PennDOT Potter County Maintenance Work Schedule for the Week of July 15
Clearfield, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced the following schedule of maintenance activities in Potter County the week of July 15. PennDOT performs year-round maintenance in its mission to provide a safe, efficient transportation system, and the scope of work in Potter County for the coming week is as follows:
Base Repair:
- Route 1001 (Brookland Road) from the intersection of Route 6 to the intersection of Ellis Hollow Road in Sweden Township. Monday, July 15, through Friday, July 19. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours. Motorists will follow a pilot vehicle through the work zone and are asked to expect delays.
- Route 1002 (North Hollow Road) from the intersection of Hollow Road to the intersection of Brookland Road in Sweden Township. Monday, July 15, through Friday, July 19. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours. Motorists will follow a pilot vehicle through the work zone and are asked to expect delays.
Base repair is intended to repair fatigue cracked, potholed or distorted pavement sections and restore the structural integrity of the pavement. All distressed material within the area, including the material beneath the asphalt, is removed and replaced with sound material. The new material is then compacted before being overlayed with new asphalt. Base repair extends the service life of good and fair roads and provides a smooth, safe ride for motorists.
Bridge Maintenance & Cleaning
- Route 3001 (East Fork Road) in Summit Township. Sunday, July 14, through Friday, July 19. PennDOT will implement a detour using detour using Route 44 (Coudersport Pike), Route 6 (Grand Army of the Republic Highway), and Route 872 (Inez Road).
Pennsylvania has some of the oldest bridges in the country, with an age of more than 50 years on average. Preventive maintenance is vital in extending the life of the structures. As such, PennDOT maintenance crews perform some bridge deck patching and structural repairs.
Manual Patching
- Route 44 from a bridge spanning Steer Run in Hebron Township, through Shinglehouse, to the McKean County line. Monday, July 15, through Friday, July 19. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
- Route 244 (Oswayo Road) from the intersection of Route 44 in Hebron Township to the New York state line in Genesee Township. Monday, July 15, through Friday, July 19. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
- Route 4015 (Bells Run Road) from the Sharon Township line to the McKean County line. Monday, July 15, through Friday, July 19. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
Most permanent pothole patching is completed in the spring/summer when temperatures stay consistently above freezing. If maintenance crews were not repairing potholes, the road surface would break up further and require more expensive corrective measures.
Pipe Replacing & Cleaning, Ditching
- Route 144 from the Clinton County line in Wharton Township to the intersection of Route 44 in Stewardson Township. Tuesday, July 16, through Friday, July 19. Flaggers in the roadway will provide traffic control during daylight hours.
Pipe replacement and cleaning are essential in maintaining water flow around state roadways. Controlling water flow is one of the most important aspects of maintaining pavements. Uncontrolled water flow will damage both the pavement surface and the area under the pavement, which causes deterioration across the length of the pipe.

Mowing, herbicide spraying, and selected tree thinning help maintain a safe roadway free of obstructing vegetation, improving visibility to spot signage, traffic control devices, and other motorists, bicyclists, pedestrians, and animals approaching the road. Additionally, a well-maintained roadside can improve drainage and prolong the life of the roadway.
