is currently a nurse in the acute care department.
“Ashley is the most considerate and compassionate nurse to join UAHS. She takes the extra time to care for her patients entirely and demonstrates a kindness to the highest degree. Ashley extends her courageousness and empathy to other staff members both clinical and non-clinical,” said her nomination. “Ashley is the epitome of what a nurse is. Co-workers are grateful to work alongside her and patients are fortunate to have her for their care.”
Auditions Continue for “Once Upon A Crime, The Trial of Goldilocks”
Hamilton-Gibson Productions has started auditioning for 15 cast members of all ages and genders to play many of our best-loved fairy tale characters in the upcoming production of the comedy, Once Upon A Crime, The Trial of Goldilocks, by Flip Kobler and Cindy Marcus.Performances will take place June 13 – 16 during the Laurel Festival at The Warehouse Theater in Wellsboro.
Once Upon A Crime is a hilarious fairy-tale courtroom play packed with characters we all know and love. Both experienced performers and newcomers are encouraged to attend. The show is family-friendly and is a great opportunity for both kids and adults. Audition materials are provided so there is no need to prepare – just show up!
