Another Month Without a Completed Budget August has come and gone, and the Commonwealth is still without the completed budget necessary to meet critical funding needs. While the Senate advanced necessary budget legislation last week, majority House Democrats have made no move to call the House back into session because the resignation of one of their members leaves the House deadlocked at 101 Democrats and 101 Republicans. Due to the lack of Fiscal Code legislation that directs how budget money is to be spent, funding for some important programs cannot be driven out, including: support for hospitals, funding to combat and mitigate the effects of Avian Flu, and increased funding for emergency medical services. House Republicans have put forward a people-driven, future-focused set of ideas to truly help Pennsylvanians and address their concerns. It’s time to put politics behind us and move Pennsylvania forward. The House is currently scheduled to return to session on Tuesday, Sept. 26. Be Prepared! September is National Preparedness Month (NPM), and this year the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is placing special focus on ensuring older adults are prepared for natural disasters or other emergencies. According to the American Red Cross, there are several factors that make older adults more vulnerable after disasters, including their greater likelihood to suffer from chronic conditions and the need for associated medications; greater reliance on assistive devices such as walkers or glasses, as well as support from caregivers and others; and greater potential of social isolation. Click here for tips to help older adults prepare for emergencies. Aging Needs Assessment Survey In its ongoing work to gather feedback for development of its Master Plan for Older Adults, the state Department of Aging has launched a survey to help people share their experience on what it means to age in Pennsylvania. The survey is designed to capture the experience of older adults and adults with disabilities across a wide range of issues to ensure the statewide, 10-year plan can best address barriers in the service system. The goal is to ensure older Pennsylvanians and adults with disabilities have access to services that support improved health, well-being and quality of life. Which Way?
By
B.J. Knefley
Have you ever found yourself at a crossroads in life and wondered which way you were to go? Life is full of decisions. From the time we get up to the time we go to bed we’re making decisions. Some are major, but most are probably not. Yet it is often those little decisions that affect the course of life. Decisions that we make in the moment that seem insignificant can lead to disastrous consequences later. So how do we make the right ones? How do we know which is the right one?
I have made decisions in the moment that were only related to my mood at the time. Those decisions, based upon my feelings, were often inconsequential. But what happens when all of our decisions are based upon our mood or feelings in the moment? Compounded further, what happens when society operates out of their mood or feelings in the moment? Who is taking the time to ask the question, which way? Does anyone?
The strongest part of any building is the foundation. We can create a structure or even a life that looks great on the outside but is fragile and unable to stand against the difficulties of life and the ups and downs of everyday life. Jesus describes it as building a house upon a rock vs. sand. The obvious point is that a life built upon sand will sway and crumble, while a life build upon a rock will withstand the storms. So, which describes your foundation? The question of “Which Way” will be best influenced by the foundation to which one has built.
The foundation of one’s life is affected by what’s been poured into it. It goes back to a saying that I’ve used over the years, “What we live with we learn, what we learn we practice, and what we practice we become”. What we’ve seen, heard and experienced will have a direct bearing upon which way we go in life. It will only change when I purposefully choose to make those changes. Think about it.
