Rew, Smethport Dispatched For Car into a House Crash on Rt. 46
At 7:39 PM on Wednesday, Rew Fire Dept. & Smethport ambulance dispatched to 2685 Route 46 for a passenger vehicle into an occupied house.
2 occupants of the vehicle are self extricated. Occupants of house have evacuated the home which has severe damage.
Unknown injuries. Smethport also asked to respond.
McKean County Businesses & Municipalities To Get $1.5 Million in Grants
The McKean County Commissioners, at their December 13 bi-monthly meeting, approved grant awards for McKean County Small Businesses and Municipalities utilizing over $1.5 million dollars of the County’s American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) allocation.
“We are pleased that we can assist small businesses and our municipalities with funds in this time of economic recovery and stabilization.” Said Commissioner Tom Kreiner. “McKean County is pleased to offer financial resources to support projects that address the needs of our local communities.”
The McKean County Small Business Recovery Grants and the Municipal Recovery Grants provide a one-time infusion of financial resources to meet pandemic recovery needs and, moving forward, to rebuild the county economy.
A total of $130,000 has been awarded to sixteen McKean County small businesses. Grant amounts range in size from $5,000 to $10,000. “The focus of the small business recovery grant program is not merely providing funds to businesses for revenue loss or to cover regular operating costs, but to invest in projects that can demonstrate measurable, sustainable, collaborative, and lasting improvements”, added Commissioner Carol Duffy. “Most impressive is that the business owners who were awarded grants will be investing an additional $314,463 into the selected projects.”
Rose M. Scutella, 94, of Pinecrest Manor, formerly of Ridgway, PA
Rose M. Scutella, 94, of Pinecrest Manor, formerly of Ridgway, passed away Tuesday, December 13, 2022 at Pinecrest Manor.
She was born September 20, 1928 in Kane, PA, daughter of the late Peter and Mary (Migliazzo) Avenali. She was a lifelong resident of the area and a graduate of Kane High School. She was a dedicated employee of Sylvania for close to 40 years, where she retired.
On May 10, 1947, in St. Callistus Church, she married the late, Pasquale “Pat” Scutella, Jr., who preceded her in death on July 28, 2014.
Rose is survived by her son, John Scutella and his wife, Lori, of St. Marys; two grandchildren: Brandon Scutella (Shauna) of St. Marys and Daniel Scutella (Jilissa) of Curwensville; and five great-grandchildren: Aiden, Isaac, Wrett, Mack, and Kolby Scutella.
Along with her husband and parents, Rose was preceded in death by a daughter in infancy; two sisters: Angie Gabriel and Jenny Polinski; and a brother, John Migliazzo. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was a member of the St. Leo’s Catholic Church. Rose was a hard worker and enjoyed her work but she also found time to enjoy her flower and vegetable gardens and her years spent in Florida with her husband during retirement. She was a kind-hearted person who made time for anyone and befriended many during her years at Pinecrest Manor. Rose was a tremendous cook and loved to bake. Nothing brought her more joy than her family, especially her grandchildren.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, December 17, 2022 at 11:00 AM in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church with the Rev. Thomas More Sikora, OSB, Pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Parklawn Memorial Gardens.
There will be no visitation.

William R. “Bill” Heitzenrater, age 74, of DuBois, PA
William R. “Bill” Heitzenrater, age 74, of DuBois, PA died Tuesday, December 13, 2022 at his home.
Born on July 3, 1948 in Punxsutawney, PA, he was the son of the late H. Vaughn and J. Ethel (Bodenhorn) Heitzenrater.
On April 20, 1968 he married Judith “Judy” (Leksell) Heitzenrater. She survives.
Bill was a 1966 graduate of Punxsutawney High School. Upon graduating from Penn State University, DuBois with an Electrical and Electronic Technology Associate Degree, he went to work for Bell of PA in Harrisburg, working 13 years in the Engineering Circuit Layout Bureau. In 1981 he transferred to Outside Facilities Engineering in DuBois until his retirement in 2002.
Bill served for six years with the United States Army Reserve, 316th Station Hospital as a medical corpsman, achieving the rank of SP5. He was also an adult leader with the Boy Scouts of America for 18 years.
In addition to his wife, Bill is survived by two children; Christina (Mike) Delp of Coudersport, PA and Richard Heitzenrater of Corpus Cristi, TX, three grandchildren; Noah and Nash Delp and Kylie Heitzenrater, one sister Yvonne (Laverne) Thompson of Big Run, PA and one brother Charles Heitzenrater of Erie, PA.
He was preceded in death by three brothers; Gene, Bob and Paul Heitzenrater and one sister; Wanda Freas.
There will be no public visitation. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, December 27, 2022 at 1 PM from Sabula United Methodist Church with Pastor Butch Brunner officiating.

Judith E. “Judy” Chamberlin, 77, of Main Street, Kersey, PA passed away on Monday evening, December 12, 2022, at Penn Highlands DuBois following a brief illness.
She was born on June 21, 1945 in St. Marys, PA, a daughter of the late Albert and Margaret Seelye Sarginger.
On June 26, 1965, at Queen of the World Church, she married William Chamberlin, who survives. Together they shared more than 57 years of love, laughter, and happiness.
Judith was a graduate of St. Marys High School and was Catholic by faith. She enjoyed puzzle books and baking. She was a talented quilter who also enjoyed embroidering, always delighting in making beautiful items for her family. Together with her husband, Judy loved going for a nice, quiet country ride, taking in the scenery and wildlife. She also loved looking at Mountain Laurel and picnics at Parker Dam.
In addition to her husband of more than 57 years, William Chamberlin, she is survived by 5 children; Van (Tami) Chamberlin of Wilcox, Ron (Carol) Chamberlin of Kersey, Donna (Andy) Rettger of Yamhill, OR, Melissa (Michael) Himes of Brockport, and Glenda (Scott Mawn) Chamberlin of St. Marys; and by 10 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by six siblings; JoAnn (Mark) Dawson of TX, Nancie (David) Anderson of Johnsonburg, Dave (Carol) Sarginger of VA, Dorothy (Jim) Harkenrider of NY, Debbie (Jim) Assalone of Weedville, and Gloria Sarginger of St. Marys, as well as by numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Judy was preceded in death by a sister; Margaret Sarginger.
A Memorial Service for Judith E. Chamberlin will be held on Friday, January 6, 2023 at 11:00 AM at Krise Funeral Home, 339 Main Street, Kersey, PA 15846.
Burial will be in Parklawn Memorial Gardens.

Gertrude Arlene Yaple, 87, of Warren, PA
Gertrude Arlene Yaple, wife, mother, and longtime volunteer for faith-based organizations in Warren, died in her sleep on Monday, December 12, 2022, at the Warren Manor Nursing Home. She was 87.
She was born July 8, 1935, the second youngest of 11 children of Ruth (Williams) Green and Elwyn Green. She was raised in Erie, Pa., and was a 1953 graduate of Harbor creek High School. In 1961 she married James J. Yaple in Erie, and they moved to Lancaster in 1963 and to York, Pa., two years later. She has lived in Warren since 1972, where she had served as a Welcome Wagon volunteer and was involved with her husband in Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. She was also deeply involved with Praise Fellowship Church from its inception when services were held in a home to construction of the church in Russell, Pa.
Gertrude was active many years ago in A.A., where she ultimately supported others in Warren area through the 12-step program. She later used those skills when she became a “house mom” volunteering at the House of Hope women’s shelter in Warren. She lived full-time at the House of Hope from 2016 to 2022, helping to monitor and support the residents who were transitioning a return to society after incarceration.
Gertrude leaves a daughter, Marie A. Yaple of Erie; three sons, David C. Yaple of Danielsville, Ga., Michael S. Yaple of Newtown, Pa., and Craig E. Yaple of Warren; a daughter in law, Diane Yaple of Newtown; four grandchildren, Clover Reber of Erie, Leif Yaple of Athens, Ga., Jesse Yaple of Gainesville, Ga., and Ava Yaple of Newtown; and three great-granddaughters. She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, James; three sisters, Dolores Ward, Elsie Lemke, and Ethel Nachman-Schuman; and seven brothers, Charles Green, Elwyn Green Jr., Harley Green, Norman Green, Robert Green, Theodore Green, and Walter green; and a grandson, Nathan Yaple of Warren.
Memorial services will be held at a future date and location to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gertrude’s name to the House of Hope, 316 Hazel St., Warren, Pa. Utopia Foods Recalls “Enoki Mushrooms” Because of Possible Health Risk
Utopia Foods Inc of Glendale, NY, is recalling its 200g packages of “Enoki Mushrooms”, imported from China and distributed nationwide in the US, because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
The recalled “Enoki Mushrooms” were distributed nationwide in produce wholesale companies.
The product comes in a 200g, clear and blue plastic package with brand name “Utopia” and barcode# 8928918610017 marked on the packaging.
Voluntary Recall of Three Detect Covid-19 Test Lots
Detect, Inc. is voluntarily recalling specific lots of the Detect Covid-19 Test™, our molecular, over-the-counter test used to identify SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes Covid-19) in self-collected nasal swabs. The recall affects a total of 11,102 tests shipped to customers from July 26th, 2022 through August 26th, 2022. The test was granted Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on October 28, 2021.
There is an increased chance that the tests from the lot numbers listed below may give false negative results. Detect has conducted a thorough investigation to identify this issue and has made the decision to conduct a voluntary recall for these lots. To date, Detect has not received any reports of false negative results related to the affected lots and is issuing this recall out of an abundance of caution. The reliability of positive test results is not affected.

Two Inmates Busted For Taking Drugs Into McKean County Jail
(SMETHPORT, Pennsylvania): District Attorney Stephanie L. Vettenburg-Shaffer reports that two separate inmates have been charged with taking controlled substances into the McKean County Jail following their sentencings on unrelated charges.
By two separate criminal complaints filed on December 13, 2022, County Detective Linda Close has charged Francis Kramer with 1 count of Contraband (Felony 2) and Possession of a Controlled Substance (Misdemeanor). Detective Close has also charged Jose Robinson with 1 count of Contraband and Possession of a Controlled Substance.
KRAMER appeared before the Honorable Christopher G. Hauser for a sentencing hearing on November 23, 2022 for charges including Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Police Officer and Endangering the Welfare of a Child. The Judge ordered him to appear at the McKean County Jail on November 25, 2022 to commence his sentencing. The criminal complaint alleges that he was placed in a “dry” cell following his processing at the jail and, three days later, a controlled substance was found in a plastic baggie.
ROBINSON was sentenced by the Honorable John H. Pavlock on December 1, 2022 on unrelated drug charges and was taken to the jail that same day following his sentence. The criminal complaint alleges that he brought contraband in the form of a controlled substance when he came into the jail.
Both KRAMER and ROBINSON were arraigned by Magisterial District Judge William Todd who set bail at $10,000 and scheduled their central court/preliminary hearings for December 22, 2022.
Shirley M. Kenyon, age 81, of Tioga, PA
Shirley M. Kenyon, age 81, of Tioga, PA passed away at her daughter’s home in Washington, PA on Sunday, December 11, 2022.
Born February 15, 1941 in Farmington Twp., she was the daughter of the late Kenneth and Lucy (Rude) Davis.
Shirley is a retired decorator from Corning, Inc. World Kitchen. She loved knitting, craft shows, gardening, birds and enjoying nature. She was always helping out a neighbor or friend.
Shirley is survived by her daughters, Carol and Bill Bissinger of Bloomsburg, Bobbi Jo and David Cain of Lawrenceville and Joy Kenyon and her fiance, Justin Benack of Washington, PA; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ross Kenyon; her daughter, Deborah Draper; her son, William Joseph Kenyon; three sisters, Marion Fish, Pauline Boom and Alta May Smith and a brother, Howard Davis.

Mary L. Brooks, age 87 of Elkland, PA passed away on Saturday, December 10, 2022 at Arnot Ogden Medical Center in Elmira, NY.
Born in Blossburg, PA on January 14, 1935, she was a daughter to the late Wilber and Georgia (Saunders) Buck. In 1950, Mary married LaVern Brooks and they spent many loving years together until his passing on September 6, 1998.
Mary enjoyed working, sewing, cooking, gardening and canning her fresh vegetables. She also loved going to the lake with her family where they would kayak, fish or go boating.
Mary is survived by her children; Arnold (Joanne) Brooks of Corning, NY, Faron Brooks of Mansfield, PA, LaVon Jones of Bath, NY, Mary (Timothy) Hopkins of Caneadea, NY and Collette (Brian) Smith of Lindley, NY; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
Mary was preceded in death by both her parents; her loving husband, LaVern; two sons, Pat Allen Brooks and Sheldon LaVern Brooks; and grandson, Shawn Brooks.
There will be no services held per Mary’s wishes.

Donald D. Kelley, 74, of Wolverine Ave., Erie, Pa
Erie, Pa—Donald D. Kelley, 74, of Wolverine Ave., passed away on Monday (December 12th, 2022) at home surrounded by his family.
Born January 18th, 1948 in Olean he was a son of Ivan D. and Imogene Phipps Kelley.
Mr. Kelley was a 1965 graduate of Otto-Eldred Highschool. He was a veteran, having served with the US Army from 1967 to 1969 as a military policeman.
Following his military service he was employed for over 36 years by Bell of Pennsylvania, which later became Verizon, as an install and repair technician prior to his retirement in 2002.
Donald was a member of the Telephone Pioneers and had enjoyed rollerblading and bicycling, as well as doing crafts and crossword puzzles.
Surviving are 2 sons, Brian (Ashley) Kelley of Bradford, and Kevin (Tiffany) Kelley of Wilton, NY; five grandchildren, Brendon and Brett, Timothy and Ryenn, and Jackson; and one brother, Robert Kelley of Farmers Valley; and one sister, Debra Kelley of Eldred; and a great grand daughter Leighanne.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister, Jean Ann Rice, and a brother in law, Roger Rice; and a sister in law, Kelly Backus Kelley.
Friends may call on Sunday (December 18th, 2022) at the Frame Funeral Home, Eldred from 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm, at which time funeral services will be held. Burial will follow in Lamphier Cemetery, Eldred.
Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Post 887 of Eldred Honor Guard following the funeral service on Sunday.

Wellsville Police arrested Kegin R. Sweet, age 19 of Wellsville charging him with Harassment 2nd. The charge stems from an incident that took place on Madison Street on November 8th. Sweet was processed and arraigned before Associate Wellsville Village Justice Walsh. Sweet was released and is due back in Wellsville Village Court on January 17th at 4:30 pm.

Acting 101: Learn the Fundamentals of Acting
Calling all thespians! So you’ve never acted before but would love to? Come learn the essential skills needed to be on the stage. Even if you are not a novice, this is an excellent opportunity to refresh those skills and maybe learn something new to add to your repertoire, such as improvisation or different techniques. The local theatrical group, Potter-McKean Players, has plans to offer productions in the upcoming months. This course will teach you what you need to be ready for those auditions.
This 4-part course will be taught by local director Paul Herzig and actor Jared Empson, of Eliot Ness Fest fame. The classes will take place on Tuesdays, January 10 – January 31, 2023 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the Education Council’s Coudersport office. The cost of the course is $25 per person. Helen V. Edgreen, 100, of Fairport, NY, formerly of Port Allegany, PA
Helen V. Edgreen, 100, of Fairport, NY, formerly of Port Allegany, PA passed away Sunday (Dec. 11, 2022) in Crest Manor Nursing Home, Fairport, NY.
She was born September 6, 1922, a daughter of Maude “Mae” Groom Gaines. On January 11, 1941, in Olean, NY, she married Walter “Squawk” Edgreen, who died June 24, 2000.
Helen was a resident of the area for many years, graduating from Olean High School, Class of 1940. She worked at K-Bar Knives and later was a bus driver for Bowen Bus Co., Port Allegany, before she retired.
She was an avid reader who enjoyed sewing and knitting. She also loved to bake.
Surviving is a daughter, Venetta M. “Vee” (Daniel) Nelson of Rochester, NY; a son, Steven W. Edgreen of Norfolk, VA; five grandchildren: Craig (Diane) Nelson, Kirk (Christine) Nelson, Kristin (William) MacDonald, Kimberly Edgreen, and Mathew Edgreen; five great-grandchildren: Collin and Cassidy Nelson, Larissa, Lily, and Liam MacDonald.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Walter, and a baby son, Leslie W. Edgreen.
Friends will be received from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday (Dec. 18, 2022) in the Switzer Funeral Home, Port Allegany, where a funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. with Rev. Garen Smith, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, Port Allegany, officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Port Allegany.

Sandra L. “Sandy” Freer, 84, of Austin, PA
Sandra L. “Sandy” Freer of Austin, PA passed away on Tuesday, December 13th, 2022 surrounded by her loving family in the comfort of her home. Sandy, a lifelong resident of Austin, was born to Myrtle and William Enstrom on March 31st, 1937. After the passing of her father she was raised by her mother Myrtle and her stepfather Alton “Bud” Crosby along with her sister, Karen.
Sandy graduated from Austin Area High School in 1954. A proud veteran she served in the United States Air Force from 1955-1957.
On July 22nd, 1960 she married John D. Freer in Austin, PA. Sandy, a homemaker, was a loving and devoted wife and she and John celebrated 62 beautiful years of marriage. Together they enjoyed a lifetime of happiness camping, enjoying the outdoors, and watching their family grow. A lover of animals, especially dogs, she and John adopted numerous pets through various pet rescues.
Known as “Oonnee” in her family Sandy was a collector of teddy bears which she later enjoyed passing on to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. These items remain treasured memorabilia of a loving mother and grandmother.
Anyone that knew Sandy knew that she was a great cook and an avid baker often spending days preparing numerous dishes and desserts for family gatherings and holidays. She was especially known for her cookies, pies, and cakes which filled the house with incredibly delicious smells; often sending second helpings home with her family to be happily enjoyed later. Her love of cooking and baking continued well into her final years with her knowledge and recipes passed on to those she loved.
To say she will be greatly missed is an understatement.
In addition to her parents she is predeceased by her sister Karen as well as many aunts and uncles.
Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, Robert Freer and Alton “Buddy” (Marea) Freer, along with five grandchildren: Eryn (Eric) Fiebig, Heather (Michael) Postlewait, Casey (Klaus) Puck, Amanda (Greg) Wehler, and Hunter (Kelsee) Freer.
Along with her children and grandchildren she was also a wonderful great-grandmother and great-great grandmother to Aedrik and Axeton Fiebig, Pam Crants and Willie Postlewait, Claudia Puck, Madison and Abel Langfitt, Olivia Wehler, and Sutton and Micha Crants.
She is also remembered by her niece Kristen Hynds and nephew Kurt Hynds along with their families.
There will be no public visitation or funeral. A private family memorial will be held at the family’s convenience.
Memorial donations may be made in Sandy’s name to the Austin Fire Department, PO Box 328, Austin, PA 16720 and/or Teachers Pet Rescue, 19 Blackberry Lane, Coudersport, PA 16915.
Sandy’s family has entrusted her care and cremation arrangements to Kevin J. Dusenbury, funeral director/owner of the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse.

Robert A. “Bob” Brewer, 71, of Bolivar, NY, formerly of Cuba, NY,
“beloved husband, father, grandfather, and brother”
BOLIVAR, N.Y.—Robert A. “Bob” Brewer, 71, of Bolivar, NY, a former longtime resident of Cuba, NY, passed away unexpectedly in his home on Friday, December 9, 2022.
Born on Friday, July 27, 1951 in Olean, he was a son of Robert W. and Laura M. McKeel Brewer. On March 31, 1973 in Little Genesee, he married Maureen Mesler.
Bob attended Oswayo Valley High School in Shinglehouse. He was employed by the former Dresser-Clark in Olean until a work related injury forced him to retire.
Bob liked to fish and enjoyed tinkering on lawn mowers.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife; a son, Matthew Brewer of Bolivar; a granddaughter, Brianna Brewer of Friendship; two sisters, Susan A. (Victor) Safford of Port Allegany and Terri VanWhy of Shinglehouse; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Bob was predeceased by a son, Chad Brewer; a brother, Steven William Brewer; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
In keeping with Bob’s wishes, there will be no public visitation or funeral services.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
