​Coudersport, Pennsylvania — Department of Conservation and Natural Resources State Parks Director John Hallas today announced the beginning of a construction project to reconfigure the entrances at Cherry Springs State Park in Potter County.

The project will create a new entrance to the public programming area of the park, eliminating issues caused by headlights at the current entry/exit point to the astronomy fields.

“This new, reconfigured entrance will change visitor flow into the park and help manage the larger crowds we are seeing at Cherry Springs,” Hallas said. “We are truly excited to create the best experience for all visitors to the park and thank the public in advance for its patience with this project.”

In addition to moving the park entrance, the project will construct a new contact station for information, lit visitor walkways, a programming pavilion, amphitheater, and new parking areas.​

“Part of the Master Plan for Cherry Springs was the relocation of the park entrance, and we are thankful to the local astronomers and park visitors who have helped the Bureau of State Parks determine what is best for all at Cherry Springs, especially when it comes to the dark sky viewing opportunities,” Hallas said.

The project is underway and will be completed in the fall.

No impacts are expected to fall events, though there may be programming modifications. Contact the park office or check the Cherry Springs web page for details.

The Potter County Farmers Market will be outdoors on the square across from the county jail, every Friday (weather permitting) from 12:30 pm to 4:30 pm. The next market will be this Friday, June 28th. Below is a list of who plans to be there and what they plan on bringing to the Market:

*  The outdoor market is held each Friday from May through October (weather permitting; on very rainy days, we will relocate into the Riley Gallery (if available)).  In November, the Farmers  Market goes indoors for the winter market.

 *  Market times have been established after many trial times over the years.  If you are not able to visit us and would like something particular from one of the vendors, please contact them directly.  They are willing to try to accommodate your request.

Program Title: Stream Study

Date: Saturday, June 29^th

Time: 3:00 – 4:30 PM

Location: Near Pavilion 3

Description: Join the park educator to look for macroinvertebrates, like stoneflies and crayfish, in the stream, along with learning their importance. Short talk followed by exploring the stream – expect to get wet so bring along water shoes, swimsuits, and a towel!

The Coudersport Senior Center is holding a hot dog meal fundraiser on Monday, July 1st beginning at 5:30 p.m. They are located at 200 West Chestnut Street in the former Calvary Baptist Church.

Your meal will include a hot dog, bag of chips and a drink for only $5.00. All profits go towards the Coudersport Senior Center’s operating expenses.

Then later in the evening, head over to the Coudersport Arboretum. Fickinger Funeral Home is sponsoring the Faith Night movie “Courageous”. This movie was previously scheduled for June 17^th, but cancelled due to inclement weather.

The movie is free of charge and popcorn is provided. The movie will start at dusk.

NOTICE! An Emergency Road Closure is planned to occur today, June 27, 2024 between the hours of 3pm and 5pm to replace down power lines that occurred from last evenings severe storms.

East Bound I-80 traffic will be detoured off at Exit 86 (Reynoldsville), with detour route Being SR 322 through Reynoldsville.

West Bound I-80 traffic will be detoured off at Exit 97 (DuBois/Brockway) and detoured SR 219 North to SR 28 South through Brockway.

Please use caution while traveling and consider using an alternate route. This is necessary to restore power in the affected area.

Pool Supervisor, Liz Valentine, has announced the first of the summer swim parties – a 1980’s Glow Night to be held July 1st from 6-10 p.m. Free hot chocolate, concession, first, second and third prizes for best 80’s costumes or swimwear, gift baskets for $1/chance, photo booth with props and limited supply of glow sticks.   Admission to this party is free to those who have a pool pass, $5 for others.  Proceeds will go to the pool fund.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Disney’s Beauty and the Beast JR. will be performed by the Elk County Council on the Arts’ (ECCOTA) Summer Theater Camp students this Friday, June 28 at the St. Marys Area High School Carpin Auditorium at 7PM. The 60-minute musical, designed for middle school-aged performers, is based on the 1994 Broadway production and Disney’s 1991 animated feature film. The Summer Theater Camp cast includes 58 students led by camp director Mr. Adam Brooks.

Johnsonburg, Pa.: Members of the Rolfe Beagle Club first noticed European Buckthorn at the club in the early 2000s.  “At first, it was just a shrub here or there,” said Jim Pennington, Jr, President of the club, “but then all of a sudden it was everywhere.  Closing in our travel lanes, pushing out our native shrubs, and creating competition for our native berries such as Juneberries, witherods, viburnums, and blueberries.  Nasty stuff.”

The Rolfe Beagle Club has an active wildlife and wood management program at the club, and immediately started to learn how best to manage the buckthorn starting to take over the club grounds.  The first thing club members learned was how detrimental buckthorn was to birds, warblers, and mammals that depend upon nutrition from berries to help them migrate, or make it through a tough winter.  Buckthorn, because it comes from Europe, lacks the same nutrition in its berries that have co-evolved with our native wildlife.  As such, warblers migrating through the club chow down on buckthorn berries and do not get adequate nutrition to complete their migration.  The same negative effect is multiplied for native birds and mammals that stay at the club year-round.
