It Takes a Village to be “Amazing” 

The production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, presented by Hamilton-Gibson Productions and opening on Friday, July 5th, truly demonstrates the adage, “It takes a village.” The community putting it all together includes a wide range of musicians, artists, actors, seamstresses, parents, truck drivers, poster-hanger-uppers and more. 

The incredible backdrops have been created by local graphic artist Tim Crane (www.TimothyPaul.Design.) You may have seen the wonderful backdrops that Tim created for the production of Elephant’s Graveyard at the Coolidge Theatre last year. For this production, the drops are in the style of artist Marc Chagall. Chagall, a Jewish painter and stained-glass window creator, brought his heritage and whimsy to his dance-like work. As in the Elephant’s Graveyard drops, Tim has been able to find just the right colors and style for Joseph. He’s a remarkable artist.

In the loving memory of Anne McCleary, the members of North County Voices have established the Anne McCleary Piano Scholarship. Anne was a beloved friend, a gifted musician and an accomplished piano accompanist. She served as the accompanist for the North Country Voices for eighteen years.

Anne was also a valued member of our community, serving as a dedicated church musician. The piano scholarship has been established to be awarded to a Potter County high school graduate who is pursuing a career in music with piano as the student’s major instrument.

OLEAN, NY – The Olean General Hospital Foundation (OGHF) held its fourteenth annual Golf to Fight Cancer golf tournament on May 22 at the Bartlett Country Club. This year’s event raised $48,000 for cancer care for the region. The annual golf Tournament has aggregated over $670,000 with proceeds helping Olean General Hospital (OGH) purchase breast cancer surgical equipment, endoscopy instruments and equipment at the hospital’s Mildred Milliman Radiation Medicine Center, including upgrades to the linear accelerator, the device used for radiation oncology.

Liliana, a recent graduate of Manheim Township High School in Lancaster County, was awarded a $3,000 educational scholarship and will spend time during the next year at Wellsboro events. She was chosen from a field of 29 candidates representing high schools from across the state.
 

​Montoursville, PA – Motorists are advised a two-year construction project continues on Route 6 and Main Street (Route 2005) in Tioga County.

The Week of Monday, June 24
The contractor will continue rehabilitation work on the bridge that carries Route 6 over the Tioga River. Work includes repair of the sub-structure, deck repairs, and epoxy overlay.

Long-Term Detour
Route 6 will remain closed to westbound traffic at the intersection of Main Street.

Weekend in the Wilds is set for July 5-7 in Cameron County.  The event organized by the Cameron County Chamber of Commerce coordinates activities for each day and works with businesses and non-profits to provide a weekend filled with events.

The event kicks off Friday July 5 when the Barbara Moscato Brown Memorial Library opens its doors for the annual used book sale.  The sale continues through Saturday afternoon.  Friday night there will be a totally FREE event thanks to several sponsors!  PHASER will perform on the stage starting at 5pm.  The music is sponsored by the Cameron County Community Chest.  Free hot dogs (limit 100) can be roasted over the fire ring . 

Colonel Christopher Paris, Commissioner of the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP), today commended three employees with the department’s Aviation Maintenance Unit and the supervisor of the Southeast Computer Crime Task Force Unit after all received recognition for their exemplary public service as recipients of the Governor’s Awards for Excellence.

“I am proud of the outstanding initiative and leadership shown by these four remarkable individuals, the dedication and commitment with which they carry out their jobs, and the valuable service they provide to the people of Pennsylvania,” Colonel Paris said. “It is an honor to serve with them.”

Johnsonburg, Pa.: “Big Jim” Pennington, Sr., of Johnsonburg was a ‘mainstay’ of the Rolfe Beagle Club in northern Elk County for almost 60 years of the club’s 78 years of existence.  “Big Jim” was always the Marshal at the club’s AKC Licensed Beagle Trials for decades.  Dog handlers learned early on to listen when “Big Jim” gave instruction.

“Big Jim” earned his nickname not only because he was the senior or big Jim in the family, but he also had huge muscles from working his outdoor job.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced the following schedule of maintenance activities in Potter County the week of June 24. PennDOT performs year-round maintenance in its mission to provide a safe, efficient transportation system, and the scope of work in Potter County for the coming week is as follows:

Bridge Maintenance & Cleaning

• Route 3002 (Cowley Hill Road) spanning the West Branch of Cowley Run. Monday, June 24, through Thursday, June 27. This work takes place off the roadway and has minimal, if any, traffic impact.

Pennsylvania has some of the oldest bridges in the country, with an age of more than 50 years on average. Preventive maintenance is vital in extending the life of the structures. As such, PennDOT maintenance crews perform some bridge deck patching and structural repairs.

Manual Patching

• Route 244 (Oswayo Road/Ellisburg Road) between Coudersport Pike and the Pennsylvania-New York border. Monday, June 24, through Friday, June 28. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
• Route 4016 (Irish Settlement Road) between Eleven Mille Road and Tormey Road.  Monday, June 24, through Friday, June 28. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
• Route 4014 (Plank Road) between Honeoye Road and Eleven Mile Road. Monday, June 24, through Friday, June 28. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

Most permanent pothole patching is completed in the spring/summer when temperatures stay consistently above freezing. If maintenance crews were not repairing potholes, the road surface would break up further and require more expensive corrective measures.

Grading & Reshaping

• Route 4025 (Brizzie Hollow Road) between Hemlock Hollow Road and Eleven Mile Road. Monday, June 24, through Thursday, June 27. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
• Route 4027 (Ore Bed Run Road) between Brizzie Hollow Road and Genesee Township. Monday, June 24, through Thursday, June 27. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
• Route 1009 (Pusher Siding Road) in Ulysses Township. Monday, June 24, through Thursday, June 27. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

Grading and reshaping of unpaved roads is necessary to remove buildup along the shoulder area from shifting material. It also removes rutting and corrugations from the roadway and reestablishes the crown in the roadway surface. Other benefits to this maintenance activity include proper drainage and dust control.

Pipe Replacing & Cleaning

• Route 4021 (Honeoye Road) between Shinglehouse and the Pennsylvania-New York border. Tuesday, June 25, through Friday, June 28. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
• Route 144 (Branch Road/Germania Road) between Galeton and Carter Camp Road. Monday, June 24, through Thursday, June 27. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

Pipe replacement and cleaning are essential in maintaining water flow around state roadways. Controlling water flow is one of the most important aspects of maintaining pavements. Uncontrolled water flow will damage both the pavement surface and the area under the pavement, which causes deterioration across the length of the pipe.

Side Dozing

• Route 1011 (Hickox-Ulysses Road) between Academy Street and Route 49. Monday, June 24, through Thursday, June 27. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

Side dozing removes excess material from beneath guide rail areas, which improves drainage and allows water to sheet flow off the roadway. Side dozing is a crucial highway maintenance operation because when drainage systems do not function properly, water collects on the road, weakens pavement, accelerates the formation of potholes, and creates the potential for icing conditions in the winter months.

Signing

• Various routes throughout the county. Monday, June 24, through Friday, June 28. This work takes place off the roadway and has minimal, if any, traffic impact.

Signs are the most prominent way PennDOT communicates roadway safety and other information to our customers. County maintenance organizations have crews responsible for installing and repairing signage along state roads and reviewing installed signs to determine if replacements are needed. Reasons for replacing a sign include age, vandalism, or damage.

Vegetation Management

• Route 872 (Inez Road/Costello Avenue/Sinnemahoning Road) between Route 6 in Coudersport and the Potter-Cameron County Line. Monday, June 24, through Friday, June 28. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
• Route 3001 (East Fork Road) between Sinnemahoning Road and Coudersport Pike. Monday, June 24, through Friday, June 28. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
• Route 3003 (First Fork Road) between Inez Road and Route 872 (Costello Road). Monday, June 24, through Friday, June 28. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
• Route 3006 (Ice Mine Road) between Grand Army of the Republic Highway and Coudersport Pike. Monday, June 24, through Friday, June 28. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.

Mowing, herbicide spraying, and selected tree thinning help maintain a safe roadway free of obstructing vegetation, improving visibility to spot signage, traffic control devices, and other motorists, bicyclists, pedestrians, and animals approaching the road. Additionally, a well-maintained roadside can improve drainage and prolong the life of the roadway.

This schedule is subject to change due to weather conditions, emergencies, or other unforeseen interruptions.

Sweeping

• Various routes throughout the county. Monday, June 24, through Friday, June 28. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours. PennDOT vehicles will occupy a single lane while this work takes place. Where passing is not permitted for extended lengths, the vehicles will leave the roadway periodically to allow queued traffic to pass and resume normal speeds.

Sweeping utilizes a mechanical broom attachment on a piece of mobile highway equipment used to remove loose debris from the roadway, improving safety and surface traction for motorists.

This schedule is subject to change due to weather conditions, emergencies, or other unforeseen interruptions.

The McKean County Community Foundation (MCCF) invites organizations that serve the Port Allegany area to apply for $1,400 in grant funding that is currently available from the Joe DeMott Port Allegany Community Development Fund (JDPACD). Applications are due by July 1, 2024. The application can be found on the MCCF website at https://mckeancountyfoundation.org/open-grants/

Grants from this fund are available to 501c3 organizations, schools, municipalities, or religious organizations that serve the public. The fund supports projects that encourage the arts, community development, education, environment, or health and social services within the Port Allegany School District.
