“Sweet April Showers Do Bring May Flowers” is the theme for a Ladies Day Out brunch at Eddie’s On Main, from 11:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 27th.  This event is a fundraiser to benefit The Pastor Randy Headley Memorial Award for Community Service.  The awards are presented to PAHS students at the Annual Awards Assembly.  Tickets are $20 and are available at Eddie’s on Main or call/text Kimball Nelson (814-598-0235) HHP Community Service Partners. 

Reserve now as limited tickets are available.  In addition to the brunch, there will be wine tasting with Little Mountain Winery and music by Dana Daisley Acoustic.  A Silent Auction featuring Curated Collectables from Aunt Helen, Jewelry, Gift Baskets and Custom Artisan items.  There will also be raffles and door prizes.  Cash donations will be accepted payable to Headley’s Headliners.

City of Olean Firefighters responded to a report of a structure fire at 623 Seneca Avenue in Olean early Wednesday morning. Firefighters received the alarm at 0236am. Engine 41 arrived within 4 minutes of the alarm and found heavy fire in the rear of the structure. 1 3/4″ handline was pulled to begin extinguishing the blaze. Firefighters performed a search of the structure for any residents still inside, however all were evacuated prior to firefighters arrival. Fire had followed the balloon frame construction through the second floor and into the attic. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze. There was a report that one occupant did seek medical attention and was transported to Olean General Hospital by Trans AM Ambulance. No firefighters were injured. City of Olean Fire Investigators are on the scene working to determine a cause of this fire.

We are pleased to recognize Logan Hurlburt from Smethport High School is our Student of the Week! Logan has been a dedicated member of Mr. Miller’s Building Construction Occupations Class at Seneca Highlands CTC for three years, where he has consistently demonstrated hard work, a positive attitude, and exceptional focus.

Dale L. “Uncle Dale” Southard, 66, of Main St. passed away on Sunday (April 21st, 2024).

Born on October 29, 1957 he was the son of Lewis F. and Catherine Baker Southard.  He was a 1975 graduate of Otto Eldred High School and then attended Toni and Guy Barber’s school in Erie, Pa. 

Dale was a life long resident in Eldred and owned and operated Dale’s Barber Styling since 1986.  He was a drummer in several local bands including Imagine, Tradewind, Shuffle, and Alabama Rain. He also played softball for “Skeeters Inn” and “The Dukes”

Dale was also an avid Buffalo Bills fan.  Most of all, he was a great uncle to everyone and loved spending Wednesdays and Sundays at his sisters house with family.  He was affectionately known as “Floyd the Barber” by all the locals.

The 2024 Wine Walk has been deemed a big success by organizers.  This year’s participants included the Moose Family Center with registration; Allegheny Cellars Winery at Baxter Hardware, LLC; Uncle D’s Sassy Glass Winery at Rustic Roots; Twisted Vine Winery at Olson-Tenglund, Inc.; Laurel Mountain Winery at Trail’s End Realty; Brokenstraw Valley Winery at Mid-Town Motel; Flickerwood Wine Cellars at Mountain Laurel Federal Credit Union; Bear Creek Wines at A Stitch in Time;  Mountain Winery at Neighborhood School of Dance; Sugar Bush Winery at Karen’s Hairstyling Salon; Triple Nickel Distillery at GLC; and The Winery at Wilcox at Port Notary Service and Kim Nelson HHP.  The Port Allegany Senior Center will benefit from the proceeds of the 2024 Wine Walk. 

The Port Allegany Music Department will present the 2024 Spring Showcase on Friday, April 26 at PAHS.  Show time is 7:00 p.m.  Tickets are $3 and available at the door.  Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.  There is first come, first serve seating.  The Showcase will feature bands, jokes, original compositions and more!!  Pictured are three of the Showcase performers – Isaac Barber,  Henry Troupe and Amber Funk,  all members of the Class of 2024.  The program is under the direction of high school vocal instructor Rachael Karwowski.

When the Pennsylvania College of Technology men’s golf team won the United East Championship last spring, coach Rob Lytle called it a “great, great tune-up because I believe we’ll be doing this again, year after year.”

After one of the most competitive fall and spring seasons in program history on some of the most challenging courses several of his players have experienced, Lytle has his team primed and ready for this Saturday and Sunday’s UE Championship at Philmont Country Club in Huntingdon, where the winner also earns an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Championship.

The Bradford Area Chamber of Commerce will hold the Annual Meeting & Award Presentation on May 2 at the Pennhills Club.  The event includes the presentation of 5 annual awards to the Bradford Community.  The five awards include: Exemplary Business, Community & Spirit, Director’s Award, Small Business and Legacy Award. 

We are excited to announce this year’s award recipients.  Exemplary Business Award will go to the McKean County Community Foundation; Small Business Award will go to Small Town Girl Boutique; Community & Spirit will go to the Bradford Friendship Table; Director’s Award will go to Pure Tech LLC and Legacy Award will go to Episcopal Church of the Ascension.

Gwenyth Mitchell, a senior from Portville High School, has been chosen to attend this year’s Students Inside Albany program sponsored by the League of Women Voters of New York State Education Foundation, Inc. This long standing annual Students Inside Albany program will take place from May 19-22, 2024 and will bring 60 students from across the state to Albany to get a first-hand education about their state government. The program is designed to increase high school students’ awareness of their responsibility in representative government and provide information about the tools necessary for meeting that responsibility.

While at the conference, students will join their peers in a hands-on learning experience about how state government works. Students will participate in a series of interactive lectures on topics such as the state budget process, the role of lobbyists in the legislative process, citizen rights to access government information, the role of media in politics, and the move to reform state government. While in Albany, the students will have an opportunity to tour the state’s Capitol. The highlight for most students is the opportunity to shadow their Senators and their Assemblymembers for an afternoon attending session on the Chamber floors.

Christopher W.  “Chris” Lane

Chris W. Lane, 67, of Russell, PA, died on Monday April 22, 2024, in his home after an extended illness.

Family will receive friends on Friday April 26, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM in the Donald E. Lewis Funeral Home Inc., 304 East Street Warren, PA.

Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 1:30 pm in St. Joseph R.C. Church, 600 Pennsylvania Ave., West, Warren, PA. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. A complete obituary will be published when it’s available.

David L. DeLullo, Jr., 70, of Silver Creek Road, St. Marys, passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 23, 2024, with his family by his side.
