Crows Dominate Last Day at Rolfe Beagle Club’s Statewide Coyote and Crow Hunt
Johnsonburg, Pa.: Jim Miller of St Marys brought in the lone coyote on the last day of Rolfe Beagle Club’s Statewide, 10-Day, Coyote and Crow Hunt. And it was a well-deserved coyote. This was Jim’s first time entering the Rolfe Hunt and his first coyote harvested during the hunt timeframe. “I started hunting predators just recently and I shot a coyote a couple of weeks ago, so I was excited to see if I could harvest another one during the hunt timeframe.
I missed a coyote just last weekend during the hunt, and I kept trying to get one for this hunt,” said Jim. The male coyote weighed in at 23.6 pounds. Jim shoots a .243 rifle with a thermal scope. He also uses a Fox Pro electronic call. Jim harvested his coyote about 10:00 pm on Friday evening just before the rain really started to pour. “I stayed out until 2:00 a.m. anyhow,” said Jim, “trying to get a second coyote.”
Steve Krug and Brad Snyder, two big time crow hunters, finished off the last day by bringing in a total of 21 crows between the two of them. Steve shot 17 crows over Thursday (8), Friday (8), and one on Saturday. “I had to go buy two more boxes of shells – one on Thursday and one on Friday,” laughed Steve. Steve was hunting both public and private lands in Elk County. He shoots a 12-gauge shotgun and uses 7 and ½ shot. A couple of crow calls he likes are “crows gathering” or “young crows”.
Brad Snyder and his co-hort Aiden brought in 4 crows all harvested on public lands in both Jefferson and Forest Counties. Three of the crows came off State Game Lands 31 and the fourth one came from near Buzzard Swamp on the Allegheny NF. Brad also shoots a 12-gauge shotgun with 7 and ½ shot.
Predator hunters are reminded that Rolfe will offer its 9th Annual Statewide Coyote and Fox Hunt or Trap event over two weekends in February.
